PSA: You are not swimming alone in the lane, and need to be aware of where other swimmers are in the lane in relation to you.

Summer swim season 2019 is upon us. Please please please leave your ego and pride at home. If you are a new swimmer, new to this pool, a triathlete, someone who didn't grow up swimming, please take a minute to educate yourself on lap swim etiquette. Read the signs posted at the pool. Ask the guards and other swimmers. If a guard or other swimmer gives you a suggestion (kick boarding in the fast lane on a busy day...you should probably do this in the slow lane), please be receptive and understand that you are probably holding other swimmers up and or getting in the way. If a faster swimmer tries to pass you, do not consider this rude. Many new comers and triathletes consider this behavior rude, when in fact, we are just trying to pass you. Get a clue!! This past weekend was busy. Saturday 6/22: nine swimmers in one fast lane (seven is the limit). All swimmers knew and followed lap swim etiquette. No problems Sunday 6/23: seven people in fast lane, six of whom are constantly passing a slower swimmer. Slower swimmer refuses lifeguard and other swimmers' request to move a slower lane. Slower swimmer pushes off in front of other swimmers, causing other swimmers to "pile up" behind her. Please do not be this woman. As I wrote in my first review, leave hour pride and ego at home. Remember that you are not entitled to swim in one particular swimming lane, and that this is a space that is shared.

This team is great! I love swimming with the Temescal Masters. After discovering a love of open water swimming, I went to Temescal Aquatic Masters to hone my non-existent swimming technique. The coaches (and fellow swimmers) really pushed me to become the best swimmer I can be. They continue to do so on a nearly daily basis. Dues are cheap for what you get ($45 a month), and if you can't commit to a monthly fee, you can pay for a 5 (or 6) swim card that doesn't expire. You do not need to be a master of swimming to join! There are people of all levels and experiences. It is really a great place to make friends, have fun, and be fit! Oh, and aside from the great practices, team meets, and other events, there is a monthly beer night after practice. My kind of team! BTW, practices are evenings M-Th from 7-8pm, weekends from 8:45-10:15am, and morning (M,W & F) from 5:45-6:45am. The first practice is free, so there is no excuse to not check it out!

The locker room is filthy. Also although I am one of the faster swimmers, other swimmers are aggressive. Bad vibe there.

Tried to swim with this pool's swim team (Masters?), but then I found out I would have to pretty much swim for one hour straight.

Afterall, I live only a couple blocks away from Temescal Pool, why should I go all the way down to Mills to swim? Well, last August - after some pool princess put on flippers and decided that it was appropriate to swim UNDERNEATH other swimmers without checking in with them in advance of executing this plan and creating three near misses for head-on collisions and refusing to apologize ("I'm sorry if YOU were SCARED" instead of "Sorry - that was rude of me") - I went to Mills. It takes me 34 minutes to swim a mile at Mills - compared to 50-60 minutes at Temescal. Why, you may ask? TRAFFIC. The Temescal pool is always full of people - nobody is good about paying attention to pace in a lane and it's all circle swimming. Mills is pretty big, and I have never had to circle swim. People split the lanes - they get in, have their swim, get out. No sitting in the pool at the end of the lane chit chatting and blocking others from doing flip turns or any of this other nonsense you see at Temescal. If you're a serious fitness swimmer (vs social swimmer) - check out Mills. But - not too many of you - I don't want that place to get crowded! The downside of Mills is that they tend to move around the lap swimming schedule frequently and they are closed down for swim meets. The pool is also closed for two weeks in December (this year they closed several days earlier than advertised).

Fabulous - large, clean, not too expensive, and clear communication about hours, closures, etc.read more

They have good hours and the lifeguards at the front office are super helpful. The pool itself is a bit unusual - one end is quite shallow so it takes a bit of getting used to it for doing flip turns. There are always kids around - and quite often children's swim teams practicing. When I first started swimming there, I kept hear the name "Marco" being yelled repeatedly and thought "This must be the worst game of Marco-Polo ever!" I later found out it was that one guy on the kids' swim team who doesn't hear instructions and keeps swimming when everyone else is stopping. The hot tub is not bad - it's quite big. It's sadly full of people who all seem to want to talk OVER the noise of the jets. I can only imagine what it must be like for the people who live in the canyon all around and have to hear banal conversations, frequently alcohol fueled as there are many people with cans of beer in the hot tub, about personal relationships and compost bins. While parking is plentiful - there are plenty of people who block the road because they can't be bothered to park and walk 20 feet. There are even some rather entitled white male Tesla drivers who will criticize another person's driving despite the fact that they had no problems parking themselves (and the parking lines are many, worn down, and contradictory at best). There's definitely a bit of elitist element among the long time/regulars. Finally, the locker rooms are a horror. They are not kept clean and could do with re-tiling. The lockers are a mess. The toilets are miniscule and not much bigger than what you'd find in an airplane. I do confess that the source of my discontent was a visit to Villa Sport in San Jose last summer -- and the realization that for HALF the money, I could be getting way way more value. Let's not even get into the strange cash-only deposits and lack of policy to suspend membership when out of town or out of commission for long periods of time. It's a really great pool and club for families -- it's got picnic tables, grills, and you can bring the au pair as part of your membership. Two stars for single people without kids who prefer clean lockerooms - but five stars for families with lower standards and more money.

A staff member yelled out that they won't be allowing anyone in once they hit max capacity. Understood. We get inside. The staff members (more like immature teens) screamed at adults and kids when someone ran. While I understand the importance of safety, the way they were yelling at kids/adults to walk felt harsh and unprofessional. It created a tense and uncomfortable environment, especially when it could have been handled more calmly and respectfully. All the teenage lifeguards screamed in sync, literally all at once screaming at them to walk!!!!!!! It was like we were in bootcamp. Then, as the day went on, we still had an hour and a half left, someone had an accident in the pool (a child pooped), the lifeguards screamed at everyone to get out. While quick evacuation is understandable in that situation, the reaction was over-the-top. We all definitely came out right away. What made it worse was that the lifeguards were celebrating afterward saying "F*CK YES!!" And laughing and excited because they got to leave early since they had to close the pool. It felt beyond unprofessional and insensitive to the families who paid to be there. If these kids hate their job, please do us all a favor and quit your job. To top it off, we were all told to leave the premises entirely, even though many of us, including my family, still had children eating. It was abrupt and handled poorly, with no consideration for those trying to wrap up their visit responsibly, we even still had an hour and a half left. I hope management can provide better training on how to communicate with children in a way that is firm but respectful. It's important to keep everyone safe, but how it's done matters just as much. On top of that, if there's a scheduled large group, they should have a better approach rather than having families with small children wait outside in the heat outside.

Flashback to Summer 2002: I had a swim instructor named Benji, who was a Cantonese-American teacher. I don't know how long he was employed by the PIedmont Community Pool, and why my mother signed me up for private lessons with him, but Benji traumatized me. Among other things, he yanked my ankle, shoved me into the water, pushed me off the diving board, and threatened to throw me into the deep end of the pool. When I was crying in front of him, he verbally abused me, and I still remember him taunting me, "Oh, you gonna cry in front of me? Don't you dare cry in front of me!" While this all happened, other swimming instructors and staff were just walking by, didn't intervene, didn't scold Benji for his inappropriate behavior for terrorizing a 9-year-old, what the loving ****. When my therapist asked me how do I feel about swimming now as an adult, I just said, "I never want to come back to this pool ever again."
