So, I have lived in the West End for two years now - having lived in other parts of town before - and this is by far one of the most expensive and least welcoming pubs I have been to in Edinburgh. This evening I went there with four colleagues; Teuchters is very close to my home and while I had never been very impressed before I felt that it was worth another shot, so I bought a round of drinks. The total was slightly above what I would expect to pay in Edinburgh. But, so far no comment.
Except, after a further pint we had a member of staff approach us to say that we were approaching last orders; fair enough. Again, so far no comment. But, literally 30 seconds later we had another staff member approach to ask me - I was the last of our group to have anything left, and at that seriously less than half a pint with 5 minutes until close to go - to finish my drink. I assured him that I was aware that they were closing and that I would be finished quickly. He apparently didn't think this was good enough and proceeded to engage in a lengthy exchange in which he felt it necessary to not only chastise me, but also watch me drink the remainder of my pint. There were other people still present drinking, but he didn't feel the need to watch them. I appreciate that he may have had a bad day etc but I went to my local pub with a small group of visitors so that we could unwind after a long day of conferences, only to feel that I was being made to feel unwelcome with no legitimate reason at all.
My experience of Teuchters is that they are overpriced, whilst also not providing the welcoming and massively knowledgable staff of a place like the Hanging Bat - literally a 7 minute walk away -. and that I am made to feel actively unwelcome. Massively not impressed. read more
