Each of our 3 boys have taken lessons here - guitar, drums, and keyboard. I highly recommend them!

Dr. Cheung is incredibly patient, enthusiastic and clearly passionate about teaching. He takes the time to meet my son where he is which has made a big difference in both his confidence and consistency. My son has made leaps and bounds since starting lessons with him and it's been really rewarding to watch that progress. My son has had a few injuries from BJJ and wrestling and Dr. Cheung worked with him to adapt lessons so he could continue practicing using one hand. That level of support and problem solving meant a lot. One thing I especially appreciate about MACSA is how many opportunities they offer beyond weekly lessons. There are regular performance opportunities and competitions, which give students a chance to grow, build confidence and apply what they're learning in a meaningful way. The pianos the students get to practice on are also beautiful which adds to the overall experience and makes it feel even more special. It feels like a place that truly supports both skill development and a genuine love for music. I'm really glad we found it.

Music on Magnolia is a great music school to teach children and adults new instruments!…read more My kid is just over two years old and he attended Music on Magnolia for their toddler classes in which they play with rhythms and sounds. This class was just 30 minutes every Saturday morning and my kiddo absolutely loved it. The teacher was super patient with the little ones, and made it a very fun experience for everyone. Unfortunately the class was removed off the program and he will no longer be able to attend. However, I look forward to coming back to Music on Magnolias once he is older and he can attend their Music Exploration classes.

Before signing up, I asked if the instructor would be able to handle a high-energy toddler and were reassured that it wouldn't be an issue. Unfortunately, that didn't seem to be the case. While I understand the importance of structure and rules, the approach taken didn't feel supportive or age-appropriate. There were moments where he seemed to be singled out or excluded--for example, when other children were given instruments and he was not. He was also removed from class, which for a 30-minute session means he missed the entire experience, without other options offered (like having a parent assist). I completely understand that not every class is the right fit for every child, but at this age, patience and redirection go a long way. It was disappointing because he genuinely enjoyed being there. I hope the program can consider a more supportive approach for younger children who are still learning how to navigate structured environments.

Students ages 6-9yrs start on the Primer main book along with the Primer Theory book. The focus of the main books and the theory books overlap, which makes for a well-rounded, integral approach. In the theory books, the students learn basics of medodic and harmonic intervals. Also, we have the Primer Performance book which gives the student actual songs to learn and practice. Beginners also use the Schaum Notespeller, which teaches all the basics of reading music. The beginner also learns all about rhythm and and different time signatures. If a student is age 10 or older and has had some primary music taught in school, we begin with the Bastien Level 1 books, usually in concert with the Primer Theory book and Notespeller 1.
