There are random boxes strewn about the store and the security guard watches everybody like they're stealing something. I was visiting from USA so I just wanted to find some "British" treats to take home... Chocolates, chips, stuff like that... They had a decent variety of those types of things but otherwise this would be a store if you were in a pinch and needed a quick snack and that's about it. There's an M & S store right around the corner at the entrance to the train station that's much cleaner and nicer and has more options plus the same thing.

They don't have a vast array of publications on sale, other than the main UK newspapers, but there is a small shop across the road that sell the largest collection of magazines and newspapers from around the world, in all languages that I have ever seen. I am aware as I live nearby and have seen this happen over many months. They lie and say machine isn't working (even when it does as I've used the machine). They tell parcel owners to go elsewhere to drop off packages as they refuse to accept. They likely pocket a monthly fee for pretending to accept EVRI packages, so this is fraudulent behavior.

But there is more to this shop than it's handy location (near Chinatown on Shaftesbury Avenue). Check-out their window displays...this is pop-tart central! For a tiny shop, Crispins has a ridiculously large selection of treats imported from the US (pop-tarts, brownie mixes, pancake mixes, runts, mini reese's peanut butter cups and yes Brach's candy corn). Candy corn is not so easy to come by in London, so the fact that they have some and at a semi-reasonable price ( £1.99/bag), this shop is clearly 4 stars in my book.

It was very busy inside with what I imagine was mostly the regular weekday comminutors. There are many self-checkouts so the line went fast. Advice for visitors: like the vast majority of stores in the UK, make sure you bring your own bag or you will be charged for one.

One of the reasons I deducted one star is because one of the female cashiers came off as being rude. She said, "If you want a bag, you should've said so" with so much spite. What in the world was going on in her life that she had to take it out on a customer? Meanwhile, on the other spectrum, her coworkers went out of their way trying to help me find shelf stable milk since my hotel didn't have a fridge. So pros: convenient, helps save some money, some of the employees go out of their way to be helpful. Cons: At least one female cashier needs to be spoken to by management about how she talks to customers.

This is where the locals shop and I was able to pop in and grab what I needed before hopping onto the Underground. Prices seemed to be right in line with the Tesco Extras out in the suburbs and I found the staff to be efficient.

A huge organic selection. A whole shelf of tea. Racks of dried fruits (I am not addicted to dried figs), nuts (cashews!) and I even found jars of sunflower butter here...which is surprisingly good and a good alternative to peanut butter (which they also have). Fantastic ethnic cooking section chock full of sauces, ingredients, grains, rices, beans and any element you probably need, spices, decent bakery with breads, rolls, pitas, etc. Eggs and dairy, beer, wine, a lot of coconut water, and a fresh produce section (outside) which is standard, but nice to have. Things you won't find: fresh meats or fish. Par for the course! The family that runs it is very friendly as well (always so polite!) and I always leave feeling quite good about supporting a local food shop that is not only convenient, but tucked away from the madness of the Old Street roundabout. So, we quickly headed out and looked for something else. We stumbled into M&s and, even though it was later in the day, they still had a variety of options to choose from. We grabbed a few sandwiches, snacks, and drinks and headed out. Overall, this definitely wasn't the best meal we had in London, but it was one of the most convenient and it was tasty for the price. It gave us just enough energy to keep going and did at least a result in us wandering through for additional snacks at least one more time during our visit. As foreigners in this location, it did take us a little bit to acclimate to the process of selecting our food and paying but overall it was very easy and we were on our way quickly.
