A road trip today to explore thrift shops and coffee shops in Cleveland and Dayton, north of Houston, led me to wonder where I would be stopping for lunch as there are many options up this way. I made the right decision, returning here as the onion rings were as good as I remembered and exactly the way that I like my onion rings. And the chicken fried steak with the cream gravy was mighty fine. Recommended. Service was excellent. Friendly. Water refills. All boxes checked. Having just come across a book of counter service restaurants in the state of Texas called Counter Culture, I was really pleased to see that they had kept the original counter, stools and counter set up here. read more

Food was pretty good, but I think we were overcharged. We paid $53 for 3 meals today, and no drinks. Something just seemed off, and of course my husband didn't want to say anything so instead he told me when we got to the car how much it was and that we're not coming back We had a 2 step breakfast or something like that, 2 eggs, 2 sausage, 2 pancakes - I added cheese to my son's eggs. 1 sausage and cheese omelet, with gravy on the biscuit. 1 Philly cheesesteak omelet with gravy on the biscuit, add 1 pancake. We eat here several times a month. With the Barber Shop next door, my husband gets a hair cut and then we go eat breakfast. TKK serves great food! My favorite is biscuits and gravy with a side of Tater Tots. Or for lunch, I will have the small cheese burger and tots. MY hubby always gets the small (LOL) chicken fried steak! I live in Spring but work here in Dayton. Honestly, it's wonderful to see that authentic food and most importantly, Authentic People are the order of the day at this place. So many places dump so much money on decor when not many people care if the place looks old and possibly historical. The waitstaff brings me back to when places were really like this. "Honey" and "Sugar" were just really nice things to say when a waitress addressed a customer. I just like the feel of the place and wish there were more like it these days. Breakfast on the weekends, is usually a full diner and may have to wait just a bit. Hours are a little odd, only open for breakfast and lunch I think. This is one of those Mom and Pop type places where you just know the food's going to be good as soon as you walk in. One of the waitstaff told us to sit where we wanted and she would be right there. We must of looked like a couple of city-slickers, because she told us, "This isn't fast food. We make everything to order so it make take a little bit." I told her we were in no hurry. We waited longer than a regular chain restaurant, but it was well worth it. My two dining patrons ordered a large chicken fried steak each. Large was an under-statement. It should have read "Humongous chicken fried steak" since a large order just meant two chicken fried steaks. The oval plate they were served on was probably a foot wide, and they easily filled it. It came with a trip to the salad bar and mashed potatoes - all for $9.95. A bargain if I ever saw one. I had the grilled chicken breast, which was tiny in comparison, but delicious nonetheless. Tho restaurant serves delicious homemade food, served in giant portions at reasonable prices. Chicken Fried Chicken and Chicken Fried Steak are served on a large oval plate with a generous amount of mashed potatoes and toast. They also include a trip to the salad bar. Before Hurricane Ike, Kountry Kitchen was the place to be! We loved going there for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Their waitresses were always kind and good local folks. We were never disappointed. After Hurricane Ike, the kitchen was destroyed and lost nearly everything. We waited months for it to reopen. Excited the first week back in operation, we went to have a bite to eat for breakfast. They had remodeled everything and opened the space up a lot. We sat ourselves as before but the wait was very long and almost unbearable with our children crying from hunger. We went back for dinner some weeks later and we waited for about 5 or 6 minutes when the waitress asked us what we'd like to drink. She took our drink order and since we already knew what we wanted to eat, we asked for her to take our food order as well. She disappeared to the back and never brought us our drinks. We waited for a good 15 minutes after that. We watched several more families come and go. Two others walked out before we decided to leave too. I'm not sure if their staffing has been short since Ike, but we decided as a family to not go back. Two bad experiences in a row was just a turn off. Once you get your food, it's amazing. That's not a doubt. Their orders are much larger than chains and the price is reasonable. If you've got small children, you'll only need to order one plate and split it between two! read more

First of all, when you walk through the door you are slammed by cigarette smoke. They have two sections that appear pretty separate, but that doesn't help. The traffic between the sides keeps the non-smoking side smoky as a bar. It doesn't help that the cash register is over there so you have no choice but to walk over there and pay. Asthma sufferers either stay away or bring a friend that pays! I've had breakfast and lunch here. The breakfast was good but bland. No salt or anything on any of the other food but the waffle was alright. The Chicken Fried Steak was passable but CFS enthusiasts won't find it compelling. Service was ok. I've been there and waited 20 minutes to get a refill but only once. I've kind of stopped going since I just wasn't that impressed. read more

Living in this town my whole life I've eaten here a good amount of times. I don't really like it. Honestly I avoid the place. Nothing matches. It feels run down. And you end up with three different people taking care of you. It's cramped and the food is okay. Their breakfast for staters.. the eggs are good but if I order it with cheese I expect for it to be mealted. The bacon is good, nice and crisp. Though the gravy taste awful. Texas Country Kitchen is one of the local morning hangouts. Very good country style breakfast (I wished you got to biscuits with breakfast instead of one) the kitchen serves a daily steam table. Stopped in for breakfast with my son, for the first time. LOVE this place. Excellent service and Awesome food. I had bacon, eggs and hash browns and he had an omelette with hash browns. This place is a great local spot. They love their locals coming in for a meal. If you move to the area and attempt to eat here, good luck. Since they don't know your face, they think you aren't local and simply ignore you so you will leave. Been here twice in the last month and that was the experience. Business owners have that right. Another thing I respect is they encourage smoking, with ash trays on most tables. Smokers can light up before, during and after a meal to enhance their dinning experience. This is a great thing. Even though I'm not a smoker, I do not support the government telling business owners customers can't smoke in their place of business. That decision belongs with the owner. Only the owner should make that decision and benefit or suffer financially from it. Since after two attempts to have breakfast here with no luck at getting it, I will move on to another local spot. read more
