Even in paradise, the scent of unleaded fuel lingers…read more Kaua'i, for all its waterfalls and wild chickens, still needs gas stations. And so, there I was--fresh from a morning of papayas and poke at Foodland, standing beside my rented Jeep Wrangler, hoping to perform the humble ritual of topping off the tank. Enter Sunoco. Located conveniently near my beloved Foodland, this station reminds you, rather suddenly, that not everything on the island is kissed by the aloha spirit. It was a simple request: fill the tank. I approached the pump, ready to go. But this station--like a riddle wrapped in red tape--required me to input the exact dollar amount of gas I wanted before pumping. No pre-authorization. No top-off. No island ease. I inquired for help. The attendant responded with the warmth of a DMV clerk on a double shift. Curt. Grumpy. Not particularly interested in my mainland confusion. So I guessed. Guessed wrong. Drove off partially full and vaguely annoyed, like a tourist who forgot to remove the lens cap during the entire Na Pali coast boat tour. But such is life. Sunoco isn't a destination. It's a reminder--that even here, among swaying palms and perfect sunsets, you'll still find a few grumpy gatekeepers and the occasional reminder of big city hassle. I wouldn't go out of my way for this place. But if your gas light's on and your papaya haul is weighing down the Jeep... well, you'll make do. Just know exactly how much you need--because they'll make sure you do.
