Teriyaki Salmon Set (John Steinbeck on the side)
    Paul K.

If you were to tell me eight years ago when I joined Yelp that I'd be giving four stars to a Japanese restaurant next to a pet store in Q-mart, I'd have first asked you how you figured out time travel and then I would have slapped you silly. Yet here I am, expressing to you, rightfully skeptical Yelper, that Teriyaki Chef may serve some of the best food in all of Quakertown. Gasp! Egads! This cannot be! Let's bring the negatives to the front first. Because Teriyaki Chef sits next to Q-mart's Fins, Feathers, Paws, and Claws this abutment naturally creates some issues. Depending on the day, the time, and the heat index, Teriyaki Chef can smell a little (okay, a lot) like Fins, Feathers, Paws, and Claws. The aroma of sodden bird bedding and stale cat litter mixing with your misoyaki chicken, as you may safely assume, is not super appetizing. Additionally, the shrieking of what I'm guessing is a large bird (though it could be a disgruntled employee?) will tear through the restaurant: "scrraaaaaaaWWWWCCCCHH!" Though this is not Teriyaki Chef's fault. Where Teriyaki Chef should be faulted is service. I've been here six times, always on a Friday night between the hours of 5:00 and 7:00. In almost every instance, the food has taken at least 25 minutes to reach my table. Stella, the proprietress, always seems in a rush and unhurried all at once, disappearing into the back kitchen for 5 to 10 minutes at a time. Another waitress often does the same, leaving patrons queuing at the cash register, and others (like me) desperately in need of a status update of their order. But, alas, Stella delivers when Stella delivers. And when she does, my god. That misoyaki chicken? It's an explosion of umami lacquered over juicy chicken thighs--salty, meaty, and almost mushroom-y. The saba shioyaki? It's mackerel, but inflected to a higher pitch with just the right amount of salt. The chicken curry? It's not the prettiest thing in the world to look at, but the curry is deep and complex and warming. From the katsudon to the spicy beef with bamboo shoots to the teriyaki salmon set--I've never had a bad dish. Hell, I've never had a mediocre dish. Each one is impossibly better than the last. The portions are stultifying and, when Stella finally gets around to ringing you up, the cost of the meal is always something preposterously inexpensive. $6.75 for two salmon fillets with rice and salad? Really, Stella? That's enough to make a man want to scrraaaaaaaWWWWCCCCHH with joy.

    Yakiniku Beef. Very tasty.

Favorite Japanese restaurant in Quakertown area. I usually get the tempura don, chicken teriyaki, or the beef yakiniku. Can't go wrong with any of these choices. Not to mention that the prices are very reasonable ($5-10). Decor is plain and simple, but the food is surprisingly authentic. Try the harumaki too for appetizers it's quite good too. Try it, you will not be disappointed.

Great little place! Everything is delicious and it is super cheap. We have done take out and eaten in, both times it was really good! Can take awhile when it's busy though. Worth it!

I noticed they had rack of lamb as an appetizer, so I wanted to try it since it is a unique selection; it was fantastic; tender, and it came with a small serving of mashed potatoes, which were also very tasty. Service was excellent as always too!

Food: I got the lunch box. My miso soup was fine, nothing to write home about. I got the shrimp…read moreshumai. There were only 3 and that had me pretty disappointed, but the flavor was on point. Moist inside with a crisp outer shell. Then the crispy calamari. A peppery batter and the inside was tender, not chewy. The portions for this were perfect, not too much, but a fair appetizer size. I finished off with the shrimp teriyaki. This was served on a bed of shredded vegetables and a side of rice. It had everything to be a good dish, but the sauce was lacking and tasted like a watered down teriyaki with pepper. I just wasn't here for it, but if you like an extremely mild teriyaki then it might be for you! Service: The waitress was attentive and even stopped by to refill my water. I really enjoy when they stop a few times so if you are needing extra sauce or condiments you can request them. Overall an ok experience. Ambiance: The atmosphere was different than I had expected. Dark walls with blue lights all over. The lighting was too dark for my personal taste and I'd prefer a classic white or candlelight style lighting when eating. Value: My meal was a great value for how much food I received and the variety of food. In total, my meal was $16 for 3 appetizer sized dishes, rice, and a bowl of soup. Recommend: If you are looking for a cool atmosphere with a fairly priced lunch menu, I would say this is the spot for you. If you were looking for bold flavors and a more authentic experience, I would opt to pass.

House…read moresalad was really just lettuce a few tomatoes overly dressed and drenched and the tempura appetizer, popcorn shrimp and pork gyozas had that chain restaurant flavor feel to it. the specialty rolls however were delicious, full of flavor and gorgeous. i recommend asking for one to be wrapped in cucumber it was very good. The desserts were also, like the appetizers just very pre made chain type of food. They were good desserts sure, just underwhelming and boring. I gotta say tho their whipped cream is strangely different and delicious! As for the service that was not good. There was a long wait of people but we had a reservation and got sat within 3 minutes. hostesses definitely were confused and could have used some help. The atmosphere is lovely and it's such a beautifully designed restaurant. It took around 15 minutes before we even got greeted by our server and he just kept going round to other tables after taking our order instead of immediately putting it into the computer. After her greeted us we ordered drinks and he came back without drinks asking for our appetizer order so we put that in and it came out 5 minutes later... we still had no drinks on our table and appetizers came out first... not great. food runners just brought everything out and no one ever really checked to ask if everything was good. took a long time to get appetizer olates removed and even longer to longer to get our servers attention to order rolls. eventually we ordered and it took 25+ minutes for food to come out. The rolls were good yes but we were over it by then. A century later after hunting someone down we were able to order dessert and again took a while to come out and took even longer to get the check. the server was nice but there was only like 2 servers on a Saturday night so i think if they had more servers the whole meal would have been great.

Service was great but definitely come if you want a normal portion size of meat for an adult. Jk…read more It was meant for rabbits. How do you serve an adult these little cubes of steak as a portion. Thought they messed up the order, guess I just messed up coming here instead of mizu.
