I've been training here since August 4, 2025, that's the first day they opened. I have trained at…read morefive or six different jiu-jitsu schools in Austin prior to this school. I have been in the martial arts for 25 years and was an amateur fighter for the Marine Corps MMA team in 2008 for context. I'm now a 41 year-old, fat old blue belt, I'm retired. This is just a hobby for me. I train the 6 AM classes with Professor Luke Griffith primarily. The owner, Professor Gordon Ryan is there several days a week for the early classes as well. Professor John Danaher currently teaches the 7am Advanced Gi class. The No Gi Pro Classes start at 9am and they have no Gi classes all day from there. I do my best to attend the 930am on Saturday and Sunday when I have the energy, that is taught by Professor Helena Crevar, or by Professor John Danaher when she is out of town competing or doing seminars. The facilities are perfect. I have zero complaints there. The showers are amazing. The mat space is perfect and there is a spring board underneath the mats for more cushion and absorbing falls and throws. The coaching staff is world class. Everyone is the best in their division in the world. Which is crazy and unheard of. But most importantly, they are patient and kind throughout their teaching. I have trained with professional fighters before in the past at other gyms, just because someone is a pro doesn't mean they are good at coaching or that they have the patience to teach. I'm very appreciative for the amount of patience these instructors have for myself and my training partners. I would be here even if my coaches weren't world champions. Their patience and professionalism is what keeps me coming to class every day. I'm a big guy, so it's hard to find a uniform that fits me comfortably but for some reason the company they are working with (Breakpoint) has been a perfect fit for my body type. I'm very fortunate for that as well. The gi they sell is a pearl weave so it won't shrink from washing or become too stretched during training. It's a good quality gi. I'm very impressed with it. The cost for training here currently is very competitive compared to the other schools in the same location and area of Austin. Almost all the schools in Austin are moving to the $250-$400 range. There is a school right down the street that is charging $400 a month. So this school is actually more affordable than local alternatives at the moment. I really appreciate the schedule that is available to me as a student. I love that I can train seven days a week. I really feel like I'm getting my money's worth here. I can't think of any cons or disappointments in training here. Every day is a blessing and I'm very fortunate to have this opportunity.

It's got a nice vibe, there's always random people from out of state or out of country who came to Austin just to train here. A lot of local school head instructors train here too It's very high level, but there's a ton of white belts too Facility is very nice, especially the bats and bathrooms If there are cons it would be the price, but then again it's a lot cheaper than attending a seminar from one of the coaches I also don't love how gi based it is, would've expected a lot more no gi classes . But if John and gordan say I need to train in the gi, who am I to argue

I travel and train a ton, and this is a gym I can't wait to get back to. Todd and Marcus's instruction was methodical and detailed, and really built upon itself. The students were friendly, trained hard, and made me feel right at home. The mats were clean and the facilities TOP NOTCH. They have showers, water, and a nice coffee maker. There's great art and great music. This gym is really exceptional and an awesome place to get your roll on. There were all ranks and everyone seemed really engaged. If you live in Austin, or are close, make the drive, and get some training in here. It's well well well worth it. Plus, you never know who you'll run into in class.

My…read moreexperience with Master Martial Arts and Master Sam Um has been nothing short of incredible. I originally started practicing Taekwondo here when I was much younger, early through late middle school. I was always engaged in every aspect of the class: Master Um makes an unbelievable effort to ensure every student of his is properly trained and gets individual attention throughout the class time to heighten their skills. When I reached highschool, I stopped after achieving a red belt due to my schedule not fitting, but had always wanted to go back and continue training because the classes were so fun and useful. Now, at age 21 and a full time student in college, I have returned to train in TaekwonYusul. From my understanding, "Taekwon" means "striking" and "Yusul" means grappling. Master Um has created a new hybrid of the traditional martial arts (Taekwondo, Gonkwon Yusul, Brazillian Ju Jitsu, Judo) labeled TaekwonYusul to emphasize it's heightened practicality over other single-focus arts. This is hands-down one of the most effective and useful martial arts I've discovered through my years of experience, and incorporates techniques from other martial arts that just WORK. I would say that TaekwonYusul is more of a taditional style mixed martial art, which gives it an advantage over most other options. The classes are structured, we spar with padding and safety equipment every class, and you will 100% be accomadated to whatever skill level you start at. With my Taekwondo background helping in the striking areas, I was surprised by how quickly I was finding myself retaining grappling techniques. All of the other students are wonderful and very helpful, often offering to teach you more in depth technique if you seem to be having a hard time grasping any concepts. I was very surprised to learn that TaekwonYusul hasn't been proffessionally recognized as a new martial art, but I have no doubt that in a few years this will be practiced by gyms accross the world. As for Master Um, he is one of the best teachers and coaches I've had throughout my life, always attentive and eager to teach and ready to demonstrate a technique the moment you have a question. His credibility is unbelieveable, having over 40 years of experience with martial arts and winning many competitions for Taekwondo in his youth. He's trained over 5,000 students, and that figure is from when I was a kid. I just want to say that if you read this whole thing, please consider joining. It might be the most exciting and engaging thing you get to look forward to going to after school or work. Thank you Master Um, I look forward to continuing my training. Thanks for reading, Yelp!

This studio and system has some unique advantages over others. As part of a national association led by Martial Arts Hall of Fame member Ernie Reyes Sr., the curriculum is very practical, constantly evolving and improving, and quality of both technique and teaching is closely managed. This is true all the way from the Little Dragon (5-8 year old program) through to the Mastery (4th and higher degree black belt.) While color belt tests are held at the studio in Austin, Black Belt tests are in California with all the other schools creating an event and life changing experience for testers. Imagine testing with 300 other candidates and the spectacle involved. Members of the studio feel like a family. It is a supportive, engaged and caring group. Instructors are focused on teaching correctly but understand that each student is different and adapt approaches to stretch and grow the individual. Classes are a good, whole body workout - and due to the breadth of the curriculum, it's never the same and certainly not boring. Citizenship and life skills are also part of the requirements. This studio produces well rounded, confident students with practical self defense skills.

Since doing so, we have seen a huge difference with our kid. He's already a great kid. But to have people other than the parents reinforce great values such as manners, integrity, discipline, moral values, etc. is an amazing thing, particularly in today's society. Kids become parent deaf, as we all know. And, obviously, he is learning to protect himself and gets exercise at the same time. Lastly, it's a community. You meet new people, great people and there are always things happening with the school that you can all participate in. Love this school. Can't wait to start myself.
