By reviews this was one of the better restaurants in town. With a standard menu of Mexican items and a good variety of lunch combos, we were able to get what we wanted at a good value. There was no lunch time fajita option so I ordered the chicken breast with grilled veggies and tortillas on the side. The tender breast sliced easily: instant fajita. A chimichanga was fried to near perfection. Refried beans were satisfactory but the Spanish rice was dry. Our service was timely and efficient. The space here will accommodate groups. I lived in Los Angeles for 50 years, so I'm pretty familiar with Mexican food. I moved to Iowa six years ago, and Tequila Grill is my favorite Midwestern Mexican joint so far. Not what I expected from a Mexican restaurant in the heart of Mennonite/Amish country, where the roads don't have bike lanes, they have horse & buggy lanes. One of the charms of Tequila Grill is that every time we've dined there, there's been at least one Mennonite couple enjoying their south-of-the-border cuisine. The service has a welcoming feel to it, and the ambiance is that of a good, no-frills neighborhood eatery. I work on the road a lot and order food to go. I get that pictures of the menu from a while back may not reflect the actual price today, but double is ridiculous. I usually add a couple bucks to each item I order so I'm not shocked when I get there. Tonight I ordered $17 from the menu and was charged $34 when I got there. I understand inflation but this is bs. I'll have to admit that the price wasn't actually doubled. They doubled(charged me for two) my "$3" appetite order that was now $7( so $14 instead of $6). This happens far too often. If it didn't, I would let it go, but in reality, it's business owners taking advantage of their customers. It happens all of the time. Happened last week at a competing restaurant in this same town. For all of you servers who whine about poor tips and expect the customer to bridge the gap between your horrible job choice and what your employer pays you, consider this. If your boss didn't rob me, I'd probably leave a better tip. Needless to say, the food was subpar. Mexican quinine is probably the easiest thing to make. Terrible food...we arrived and had five people with us the seating was small couldn't fit five people in so we had to sit at another table and combined two tables together we couldn't sit face to face ordered food it came really fast I ordered steak tacos and the meat smelled off and tasted it I couldn't tell if it was good or bad kids ordered chicken tenders and fries chicken tenders smelled like dog food when kids tried it the breading tasted awful I don't know what they used for the breading but it was very disgusting and the chicken was bland and quite red I dont think they put seasoning in it the fries was undercooked so disgusting the little one had chicken tenders and rice for the substitute she didn't like the chicken tenders either so she just ate the rice my husband and daughter ate fajita quesadilla looked like a taco but was a bit bigger it didn't have that much stuff in it they gave us some vegetables with sour cream and guacamole to put in the quesadilla and some rice for the side portions were very small and finished quickly we talked with the waitress that served us and we paid at the cash register and left they even charged us 3.75 for the kids meal sides which was fries and rice and for the meal was 5.75 so expensive for a small portion and disgusting food and smells rotten never ever coming back if you want good Mexican food then don't come here turn around if you're planning to come here read more

Very friendly and helpful staff. This is a good place in a small town where choices are limited. However there just wasn't anything special or different. It was ok Mexican food. The margaritas were from a fountain so each one was not hand made. It tasted very processed and sugary. The tacos needed some kind of sauce, we should have gotten some extra salsa to go. The cheese sauce on my burrito was blah and the steak was tough. 3 stars for average basic food. read more

Where do I start? 7 minutes from my home and I've never been. Crazy! Restaurant looks like a house from the outside. Inside is kept clean. Woman's restroom is one room but very clean and large for a wheelchair. Dined this lunch hour on June 19th,2017. We were seated swiftly. Waiter took our drink order and chips and salsa arrived quickly. I ordered cheese sauce for my chips. Huge dish for only $4.00. Delicious. I ordered a lunch item. Steak with cheese and flour tortillas. Sooooo good! Rice and beans yummy too. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Kalona, Iowa. Inexpensive prices too. read more

Once you show me the full bottles of Tapatío at every table the game is done sir! All the other options were better than most "Mexican" restaurants you come across, they had the 2 Yucatán Habanero hot sauces as well as no Tabasco it Texas Pete or Louisiana "hot sauce" in sight!! I was slightly miffed that the Steak & eggs were so much more than their other huevos rancheros menu items. I know steak is more than chicken, but it was a little steep. In this case, you get what you pay for! The steak was cooked just as I had requested, rare, but not blue. Eggs were a little runny, but over medium isn't every cooks forte. Tequila Grill is now a staple of Kalona. They have incredible service with attentive waiters who are quick to refill drinks, chips, and salsa bowls, and are very friendly. If you're looking for an inexpensive and filling meal, Tequila Grill is 110% your place! I don't know how we survived in Kalona before it. Based on a recommendation from the lovely desk clerk and the Ottumwa Hotel, we gave this gem a try. And we were so glad because this place looks a little shuttered. But don't let that fool you because it can be packed inside. Nightly drink specials, cordial and welcoming wait staff and great food await you. Our service was friendly and efficient. The chips and salsa were warm and perfectly balanced in taste and heat. The quesadilla was huge and filled with generous amounts of meat, cheese and onions which made it juicy and melty. A steak taco was a delicious blend of tastes and was delicious. This is one of those places that was filled with people experiencing good company and delicious food. You can't improve on that. Five stars? Why so nice? Well, the refried beans were really good. I had shrimp tacos and they also were excellent. We were served chips and each of us got our own bowl of salsa. Double dipping! The restaurant was not busy mid afternoon and it was spotless. It was sort of strange eating a shrimp taco and watching Mennonite ladies and gentlemen driving their one horse buggies past the front window. I have eaten there a few times, the food is great, but the service fluctuates. Tonight was not it's best. It took about a half hour until we got service. The restaurant wasn't too busy, but there were people who got there completely after us and they got their food quickly and most importantly, before us. We arrived at 11:50 ish. Once we were seated, our orders weren't taken for about a half an hour. They weren't very busy, so I don't understand why they took so long. Once they took our orders, we waited 36 minutes before our food came. I got a chicken quesadilla, but the cheese was incredibly rubbery and tasted like cheese flavored melted plastic. Another relative of mine got a taco salad that she discovered wasn't meant for her only after she dug in. The waiters were constantly running around and the kitchen was extremely backed up. Came back here on a Friday night. Place only had one open table and we got it around 7 pm. In less than 10 minutes they had us a full bowl of nachos, salsa and our drinks. The server was prompt and had our food out to us while it was still sizzling and came back several times to check on us even though the place was full. Even though they where slammed they had the food on point and tasted great. Didn't have to wait on the check either as it was given to us at the perfect time. Even though we had everything on point, the bill was very reasonable as it was under $30 for me and the wife, and she had a adult beverage besides everything else we got.
