To be fair I am a Mexican food connoisseur. The rating is based solely on the food and not the atmosphere or waiting staff. I've been to Iowa twice and still have yet to find authentic Mexican food. The restaurant was pretty inside and a great location. Staff was pleasant and they really didn't keep me waiting. I'm from Arizona where there is a plethora of great Mexican food. I've had all types of Mexican food from Sonora to Mexico City. I ordered, "chili Colorado" a classic and simple dish that is common in Sonora and in southern Arizona. Off the bat I was skeptical because it should have been called carne con chile colorado. Chili is not a Spanish word. On the menu they also have Mexican pizza and Mexican wings which is another red flag. The food was bland from the salsa to the rice. It lacked flavor and spice. The "chili" was not authentic at all. Carne con chile should be made with dried hatch chiles that have been purred with other ingredients to create a savory thick sauce that you cook with thick tender cubed steak. My steak looked like it had been previously cooked and then microwaved with some runny red salsa sauce pored on it. The tortillas were the least from authentic. As soon as I opened up the foil I could smell that they were Taco Bell quality. My boyfriend ordered a simple quesadilla and bean burrito which they also drenched red sauce on. This food is so far from authentic. Please stop calling it authentic. It should be called Americanized or Tex Mex. I don't even think Tex Mex is fair to call it. Like I said I am picky when it comes to Mexican food. read more

Honestly? How is there this good of a Mexican restaurant in Ottumwa? Easily some of the best Mexican food I've ever had. Ordered the shrimp and steak dish, which was only $13.50. Steak was seasoned to perfection and tender. Shrimp were excellent. Veggies were crisp. And to top it off, service was exceptional. I'll be back for sure. read more

The Tequila Grill is by far the best Mexican place in Ottumwa and probably the best restaurant in Ottumwa! The food is fresh, the salsa is good, and the portions are huge! Have been here several times the food is always PHENOMENAL. What a great atmosphere! Having lived in Colorado for almost my whole life, I can say this is probably one of the best Mexican restaurants I have ever been to. The food is flavorful and the staff is always friendly and who can beat the prices?! Would recommend anything! All of the food is delicious. The chips and salsa are very fresh, and the cheese dip goes great on just about anything! The building is historic, make sure to look at the amazing woodwork in this amazing restaurant. The one downside of this wonderful restaurant is that the bathrooms could use a little TLC. read more
