I called before the freeze was over in order to cancel and they said I had to re-activate and pay 30 days again in order to cancel. This was not explained when I originally wanted to cancel and froze instead. There were other things like this even when we first signed up that should have been a warning. They were and are dishonest in their business practices, rushing you through signing up without reading the contract (it's on me for not stopping them, but also they should be entering a contract in good faith which they did not). The coaches were great with our kids, even though the classes were over filled. They are good instructors who are kind. But the people who run the desk and finances are not trustworthy. Find another school if you can.

On top of that, the Open Mats on Saturday are free to all. An interesting quirk here is that the classes aren't divided into Gi/No-Gi classes. Miguel's approach is that everyone should be proficient in both so there's a weekly rotation between Gi and No-Gi which goes towards being well-rounded. I usually stick with Gi classes but by coming here I couldn't 'hide out' in my pajamas. What's more I know for a fact that Professor Miguel has always been willing to help out his students life situation he'll find a way to keep his students training.

After the cancellation, we were still charged an additional fee. We contacted the gym right away to request a refund, but we were told we missed the reimbursement/refund window, so a refund would not be provided. I understand businesses have policies, but this felt frustrating and unfair given that we had already withdrawn him. I'm leaving this review so other families clearly understand the billing and refund timelines before signing up. I'd appreciate the gym revisiting this situation and making it right.

I have been in the martial arts for 25 years and was an amateur fighter for the Marine Corps MMA team in 2008 for context. I'm now a 41 year-old, fat old blue belt, I'm retired. This is just a hobby for me. I train the 6 AM classes with Professor Luke Griffith primarily. The owner, Professor Gordon Ryan is there several days a week for the early classes as well. Professor John Danaher currently teaches the 7am Advanced Gi class. The No Gi Pro Classes start at 9am and they have no Gi classes all day from there. I do my best to attend the 930am on Saturday and Sunday when I have the energy, that is taught by Professor Helena Crevar, or by Professor John Danaher when she is out of town competing or doing seminars. The facilities are perfect. I have zero complaints there. The showers are amazing. The mat space is perfect and there is a spring board underneath the mats for more cushion and absorbing falls and throws. The coaching staff is world class. Everyone is the best in their division in the world. Which is crazy and unheard of. But most importantly, they are patient and kind throughout their teaching. I have trained with professional fighters before in the past at other gyms, just because someone is a pro doesn't mean they are good at coaching or that they have the patience to teach. I'm very appreciative for the amount of patience these instructors have for myself and my training partners. I would be here even if my coaches weren't world champions. Their patience and professionalism is what keeps me coming to class every day. I'm a big guy, so it's hard to find a uniform that fits me comfortably but for some reason the company they are working with (Breakpoint) has been a perfect fit for my body type. I'm very fortunate for that as well. The gi they sell is a pearl weave so it won't shrink from washing or become too stretched during training. It's a good quality gi. I'm very impressed with it. The cost for training here currently is very competitive compared to the other schools in the same location and area of Austin. Almost all the schools in Austin are moving to the $250-$400 range. There is a school right down the street that is charging $400 a month. So this school is actually more affordable than local alternatives at the moment. I really appreciate the schedule that is available to me as a student. I love that I can train seven days a week. I really feel like I'm getting my money's worth here. I can't think of any cons or disappointments in training here. Every day is a blessing and I'm very fortunate to have this opportunity.

My husband has been attending for almost 3 years now and our daughter became interested after watching some of his classes. Next month will be a year since our daughter started and Professor Andre, Coach Eric, Coach Brayden, and Coach Stormy have been a huge influence on her and we credit them with helping her gain incredible confidence. BJJ has helped her grow so much on and off the mat in just one year. Professor Andre and the staff have such a way with the kids. Teaching them valuable qualities such as respect, hard work, discipline and leadership all while learning valuable self defense skills and the kids have fun every class! For parents of girls give it a chance! Our "girly girl" looks forward to every class and loves to show off her new skills to us. She even came to us and said her goal is to compete this year. Unsafe training, bad mats, and poor environment I walked in fine and left injured…read more I decided to try out this gym because it's close to my house. From the moment I first walked in to ask about a free trial, the atmosphere felt uncomfortable everyone looked at me like I was some kind of intruder instead of a potential new student. No one greeted me or tried to make me feel welcome. That should've been the first red flag. During training, things went from awkward to dangerous. Someone decided to pull on my heel extremely hard not even applying a proper inside heel hook or any legitimate control and I felt a pop in my knee. I immediately knew something was wrong. That one careless move left me with internal damage in my left knee. I can barely move it now and can't afford the medical costs to fix it. It's been painful physically and mentally because I came here just to learn and have a good experience. On top of that, the mats were terrible. They had almost no grip super slippery even when dry. It's the kind of surface where you can slide around during drilling or sparring, which makes it way easier to get hurt. A gym that takes safety seriously would invest in proper mats like Fuji or Zebra mats, not the cheap ones that feel like plastic flooring. I'm not posting this out of anger I just want to give people an honest warning. The environment here doesn't feel controlled, and safety clearly isn't a priority. If you're looking for a competitive but respectful place to train, I strongly suggest going somewhere else. I train at Kingsway, and it's a night and day difference still very intense and competitive, but everything is structured, the mats are safe, and people actually look out for each other. That's how a real gym should operate.
