Waiting for our bus

Really the only way to travel to Playa del Carmen, Isla Mujeres, Merida, and other nearby townships from Cancun short of renting a car. We went to Isla Mujeres, so I'll detail how to finagle that. The TL;DR version: download the ADO app, estimate 1.5-2.5 hrs between the island and the airport. When you land at the airport, withdraw pesos from the ATM (bring a card that doesn't charge you conversion fees like CapitalOne 360), and buy tickets at the designated ADO booth without leaving the airport premises (pirated tickets galore). - Cash only, and it's 98 pesos (US$5) to ADO Bus Terminal in Cancun metro. - Buy one way, because round trip tickets fix your time and they won't let you on earlier or later. The round trip savings are less than a US$1 anyway. Not worth sitting at the terminal for 45 mins on your way back (where do you think I am writing this right now?). From the bus terminal, get a taxi for 70 pesos to go to Puerto Juarez. Don't ask how much; just offer: "Setenta (70) pesos al Puerto Juarez?" They'll counter anywhere between 150 and 250, but walk a few steps out, cross the street to go to McDonalds, and a cab driver there will take you. Ignore the counter offers on your way to McD, and on the third-ish try, you'll get a nice gentleman to take you. Pay upon arrival, ofc. This leg should take 15 mins. (To put your savings in context, 75 pesos is a strong, yummy mezcal-rita/cocktail at happy hour on the island.) (Also, the cab price that locals pay is 50-80 pesos for this route, so 70 isn't bad.) Get to the port. By now you hopefully have a PDF of the Ultramar ticket that you bought online, but if not, do that, and buy round trip. It comes with a QR code, and you can use your return ticket any time within the next 6 months. The actual boat ride is 20 mins even (they claim 18 but we left 3 mins late); add in 5 mins for boarding, and board 20-30 mins ahead of time to cool down in AC. If it's in the evening, sit on the top deck for the sunset and ocean winds. Huge error on the website, btw: it says a boat leaves every half hr in the morning, but as of now (Jul 2021), it leaves every hour on the hour, so nota bene there! And that gets you to Isla Mujeres (and back)! My Isla Mujeres collection is public under my account. Enjoy the beach and your mezcalritas!

Very easy to navigate even with my limited Spanish. Only $105 pesos per person to the airport , either way.

From the beginning their customer service was not helpful. We wanted to do a private car and reached out if there were any additional perks. They weren't helpful! I even asked if the driver could have ice on arrival and never got a response. You don't even get a bottle of water for free! What kind of luxury is this. I asked for a sign upon arrival with my IG traveling page handle they did not. The lady they sent did not seem like she even wanted to greet us she was all the way in the back and wasn't even looking for us. I had to go up to her. We waited a few minutes for the car. It was clean. The driver on the way to the hotel was nice enough to stop by the gas station so we could look for charcoal. Other than that the drive was a bit scary but I did tip since he made a stop. The driver on the way back to the airport was not friendly.

He also called the company a week prior to confirm that they would be available to pick us up since our arrival was at 1 am. They took our payment and confirmed that everything was fine. The night we arrived in Cancun, my husband turned off airplane mode and had an email from Paypal refunding our payment of $125.00 on behalf of Cancun Airport Transportation company. So we were such at the airport at 2:00 am, trying to find someone to take us to Playa del Carmen! We had to pay another company $150.00 to take us to our resort because we didn't have much of a choice. Please do not depend on them to get you where you need to go. They will let you down!

Extremely disappointed in this service. Our flights were cancelled, and we asked to be taken to our…read morenew hotel in Cancun on the way to the airport from Playa del Carmen. We also requested that they simply stop at the hotel on the way to the airport, and they flatly refused to add it as a stop. Despite the hotel being only 7 minutes from the airport, they demanded an additional $65, claiming it was a "new service." This was unreasonable, especially since we were not asking for a separate trip, only a stop along the existing route--not to go to the airport first and then be taken to the hotel. The driver was not the issue at all--drivers are clearly restricted and monitored by GPS. The problem lies entirely with the reservation staff, who were rigid, unhelpful, and unwilling to offer any solution. They even claimed that no manager was available, which is both inexcusable and highly questionable during peak season. This was an overpriced, inflexible, and poorly managed service that added stress to an already difficult travel situation. I would not recommend this company to anyone expecting reasonable customer service or flexibility.

Xel-Há - Stunning Nature, So-So Food, and Skip the Timeshare…read more Xel-Há is easily one of the more beautiful and enjoyable destinations in the Quintana Roo area. The natural surroundings, cenotes, lazy river, and waterslides offer a full day of adventure and relaxation. If you break down the ticket price by the activities included, it's actually a solid overall value. But let's be clear: this is not a 5-Diamond experience. The food is the biggest letdown. The buffet is nothing special--average at best. The fries, in particular, are almost always cold and soggy, thanks to a heating system that doesn't keep up, even when food is freshly made. It's the kind of food that fills you up but doesn't leave an impression. A few tips to help you make the most of your trip: * Buy tickets online in advance - This helps you skip the lines and sometimes score a small discount. * Avoid visiting during election season - Due to Mexican law, no alcohol is served during this time, even at tourist locations. If part of your plan is to sip a drink by the water, plan around that. * Skip the timeshare presentation - While it might sound like a good deal (free breakfast + discounted or free tickets), it's really just a pitch to buy into a discount program. You're not buying a vacation home--just access to marked-up offers with a "discount" tag. If you do your homework, you can usually find better deals on your own. Bottom line: Go to Xel-Há for the nature and fun activities. Just manage your expectations with the food, and avoid the timeshare trap. It's worth a visit--just not worth believing the hype.

Then they tried to insinuate that it was our fault that we missed our bus a 5-minute checkout turned into a 30 minute checkout because a f****** on their part. on the drive back from xoximilco, there was a group of about 10 people that were clearly intoxicated, being very disruptive and nothing was done about it. Skip the timeshare presentation they told us that we would get a $400 massage and it turned out to be maybe a $70 massage also they say it's an hour and a half from beginning to end and it took over 2 1/2 hours. The all-inclusive is definitely worth it if you eat a lot and drink a lot which is something we did. on our last night there we went to restaurant that supposedly had the tomahawk steaks come to find out they didn't they had sent their meats to another restaurant so that was very disappointing. Staff is very friendly
