My favorite classes have been the 6 ( a six week area focused strength class), heavy bag (cardio class with lots of kickboxing moves), and barbell (weight lifting). I had never touched a kettlebell, heavy bag, or barbell before and its shocking how much you pick up. The confidence boost from trying it to the first time to seeing your progress after a couple of weeks is crazy. The variety of classes was great but what really kept me coming back is the amazing community that Amelia and Amie have created. The gym is so welcoming to people of all fitness and knowledge levels and there is never any pressure to give more than you can. You truly feel welcomed here.

I learned a great deal, developed meaningful friendships, and previously had a positive relationship with the coaches. As a veteran, Jiu-Jitsu had become more than a recreational activity for me. It provided structure, community, purpose, and a constructive way to manage the transition out of military service. This context made the end of my membership particularly significant for me. Management developed concerns about my communication style, but I was not spoken to directly or informed that my membership was at risk. I later learned that the coach's wife had been discussing her concerns about me with one of my close friends for approximately one month. My friend repeatedly stated that she believed I was joking rather than intending disrespect and offered to speak with me about it. She was told that the coaches would handle the matter. No coach raised these concerns with me directly. And because my personality had never changed and had previously been accepted and interpreted positively, I had no reason to believe it was suddenly unacceptable and that a narrative was being built. When I later became aware that a joke in the team group chat had been interpreted as disrespectful, I sent my coach a private apology and explained that disrespect had not been my intention. I did not receive a response. This shows that once aware of issues, I was willing to adjust, apologize and communicate. It also shows that my coach and his wife are incapable of direct communication. Shortly thereafter, my membership was terminated by phone. The decision was communicated by my coach's wife. I did not receive a direct explanation from the coach who had worked with me most closely, mentored me, and had been preparing me to compete. During the call, I requested a conversation to better understand the concerns, provide my perspective, and assess whether the situation could have been addressed differently. I was informed that the decision was final and not open for discussion. I was not given a warning, a clear opportunity to correct the behavior, or a detailed explanation prior to the termination of my membership and my involvement with the team. I felt betrayed and discarded by someone I looked up to, admired and wanted to make proud. To have someone you trust not deem you worthy of even a single conversation felt like the cruelest abuse of trust. The last thing said to me during that conversation was "I hope your next gym gets your sense of humor", which was just an unnecessary insult and clearly a veiled insult driven by a personal vendetta that I was not privy to. I understand that a privately owned academy has the authority to determine membership. My concern relates to how that authority was exercised. Concerns were discussed with someone close to me over a period of weeks while I was not informed. An opportunity for direct communication was not taken, my apology was not acknowledged, and the matter was concluded without a direct conversation with the coach who had mentored me. I remain appreciative of the training and relationships I developed while I was there. However, I would not recommend this academy to students--particularly veterans or others who rely on Jiu-Jitsu for structure and community--if they prioritize transparent communication, clear expectations, and an opportunity to address concerns before membership termination. Update following the response: I understand the decision not to discuss these supposedly existent "private details" in a public forum. However, the central concern in my review is that they also declined to discuss those concerns with me privately. I was not warned that there was an alleged "pattern of conduct", my apology was not acknowledged, and my request for a direct conversation with my coach was denied. Their response does not address that communication process, which remains the basis of my review. Do better, Steven.

He fails to render services of training he takes full payment for by offering a discount as a means of ensuring that he is paid. If you need private classes, pay him per lesson rather than upfront or you will be in regret and have to take him to court to collect your refund.

The real deal. This is not a HIIT gym. This is not an indoor…read morecycling studio, or fitness class in a dark room with neon lights. This is a boxing club; but don't get me wrong, it is fun as heck! I struggle keeping up with gym routines or high intensity classes because you're only ever doing it for the feeling afterwards, or for how they promise you'll look, if only you came back 3+ times a week. Do you know what that's called? You're using those classes as a means to an end. But not here. Not boxing. For me, at least, the very activity of boxing is an ends in itself (that just so happens to give me the fitness and body I've been after all along). It's hard, with tricky combos and footwork, coupled with exhausting, 2-minute stretches of nailing a bag with uppercuts. It keeps my mind buzzing, trying my best to keep it sharp and get the combos right (or helping my partner with their's), and forces me to reach deeeep into my reserves to hit, weave, and power through those moments when you just want to say "I can't". The gym is a no-nonsense, warehouse style venue, with plenty of bags and floorspace for the size of the classes, and a pretty decent split of men to women (though I think there's also a dedicated Thursday class for women?) Any notion of it being intimidating go away completely the moment you introduce yourself to the person next to you. This gym keeps true to what it set out to do, and I think for that reason it attracts that kind of person; no pretenders or showboaters or other such characters. There are some pro looking people, and some very green looking people (like me), and some in-between. People come here because they enjoy the thing they're doing. They're not here to just enjoy the after-effects. Classes are Mon, Wed, Fri, and I hope I can continue to make them all! (And when I don't, boy do I miss it!)

There are a lot of martial artists and a lot of martial arts schools in Austin and specifically in Northwest Austin. But among all that I have ever encountered, Gene is unique. He's a straight shooter, telling you exactly what he thinks. He's kind, patient and amazingly perceptive, but he's also not afraid to push you (and himself) to reach our full potential. He holds several black belts in different styles of karate but also has extensive experience in Jujitsu, aikido, Tai Chi and Qigong, just to name a few. But where the magic really happens is with the Systema component of his martial arts school. Systema is a Russian Martial Art and compared to most is very free-form, very free and incorporates very healthy movement and breath work while focusing on maximum efficiency while using the least amount of tension possible. Many martial arts are destructive to the body over time whereas I'm convinced Systema is improving my body as I age (I'm 53). I've worked with a number of martial arts teachers over the years and I've never encountered anyone quite like Gene; he's truly one of a kind. If you are looking for classes for yourself of your child (he takes kids as young as 8) and you are looking for martial arts classes in Northwest Austin, I would look no further than Austin Systema.

This school is the perfect combination of incredible martial arts and a wise and talented teacher. Systema is unlike any art I've studied. There are basically almost no actual techniques. Instead, we focus on breath, relaxation, posture and spontaneous movement. We learn to respond naturally to whatever threat is present but, more importantly, how to respond naturally in our lives. Systema is more than a martial art, it's a way of of life. Taiji (or "tai chi") is a beautiful and graceful art that creates incredible peace in the body and mind. It's a perfect compliment to systema. Also available is Brazilian jiu-jitsu for those interested in the grappling arts. Again, a great compliment to systema training. Oh... And on Wednesday evenings there's even a breathing, stretching and massage class! All classes are included for everyone. Come to as many or as few as you like. Lastly, Gene Smithson, the instructor for all classes, is the reason that all of this works so well. He is a deeply dedicated teacher for both adults and children. His patience with each student at whatever level they're at allows us to advance quickly as a group. Everyone that comes consistently has improved greatly in the time I've been training. I've been to a lot of martial arts schools over the past 40 years and this school has my highest recommendation.
