I gently suggested this and pretty constantly pointed out the deeper fish, yet he never gave a deeper line a chance. There we clearly not fish at 25' yet he kept most lines from 10-40'. I have no idea why, but we only caught a couple of fish, whereas I'm 100% convinced that we would have caught more and bigger at a lower depth. He said that the owner of the company was good at the large fish. If you can't do it, Ryan, then don't be a guide. Second, when we got back, he took 20+ minutes to load his boat before filleting the fish. He could have just filleted right away but wasted our time. I felt that my $400 was a waste other than some nice time on the Blue Mesa, and my 5 year old was disappointed. Overall a bust of a trip. And, this outfitter asks for a tip up front, which seems silly. I tipped 15% anyway, but I grudgingly did so given the low quality of the trip.

He's basically the Gandalf of the river (but with better sunscreen). From the moment we launched, Luke had our 4 member family crew paddling in sync, laughing through rapids, and absolutely hooked on the stories he told about the Royal Gorge. Luke dropped knowledge between Class III and IV waves like it was no big deal. What makes Luke awesome: Expert river skills - Maneuvers rapids smoother than a buttered otter. Royal Gorge history master - He knows the local lore and the geology. Entertaining as heck - We were laughing even when water was smacking us in the face. We felt totally safe, totally hyped, and totally soaked. Luke made sure we got the thrill, but also the story behind the scenery and that made the whole trip unforgettable. 27 years on the river, and it shows. Book Luke. You won't regret it.

The common area is really nice and cozy - couches, Netflix, books, etc - the bunkrooms & bathrooms are immaculately clean, and the prices are sooooo reasonable. After two nights in the bunkroom, I switched to the private room (once it became available), which was definitely worth it. The vibe during my staff was kind of "do your own thing", which was perfect. The outside areas were exactly what I needed - a ton of grass, some hammocks, etc. Location is great for Gunnison. We spent the few days walking around town, using computers at the local library, getting snacks at the supermarket, eating breakfast and dinner at local restaurants. Super walkable location. Very quiet and safe. Would 1000000000% recommend to anyone in the area!
