I turned to them and said, "Guys, this is my new hobby," to which they responded, "Yeah, right, John, sure." Well, I showed them. That weekend, upon returning home to Houston, I noticed a friend had invited me to a circus show she was in at Discovery Green. I didn't really know what I was looking at at the time, but it was cool enough that I asked her how I could join. A year later, I'm totally hooked. I take classes at three different studios these days. I like each of them for different reasons, but Cirque La Vie is my favorite. For one thing, CLV is -- to my knowledge -- the only circus troupe in Houston which also offers classes (or, on the flip-side, the only place offering classes which is also a circus troupe). As a result, it feels the most like a family. CLV's also got the most range of skills. While other studios in Houston only deal with aerial arts, CLV has jugglers, acrobats, stilt-walkers, contortionists, flow artists, and so on. There's even an apparatus for practicing tightrope, and talk of getting a trampoline. The biggest downside to CLV is probably the current lack of options for higher-level aerialists to take classes -- most likely a consequence of the limited space with which they struggled until their recent move. At the time of this writing, CLV only has level-one classes for aerials; but its teachers do offer private lessons, and they're worth it.

This review is for their performance in Houston…read more If you've been to other Cirque Du Soleil in the race park before then you know that there's no way around paying for parking. It will cost you $12 to park. The good thing about the parking is it was super organized so even though there were long lines of cars trying to park, the lines were moving; and once I had paid, the attendees directed me where to go and it took me less than a minute to park. Before you can enter the Grand Chapiteau, you have to go through your typical security measure. There are no metal detectors but they will look inside your purse if you have one. I was here with my sister and she didn't have a purse so we didn't even get checked. She did have a jacket on her but they didn't check it. This means you could sneak in your own snacks/drinks should you be inclined to. Why would one be inclined to sneak in their own snacks/drinks? Well, a bottled water/soda will run you $5. Nachos will run you $10. A Cotton candy will run you $8. Hot dog will run you $7. You see where I'm going with this? If you're coming here with your family (kids, wife, girlfriend, whatever), then you be better be ready to be dropping some $$$$. As for the show, it's your typical CDS stage/seating. You have the round stage with the seats surrounding them. I was lucky enough to get good seats to the right side and three rows from the stage so I was able to see everything clearly. If you opt to sit toward the back, some times you can't even see the faces of the performers clearly. The show started at eight on the dot. Some of the performances are pretty typical CDS where it would amaze you what a human body can do with training (contortionist, balancing act, juggling). Some of the other acts were more creative (invisible circus, finger dancing, animal impression). One act in particular was a combination of both where you have this dude playing yo-yo in the middle of the stage, but holy cow, he could control them yo-yos like they were a part of his body. I felt like he should have been competing in international yo-yo championship or something. All in all, I was happy with the show. This was also my sister's first Cirque Du Soleil and so everything was brand new to her and she was thoroughly impressed with the performances. CDS is always a fun event to go to and I definitely will go to whatever other Cirque Du Soleil shows that would make a stop in Houston.

Houston parking was $12; I parked the furthest away and still it wasn't far from the tent. I was concerned that the AC might not be working from a heads up review 4 days earlier...but, thankfully the AC was on and blowing good!! Toilets looked like porta pottys but they actually had lights and hooks to hang your purse---speaking of...I walked in the stall and there hung a yellow bag and a Kurios souvenir! I was like...HOW can one forget ALL that? Turned it in to an employee...hope the lady got her stuff back. The seats are small and very close together...I chose an end seat so I'd only have one person beside me. My seats were stage right 8 rows back...awesome! Show was exciting...as usual, I was amazed. Do yourself a favor and attend a Cirque de Soleil soon...it's well worth the $$$

I attended my first class in October 2022 which was a silks conditioning class taught by Chelsea Lu. Although I didn't learn much silk technique, the conditioning class was a great workout! I've also attended a few lyra and trapeze classes taught by Nikki and Caiya, respectively. In addition, I have attended an open studio session to try out flying pole. I would say that trapeze has been my favorite apparatus so far! Overall, I really like the community here, and the aerialists are much friendlier and welcoming than previous studios I've been to. I also really appreciate the owner, Caiya. She has always made her studio a safe space for my husband and I to learn new skills and have fun without any judgement! Another thing I really like about this studio is that they even offer children's circus classes, so there is something for everyone at any age or gender. The location is a bit hard to find at first, but there are directions on the website. Since the studio is only 5 minutes away from us, we tend to frequent this studio. I am looking forward to putting my future children in circus classes as well!

Caiya has trained in classical ballet since the age of 3 and began her circus training at the age of 16 with an emphasis on contortion. She started Cai Circus to help build the circus and performance community in Houston, TX. It's located inside "Future Stars of Houston," a creative space for children to learn music, dance, instruments, circus arts, and other artistic skillsets. Cai Circus collaborates with Future Stars of Houston for their circus arts portion for children. However, Cai Circus also offers adult classes in a variety of circus arts such as aerial silks, trapeze, hammock, lyra, rope, contortion, straps, and more. Getting to this location can be a bit difficult as it's somewhat hidden. You can find it on Google Maps, but it requires driving through a giant lot beside random warehouses and going under two overpasses (Shepherd Drive and Durham Drive). There is a private parking lot with plenty of spaces, so you will always have a free place to park. I started training at Cai Circus in August 2022 solely to improve my flexibility and mobility. I have a background in yoga and calisthenics, and I was wanting to push my body to further levels. After observing the weird aerial apparatuses hanging from the ceiling, I was curious and drawn to explore them all. Here is a list of my favorite classes that Cai Circus currently offers below: Aerial Silks - Chelsea / Taylar / Toni / Angela / Eddie Lyra - Nicole Trapeze - Caiya Straps - Emma / Mauricio Rope - Emma Mobility & Flexibility - Caiya Open Studio - Various Instructors *They also offer random workshops Overall, Cai Circus is an amazing training facility to learn circus arts. Although I only came to stretch, I ended up learning so much more about fitness than I could have ever imagined. I have no desire to perform, but I am very happy that I came across this training facility. Each instructors has different skillsets, and you can learn from them all. I would highly recommend checking out Cai Circus!

Today my daughter (who is 7) called me having a panic attack after leaving aerial arts early. I work during the week so her grandmother brings her. While in class today, the kids were running to get on slings and my daughter got to a sling before another little girl, who then started crying. The red headed teacher (I can never remember her name), yelled at the little girl to not cry and go sit with her grandmother if she was going to keep crying. Awful, that should've never happened, but then my daughter went to go console the girl because she has a huge heart and she's been raised to care about others. At this point the teacher BELLOWS at my daughter "(name) YOU AREN'T HELPING, GO BACK TO YOUR SPOT". My daughter has pretty severe ADHD (which aerial arts was helping with) and anxiety from issues that happened with a very mean teacher in kindergarten. When she was yelled at, my daughter went and hid behind the sling and started tearing up. My mom then asked if she wanted to go home and she said yes. After she put her in the car with her great grandmother my mom went back in to speak to the teacher. My mom walked onto the floor and said "maam" to get her attention. She continued with "you do not have the right to speak to any child like that. The worst thing you can do as a teacher is yell at a child. That was uncalled for." Do which the teacher replied "yeah, well she's ALOT" (speaking about my daughter, who we have spoken a lot to this particular teacher about her ADHD issues and my daughter had been doing so much better staying on task and really trying to learn) and my mom said "she's a lot? Well so what that. Completely out of line" and left. After my daughter called me while I was working, HYPERVENTILATING, and crying trying to tell me what happened. I am taking my daughter out of axis. I am SO happy I found an aerial arts school closer to where we live that is beginning children's classes. I was going to leave her in axis until those classes started but I refuse to subject my child to a teacher who shouldn't even be around children. It's very apparent she has no control over her temper and she has an ego the size of a yacht. I had seen glimpses of this lack of emotional control from her in the past when I was bringing her, but it wasn't to this extent so I just assumed she was having a rough day. But to let your temper get to that level while teaching small children is DISGUSTING. She should be pulled from the position immediately. Please, don't send your children here. There are two other FANTASTIC aerial arts schools in the woodlands and Conroe. She can not go on being allowed to teach children. If you care about your child's emotional well-being, you won't bring them here.

Didn't even make it to the class. Tried to sign up using an…read moreapp that did not work. Also did not answer any of my phone calls. I am just trying to dance and wasted 25 minutes of my own time so now I'm salty.. Hopefully they are more organized in the future because it looks really fun.
