Sometimes the queues here…read morecan get a bit annoying especially if waiting for petrol and the person in front has gone off to do some shopping leaving their car at the pump. Inside the shop it is well lit and well maintained, they have a much smaller range of goods but again the quality of what they do sell is still good, even their fresh food. Also they usually have a selection of some of the offers on in the larger Tesco stores which is handy. The staff are friendly and are kept on their toes by a constant stream of customers but any queues inside the shop tend to go down fairly quickly.

There's halal butcher on site as well. Along with (relatively) fresh food, there is a good deli with good selection of cheese at the back. There's a sweet shop for the kids. You can get any African related goods, sundries and sauces (like banana flour?). The Chinese stall has most of your Asian basics. The Algerian guy in his glass box has most of your Mediterranean related goods (Turkish-Greek-Italian etc.). You have an excellent selection of Indian food-related items. There is also the flea market which takes up half the market space. I tend to stick to the food. The flea market goods are usually cheap, but not always value for money. Often cheap imports from who knows where. It is good for some things, Thermal socks I bought seem ok. The silk flowers seem in fine form too. I'd steer towards basic items - where price does not affect quality so much. Here it is a race to the bottom in terms of price point, so do not expect a fancy hipster farmers market. This is a classic Marketplace where you come from your weekly shop. The trick here is that you need to apply a bit of sense. Fruit that is out of season is going to be 1. expensive or 2. a cheap import that tastes terrible or rots in a day. If you use your good judgement you can walk a way with good haul for decent price. Most produce and meat is around Tesco-Sainsbury prices but the quality is definitely better. We (a young couple) do our weekly shop in about 50 pounds. That's fruit/veg and about 3 kilos of meat and other sundries like pasta, sauces, spices. There's parking at the multi story in the lower precinct. It's not that expensive. If you need other bits and bobs e.g. Milk, Iceland is right out front. It's not the most glamorous place in the world, but I look forward to my weekly visits.

It is no secret that I am a fan of a market and this one never fails to please. A very large indoor…read moremarket situated in the city centre, there is plenty of variety to choose from. Fantastic quality fruit and veg (including more exotic, hard to find items), luggage, clothing, vintage records, meat and fish, groceries, costumes, toys, takeaway food, shoe repairs and key cutting are to name but a few. I would definitely recommend shopping here over the supermarkets, the quality is better and you'll also probably make a saving. The reason this falls short of 5 stars is that the camaraderie that I've found at other markets is missing, resulting in a slightly stale atmosphere when I think the whole point of coming to a place like this is because it is usually more jolly than your high street store!

I, however, think it is a great shop and many bargains can be found. I went in on the opening day and was randomly picked by a strange man with a microphone who presented me with a £10 poundland voucher! I bought a leather ipod case (selling for £15 in Argos), some padded envelopes, chocolate, batteries to name a few, certainly got my moneys worth. Plenty of CDs & DVDs to choose from too, not exactly the latest hollywood blockbusters, but some good choices nonetheless.

Not just a little bit - but 38 weeks with a bump the size of a small country. Now most women get to this point of pregnancy and start 'nesting', which generally I believe for most involves frantic cleaning, dusting and generally making the place lovely for the new addition. Not me - yes I do clean everything to within an inch of its life - but I am more alarmingly suddenly obsessed with power tools !!! Not sure if this is hormone induced or what - but I certainly was not like it before the pregnancy. I have always been a tomboy (n.b big brother is a computer nerd so I have always been pushed by pater to be the manly one), but this obsession with the purchase and use of power tools is I have to say a new phenomenon. I have just sat down to write this having spent 2 happy hours with my latest purchase - an orbital sander. Wow its good!! and it was purchased for a mere £19.99 from Aldi. I have now sanded every door and skirting board in the house and have ran out of justifiable surfaces to sand. The point of all this being (yes there is one). I thought Aldi was all about cheap and I admit sub-standard food in rubbish packaging. Wrong. After weeks of hearing in the press and from various aquaintances how Aldi is the way to go what with the 'credit crunch' and all - I decided to venture in. The environment is very basic, and its hard to get used to the way you have to chuck all your stuff back in the trolley at the checkout and pack it later. Its no frills city. Everything is kind of chucked here there and everywhere so it is hard to find stuff - but if you like foraging and bargain hunting you will enjoy this. My over all conclusion was that there was a very distinct lack of choice regarding meat, ready meals, and frozen products, so I would certainly look elsewhere for these products. The fruit and veg was really inexpensive and as good quality as anywhere else- again you are not going to get the more unusual choices there - but for basics you cannot beat it. Where else would you get a whole pineapple for 59p? But the best bit for me was the piles of weird and wonderful power tools and random gadgets, at knock down prices. I spotted a welding tool that looked really cool - so may be due a return visit next weekend? Not sure what I am gonna weld - but I am sure I will find something.. p.s For general amusement value and for stock of odd gizmos I would award Aldi a 5, but for a sensible overall food shop - only a 3 sorry.

There is also plenty of car spaces both disabled and regular which seems a bonus compared to most other 'conveniance' type stores. There is always food on the shelves and staff who are all very friendly are constantly refilling them. It is however rather expensive probably because of its 'conveniance' nature and it does generally seem to add 20% to the price of a regular tesco store. The main problem would be that the cash machine is well off down the side of the building. At night this feels very intimidating as there is only one light near this area, it's off the road beside the end of the car park and its almost out of sight of the main street and the front of the store. My only bad point about this place is the Magic Corn stall slap bang in the middle. They sell pots of sweetcorn - well I think they do, I've never seen anyone buy it, you can smell it constantly when you're in the place but I have no idea how the stall is still there as the stuff stinks. I can't see this being a terribly successful concession, but there it is, day after day. Ho hum! Parking is ample and there's plenty of services here, just don't forget that the Yew Tree is not too far away and the shops there need your business too.
