The Happy Hour Margaritas were amazingly great. The Queso with ground beef also came with pickled jalapeños on the side. Cassandra recommend it to us and we were most definitely happy. Yes the food is good, the service is s l o w... especially at the barm see the bartenders also have to wait tables. So if tou are at the bar and empty it could be forever before you are waited on especially on the weekends. Plus,.they charge an addtional almost 4 percent Fee for credt cards and debit. I don't leave a lot of reviews. Being in the restaurant business for the first part of my life I have a warm place in my heart for all restaurants. However, I managed... I walked into this place and was kind of excited. I love a good Mexican place especially one that's off the beaten path and for me this was off the beaten path. I sit down to the bar and waited about 10 minutes before the bartender who had a phone between her ear and her shoulder asking if I wanted anything. I asked her for a beer and she was quick to give it to me before she turned to keep talking on the phone. She looked at me about 10 minutes later and asked me if there's anything I needed and I said yes the menu would be good. And quite honestly some chips and salsa. She had to be a menu and kept talking on the phone. I finished my beer, set it to the side close to the edge of the bar so that she would notice it was out. Finally, she turned and said can I get you something I said yes in order my meal. And told her at the time and maybe some chips and salsa. And another beer. She brought back the beer and I'm pretty quick order. My dinner came out. The lady asked me if I wanted anything else and I said yes chips would be great. I'd really planned on sitting there for an hour or two as my wife had an appointment and having dinner chips and salsa and a few beers. But the fact that she never removed the phone from my ear and I ran completely out of beer and had to wait 10 minutes or more between each beer I simply ask another waiter for a box. He told her, and once she had a break in her phone conversation, she brought me a box. I packed it up and left.. I wasn't able to enjoy the salsa much but the fact that the salsa pretty much didn't even taste like tomato sauce was a red flag to me. Maybe I just had a very bad experience because there were an awful lot of people in there having fun and enjoying it, but that will be probably my last trip. read more

Coming off of a week long cruise is never easy, but finding great food on the way home makes it way better. I was a little skeptical when we pulled up. The parking is a little strange and not much is around this place that is still open or in business. I could not have been more pleasantly surprised. We were greeted by a friendly staff and seated immediately. The service was phenomenal and our waiter was absolutely delightful as he shared his love of his city with us since we had never been to Texas City before. Our food was out quickly and our drinks were never empty. He was awesome. I wish I had gotten his name so I could mention him specifically...I think it was Javon or something like that. He definitely made our experience extra amazing! We ended up getting the queso and a combo plate with a taco, a tostada, an enchilada and rice and beans. If I could have eaten everything and licked the plate, I would have! Everything was exactly what I love about good Mexican food. Cheesy, saucy, seasoned and delicious! I had to try this restaurant since I had heard this was supposed to be one of the better ones in town. I came for lunch on a weekday and was the first customer. I wish I could give this place 3.5 stars. I really like the atmosphere, they have the lighting down pat, it's similar to a real mexican cantina that you would find in mexico, of course this one has a/c though. Its housed in an older building from probably the 1940s or earlier, so it has all the interior character and architecture of a building from that era. The food was okay, just nothing special. Chips and salsa were just average too. The chips tasted like ones you could buy at the grocery store, the red salsa was warm and the green salsa was cold. Neither of them were spicy by any means and as far as taste, they were good, just not great. I ordered the lunch fajitas, which were chicken, and found them to be juicy, just nothing spectacular. In fact, all of the lunch specials were with chicken. None with beef fajita. The fajitas came sliced similar to a steak fry and we're served on a steaming hot comal with grilled onions. Rice and beans also came with it, along with a plate containing shredded cheese, sour cream, guacamole, and pico de gallo. After perusing the lunch menu, I found all items were priced between $8 and $10. I find this a little on the high side for Texas city, but I paid it anyway. Not sure if I'll be back anytime soon. Too bad I was working and didn't come on a Sun, Mon or Wed when they have $1.99 house margaritas. Happy Hour starts at 11am daily. read more

Came here for lunch over the weekend. The staff is friendly and the restaurant is clean. Our waiter was very attentive and friendly. Their red salsa is fantastic and we couldn't get enough of it. If you want some old school Tex-Mex this is your place. Part of this restaurant people still smoke in, so if that is an issue choose somewhere else. The food was good, the service was good but the bathrooms were dirty. That always gives me a bad feeling. Nothing worse than eating somewhere that the bathrooms are not clean. I became a regular customer once my best friend started working here. The waitstaff is super friendly. Great place to go for dirt cheap margaritas that are strong and good. My food never takes more than 10 minutes to come out. It's a very small restaurant, so if you have a large party you should definitely call ahead. read more

My family and I came here on our way home from Galveston. This is a smaller restaurant, not too crowded and the staff was friendly. We started out with the creamy spinach stuffed avocados. They sounded amazing, but we're slightly disappointing. It was one whole large avocado cut in half with creamy spinach and cheese on top..that's it. I ordered a combination plate that consisted of a beef and bean tostado, (yum!), crispy taco, cheese enchilada..and rice and beans. It was more then a TON of food for a decent price! The beef and bean tostada was my favorite. The beans had a bacon flavor to them, they were really good! The taco meat they use is also very very good. It's they type of taco meat that's greasy and had juicy onions and peppers in it. Rice and enchilada were ok. Nothing to special. I would give 3.5 if I could give half stars. This was my first time eating there. I had previously picked up to-go food a couple times, and it was pretty good. Good enough to try again, anyway. So tonight I had a jumbo frozen "top shelf" margarita and a combination plate that had a CCQ chip, a beef taco, guacamole, cheese enchiladas, and rice and beans. At first taste, I was ambivalent about the margarita. I really like to TASTE the tequila in a margarita, and I didn't think it was that strong. But by the end of it, I had a surprisingly good buzz going, so it was obviously stronger than I thought it was! The combo plate came in two servings - first plate had the taco, a small scoop of guac, and the CCQ chip. The guacamole was a *very* small scoop (but in their defense, the whole combo was under $9 so I can't complain. I'll just order extra next time). I am kind of a guacamole "purist." I would rather have nothing but mashed avocado and a squeeze of lime than have too much other stuff mixed in. It drives me NUTS when I go somewhere and either the texture is unrecognizable due to whipping with other ingredients, or it has as much tomato and onion as avocado. This guacamole was very basic - primarily avocado, just like I like it! The beef taco was surprisingly good! I say that because I generally don't order ground beef tacos, unless they happen to come with a combo plate, because I usually find them to be pretty plain. But the taco beef was very tasty and I liked it very much! The cheese enchiladas were OK. Not wonderful, but OK. I LOVE cheese. The cheesier a cheese dish, the better. I'd have liked these to be cheesier, creamier, gooier. The chili gravy was pretty good, but could have been a bit spicier. The rice was run of the mill mexican rice. The refried beans were just right. I had previously had beef quesadillas there, but forgot to review them then. I do recall that I liked them a lot. I'll have to try them again and do a proper review sometime. Definitely worth 3.5 stars, and a good value too. I'll have to try some more items to see if I can round up to 4. read more

Not very busy for 1pm on a Sunday, but less crowds was ok to me. Apetizer was a spinach & cheese stuffed avacado. It was ok to me and sounded better on the menu description. I had a beef chile relleno special with double rice. I really enjoyed it! Nice fluffy crust with chile con carne sauce. The portion was huge and the meat was seasoned and cooked perfectly. They did not skimp at all with the filling. You could get 2 descent sized relleno's with just the filling from one here. Came with homemade flour tortillas as well. Daughter is telling me she really liked her cheese enchiladas and the refried beans. She said they had a good bacon taste to them. I'm guessing maybe they refried them in bacon grease and who dosent enjoy bacon flavor. The restraunt itself was pretty cool inside and had a great cantina vibe. There was a little bar and a single pool table. Pricing was pretty good as well. Stoped in Texas City just for this place on a recommendation and I'm glad I did. read more
