If you find yourself in Hilo, Hawaii, come check this place out for some good ramen! They have many selections of ramen, so you can't go wrong. All of the ramen we had were delicious! We tried the Curry Tonkotsu, Ajitama, and Egg drop ramens. The broths were all very rich and tasty. The ramens were of good size. The waiters were very attentive and fast. The restaurant has about 3 large booths that can accommodate 8 people. They have a bar where you can eat and drink as well. This was our last stop on my self-guide whirlwind tour of the big island last month - funny enough, I was mostly excited to have what I figured, given Hawaii has so much amazing Japanese food, and being that they are specifically a ramen restaurant, would be some of the best ramen I'd had. I would say, the service when we were here was like 10 out of 5, crazy-fast service, but the ramen itself was... good. No complaints, it was flavorful enough, but not mind-blowing - I have had better ramen in Los Angeles, if admittedly none I can think of that's quite as good in Long Beach. Elsewhere in LA though, for sure. But they also had a fried ramen noodle dish listed as a "special", which I shared (along with the ramen) with my wife, that absolutely was mind-blowingly good - I dunno how limited that special is, but I'd be sad if I were ever back, and couldn't get it. It was a truly extraordinarily delicious fried noodle dish. We also added pork belly for $5, which I also solidly recommend - some of the best pork belly I've had, very much worth the extra $5. If you're there during happy hour, they also have *very* inexpensive Japanese beer, and fresh-squeezed lemon shochu high balls - we finished eating right around when happy hour started, so I was happy they gave us the happy hour price still. I also loved the presentation - they mean it when they say "fresh-squeezed", they give you a lemon wedge and a personal citrus juicer, can't get more fresh squeezed than that! Anyway, it's simple, but highly refreshing, goes great with ramen, and during happy hour, is extremely reasonably priced. So bonus points for that, too, not that they need any, as long as they keep selling that fried noodle dish and such great pork belly! read more

Absolutely authentic japanese experience. You can choose to sit in a booth or on a serial table. If you choose the later, you get a blocked front view with wooden wall pinned with pics of menu item making it easy to choose and place order. Dishes were tasty. My family and I stopped in to get some Japanese food before a flight. I gladly recommend their light deep-fried Tofu. Their croquettes were also quite delicious! I also enjoyed their ramen (the broth was actually quite good!) Me being the oddball, I ended up ordering their Karaage Chicken plate, which was delicious if a bit overcooked. One of the better places to eat in Hilo for Japanese food especially ramen. Usually as you enter you will hear "Irasshaimase" which means welcome. They even ask how do you want your ramen noodles soft, regular, or firm. To me regular is firm enough, so I would never get firm, but to each their own. You can also just how much oil is put as well. With all the different ramen broths they have, you should find one you like. I usually go with the regular tonkotsu broth, but have tried and liked others. We had a little bell that we could ring when we needed service. We had a large party, so we got to try several dishes. Takoyaki: smaller than we expected. It had the flavor of squid, but there was no actual squid inside. Karage: super crunchy! Loved the texture, but on the blander side for flavor. Hiyashi tantanmen: my first time eating tonkotsu ramen as a cold fish. Very flavorful and great for hot summer days. Hiyashi chuka: I personally preferred this cold noodle dish over the tantanmen because of the daishi. It can get a bit too salty, the more you eat it though. Tonkotsu shoyu standard: rich broth and very flavorful. Pretty simple ramen, so it's perfect if you don't want a lot of extra things. Egg drop ramen: the soup reminded me of steamed eggs. Not actually egg drop soup, but it was still pretty good. I like that you can choose the softness of the noodles for the ramens and if you want to add garlic oils or pork fats into it. All the dishes we got were pretty good, and we would definitely come back, if we actually lived here. read more

Ample parking, friendly staff, fast service, and good food. We happened on this place on Father's Day and were happy to see this place open. The restaurant is on the smaller side with very few tables and a small bar area. I can see guests waiting and lining up for a seat during the dinner and lunch hours. We were lucky that we arrived before six and got quickly seated. We ordered ramen, rice bowl and fries. Everything came out quickly and hot. The ramen was tasty with a rich broth. Noodles were chewy with large pieces of pork. The char siu rice bowl was flavorful with hot rice covered in sauce. Fries were also very crispy and hot. Everything tasted so well prepared. Tetsumen is a nice little restaurant with a traditional Japanese feel. There's not many places open on Mondays in Hilo, but luckily Tetsumen is one of the few. They had a lot of takeout orders during lunch, but the inside of the restaurant was pretty empty. The waitress was very apologetic about the number of takeout orders and extremely kind. I got the standard miso ramen and gyoza. The miso ramen was very delicious, and I loved all of the toppings. The texture of the noodle was perfect, and there was a good miso flavor. The gyoza was on a stick, and they made it super fresh. It was crispy on the outside, and the inside filling was flavorful. I liked the sauce that it was served with. I am from Vancouver and we have plenty of authentic ramen over here. I wasn't expecting good ramen here on Big Island but I was wrong. This is really on par with the ones back home. If anything, it could be one of my top 5s. I chose the ajitama miso tokotsu with firm noodles, normal pork oil and rich mayu. So much umami with the pork oil and garlic oil. I miss Japan so much! Tetsumen was pretty amazing. The decor was very cute, similar to ramen shops. We came for lunch around 12:30 and had a five min wait. Service was fast and friendly. Shoyu ramen was delicious, my son ate it all. I got the miso ramen. Perfect egg, delicious pork and the veggies were blanched which was perfect. A great experience for Japanese food! The food was amazing and large portions. My fam went HAM and ordered multiple items. The girls ordered ramen (tonkatsu & curry) and I got the chicken donburi. Holy smokes, it was delicious and so much. I felt ashamed bc the "young Daniel" would've finished everything. But I couldn't power through. We came here for a late dinner at 8 PM right after arriving in Hilo. This place is open pretty late and is a great location for hikers coming back from Volcano National Park after dark. It had been raining all day so we were looking for some warm food. The restaurant was packed when we got here but luckily there was an empty table right by the entrance. We were dressed for the weather so it wasn't too cold. They have a thick physical menu with lots of pictures and pages. You can either tell a waitstaff what you want from the physical menu or you can scan a QR code to order from your phone. I highly recommend ordering from your phone because the online menu will be up-to-date with what is still available (depending on the day and time). So if the physical menu has something you want but the online menu doesn't, then that means that item is no longer available for the day. If you're ordering with a waitstaff, then they'll just tell you at that time if something isn't available. With that being said, most of what we wanted to order was out of stock which made sense since it was so late. So we ended up getting a stamina bowl, a plenty vegetable ramen, a char siu ramen, and an order of tonkatsu. The ramen ordering system is pretty straightforward if you know what you want. You decide the firmness of the ramen, how much oil is in the broth, and whether or not you want ma-yu in the broth. Ma-yu, which is burnt garlic oil, is a pretty common Japanese condiment that is usually included in ramen. If you want more flavor in the broth then add more oil and vice versa. However, keep in mind that the broth might get too greasy if you add too much. So maybe don't go overboard unless you know what you want. The stamina bowl is definitely named aptly. There is a lot of rice and meat with an egg on top. So come hungry or be prepared to have leftovers or plan to walk it off afterwards. The plenty vegetable ramen is just the standard ramen with more vegetables, bean sprouts, and cabbage. I kind of overloaded on meat over the past few days so I just wanted to go light and have more veggies. I got it with ma-yu, normal amount of oil, normal noodle firmness. I think it turned out well. I liked the richness of the broth. The char siu ramen was a bit too heavy. I forgot to take into account that the char siu would have oil too so adding the normal amount of oil to the broth made it too salty and greasy. The tonkatsu was just okay. The batter was thick, pretty crispy, and the meat was kind of tender. I got some tartar sauce but it wasn't very tartar-y at all. I almost thought it was mayonnaise. Overall the food was okay. Despite my mistake for messing up one of the ramens, I've definitely had better ramen and tonkatsu. read more

Probably the best Ramen on Hilo Side. I have been here a few times and they never disappoint. As soon as you walk in the staff greets you with a smile and the traditional Japanese way. It's always packed here so i recommend calling ahead to make a reservation or just be prepared to wait like everyone else. The turn over is quick so don't worry. This place has everything, ramen, rice dishes, curry etc. I've had a little bit of everything here. So yum. They even have combos if you can't decide so you can try multiple things at once. They have menus everywhere or you scan the barcode which allows you to order everything through your phone. The ambiance is chill. Feels like your in Japan at a ramen bar. There were a lot of people waiting ahead of us and also after us and I wondered why they wouldn't just seat everyone til the restaurant were full then have everyone else wait. We were seated at the first both and condensation from the a/c kept dripping on me, my daughter, and our seat. I was glad it wasn't in my food but that was another disappointment. We did mention it to server but it seemed that they already knew about it. The server seemed like he had the whole place to attend to.
