They have so many good snacks to keep you munching on the road: jerky, candied pecans and nuts, Beaver Chips, soda, slushies, and all kinds of coffee to keep you hydrated and awake. The restrooms are clean and huge, especially the ladies' restroom. No need to wait in a long line! They also have souvenirs and so many other things to browse. The staff are super friendly. Everyone seems so proud and happy to work here, which makes the experience even better. The gas station has tons of pumps, so you won't have to wait long to fill up. Honestly, Buc-ee's is my favorite stop, even when I don't need gas, I'll still stop here. They have everything for everyone. At first sight, it was so overwhelmingly large with three large covered gas pump areas. Upon going inside, it was definitely larger than any truck stop in California. I was told the first area to visit at Buc-ee's are the restrooms. Definitely well kept and much cleaner than any gas stations period that I have ever been to. I definitely did not go there just to check out the bathrooms, but for the many Buc-ee's logo'd souvenirs, snacks and especially barbecue seasonings and sauces. Their hot food area like hot Brisket sandwiches, sausage wrapped in a tortilla on a stick, brisket burritos, candied nuts, a wall of almost every fountain drink available, slushies, and so much more. I had to go through my list of items to pick up as well as items requested by friends and family. It felt like it was my first time at an amusement park or the toy store. I think we were short of two hours trying to make sure we got everything we came for. Just in case I missed anything or didn't get to try a sample of fudge, jerky, nuts, cookies, or whatever else, we had plans to go to San Antonio the following day and there would be a Buc-ee's on the way at New Braunfels. Sure enough, we made a quicker stop in the New Braunfels location just before San Antonio. It was a fun experience and definitely anytime I am passing by a Buc-ee's location, I am going in planned or not planned.

I've NEVER had anything but great experiences. The service is great! They have a little bit of everything you may want to snack on, the atmosphere is and always has been friendly and inviting. When we sat everything up on the counter, the cashier asked to see ID. I asked if she needed to see both (he drove, so luckily I brought my wallet), and she said "I'm sure he's buying it, but since you touched the beer, I need to see yours too." We both provided our IDs. (By the way, why was she sure he was buying it? Some women are actually allowed to have their own money/make purchases for themselves these days!) I had never heard about a "touching" related rule for buying alcoholic beverages, so I asked whether it was a different law for convenience stores than it was for grocery stores, or what, and the cashier became visibly angry and would only repeat over and over that she "worked there" and refused to answer any questions, asking why I wanted to know since she was letting us buy the beer. I told her that I'm a person who is interested in learning things, but that didn't seem to help. Anyway, I don't think that "anyone who is accompanying a person buying alcohol, and who touches the drink in question, must provide valid ID" would work as a store policy. What about people who bring in their 10 year old children? If a kid helps their parent carry stuff to the register does that mean the parent can't buy alcohol? I used to shop at a grocery store in Abilene near the conservative religious university that I attended for graduate school, and I was used to both my husband and I being carded there (so if this cashier had said "yes" when I asked whether she needed to see both of our IDs, rather than giving a nonsensical explanation related to "touching," I wouldn't have pursued it any further), but that had nothing to do with whether someone "touched" the alcoholic beverage and everything to do with the fact that the store was near a college campus, and one belonging to the Church of Christ, at that. So I'm a little put off by that cashier's attitude. Before this point I'd come in a few times at the beginning of my morning commute, to buy breakfast tacos or biscuits, and they tasted okay (not great) and the two women working in the morning were quite pleasant and willing to engage in conversation. I can't say that I won't hesitate to come to this store in the future, but I'm sure I'll be back eventually. Hopefully this experience was an anomaly for one reason or another.

And the place is a time machine, rolling back the decades. Little has changed here in the past three quarters of a century, which makes it very charming. They have farm-fresh eggs, locally-grown salad greens, sausage, cheese, breakfast tacos, baked-from-scratch pop tarts, Texas pretzel bread and other items in this small store, without feeling crowded. At the coffee bar, I had a cortado (Spain's take on a cappuccino -- equal parts espresso and steamed milk) along with a little chocolate truffle. We also picked up some Opa Klein's amazing summer sausage and a six pack of Stash IPA to go. We're coffee snobs. We'll be back for the best cuppa joe in town, at a minimum. Special thanks to Mike K (one of Tracy's baristas) for telling us about this place as he serenaded us during brunch at downtown restaurant. He's a very talented guy, and very proud to be associated with this quaint and historic Bastrop fixture. You know you're doing something right as a business owner when your staff naturally delivers your best and most effective marketing, just from the sheer enthusiasm and pride of working there. So, yeah, it's a tiny little time warp, but it's well run and worth coming to, especially if you're into great coffee.

I have had a long day working at home, and it takes me 20 min to drive into town, and today I'm doing it purely to come here because I like them, and they conveniently carry stuff I need. But wouldn't you know, I pull up at 7:48 and they are walking out. I think that's odd, they're closing almost 15 min early which is pretty crappy business practice, but regardless oh great I've caught them just in time. How foolish of me to think so...I wave to the woman, who surely recognizes me as a regular customer at this point, and say oh I'm just in time I only need one thing! and she looks at the older man who presumably runs the liquor shop and he starts shaking his head saying "no no no no, 8 o'clock we out of here!" Mind you, THE TIME IS NOW 7:50, and I pulled up several minutes ago. But they do not have one care, and lock their damn doors in my face. The trouble actually started yesterday (Sunday; the above happened on a Monday)--their hours on every online map & resource say the convenience store side is open on Sundays from 3-8pm. So I drive that damn 20 min to show up at 3:30-no one. Their barely legible hand scrawled hours on the door say closed on Sundays, of course. The liquor part yes, but why the store part? Alright whatever, great, perfect y'all, please make sure your freaking hours are updated on the internet, it's not that difficult! So that was another however many gallons of gas wasted two days in a row. Mostly I was just really let down & disappointed because I thought I'd found a perfect little place to make my new shop, but after this evening, having the door locked in my face 10+ min before closing time, it left me feeling really unvalued as a customer--like they don't give a crap, they just want to leave ASAP.
