As surprising as it might seem to an outsider, Salinas has an adorable old town. Plagued as this…read moremodern farm town is with gang issues, they do have a few cute blocks of an old town. I took a break from driving down the 101 because of terrible traffic and found my way to old town. I went into Rooms In Bloom because I needed a nice Birthday gift for my Mother and this store seemed to have a very nice selection. This is right up her alley. I like a lot of the things too, but my style is a little more modern...and maybe funky? I got her a cute re-usable Lunch bag, and a tube of fancy scented hand cream, but I could have easily gotten a few more things like beautiful candles, a really nice tray, 3-wick candles, pajamas that were adorable, dishtowels, and more. If you're wondering, yes, my Mom is the sort of lady who loves to decorate her home, cook, and garden. It was hard to choose something on a budget, but the lady working was cute and nice and just let me browse without bothering me, but agreeing with me when I oohed- and-aahed over all the stuff. I also bought myself a couple of hair clips. I like stores that sort of divide their goods into themes or 'genres' and they do this here. I didn't have much time to browse the kids section, but they had a cute area of the store for children and babies. Perfect for shower shopping. Okay I think I said cute about 3 times in this review- do you get the point!? Also, it smells good!

READ THE LABEL. We collect wind chimes and art as we travel. When in Big Sur this past week, we…read morebought a medium sized bell windchime. It was a little pricy at $110, but we like to support local art. The attendant gave us a new one in the box, instead of one already hanging that we were looking at. When we got home to Arizona, I unpacked the item, and found a MADE IN CHINA TAG!!! They appear to buy cheap art from China, and mark it up. If you want to support local art, find another store.

I hated this place. It has nice things, but they are so expensive that it made me mad. Now, I…read moreexpected that things would be expensive, I mean it's a gift shop for tourists (i.e., things will be overpriced) and at Big Sur (i.e., an area where everything is overpriced). But if you look at something in this gift shop, and think about what would be an overpriced price for it, and then double that, then you'll almost be at the price for it. Like there was this tiny little jar of local salt that was about the size of a thimble, and I thought oh that's cute, maybe that would be a nice souvenier, and then it was either $17 or $19 when I looked at the price. I mean it was tiny!! I mean, it was the kind of thing that should be like $3, but I thought gift shop so probably $7 or $8, but no, more than double that. Things were crazy expensive, and the more I looked at things, the more it just pissed me off, and took away from the experience of even just looking at nice things without intention to buy. It made me want to leave the store. I've never had a feeling like that in any touristy gift shop I've ever been to in my life, not anywhere in the US including other coastal areas of CA, not overseas. It was also not friendly while you are browsing, nor welcoming when you walk in. I would not go here again, and I would not recommend it to friends.

The Steinbeck Museum was a wonderful literary stop in Salinas. We also visited the Steinbeck House…read moredown the street, which made the experience feel more complete. As a tribute to Steinbeck and his connection to the area, the museum was thoughtful, engaging, and well worth the visit. I especially enjoyed the quirky gift shop, always a bonus when a museum shop has personality. The drive into Salinas was also unexpectedly lovely, with so many fields and vegetables growing. It gave the whole visit a strong sense of place and helped connect the landscape to Steinbeck's writing. A great stop for literature lovers, history fans, or anyone looking for something meaningful to do in the area.

Unfortunately, reading his books wasn't part of my high school English curriculum; however, my interest in his works was rekindled by visiting this amazing facility! I spent at least a couple hours meandering through the exhibit, beginning with a short film telling the story of his life. It was fascinating to learn how John Steinbeck was both shaped by his hometown, and how much influence he had on the literary landscape during his lifetime. There is so much to look at and discover here! If you're a book nerd, whether a Steinbeck fan or novice like me, check this place out. Ticket prices are reasonable, and they offer discount for locals, veterans, and youth, or if you become a member. I can't wait to visit his childhood home next!
