Front desk staff was friendly and I was able to sign up for a 10 visit pass for $51, otherwise it's $6 a visit. I figured this will hopefully keep me consistent for the beginning of the year. The facility itself could use an upgrade but overall it is wat you would expect from an older building. The entrance into the pool is through the locker area which has lockers, changing area with benches, showers, and bathrooms. The pool looks fairly clean on the surface and we'll maintained. There are lanes divided into slow, fast, and medium speeds for circle swimming. Much of the demographics is 50+ during the time I went and they were all spaced out fairly evenly. The pool is actually open earlier for swim club members ($55/month) which is nice for early birds and the crowd seems younger at that time. I was told it's open to the public to sign up for that as well. The water itself was a good temperature. The pool goes from 3 ft to 9 ft. The bottom of the pool was clean on the 3 feet side, but had debris on the floor in the 9ft side. Folks would swim for about 30 minutes - 1 hour and more folks would flow into the lanes. Everyone is respectful and the regulars would chat with one another at the walls. There are kickboards and other supplies you can borrow from in a shed if you'd like. There is a lifeguard on duty. I asked her for the time, but she didn't know it, which I thought was odd because I could hear her talking on the phone or talking aloud. I asked another swimmer for the time and he said there's a clock right behind me, which I didn't see, and I'm surprised the lifeguard couldn't just tell me there was a clock to check. Apart from that, I enjoyed my one hour swim and got a reality check on how out of shape I am. I'll definitely come back to continue swimming and work my way up to the fast lane. On the regular you have to deal with the following:…read more-towels stolen when left on lounge chairs -belongings thrown off lounge chair and chair taken over while you're in the water -grown adults will get in the lane, won't notify you, begin swimming, crashing head on into you (a bit traumatizing and dangerous) -circle swim w/ 3 people: certain types of people are impatient and angry for whatever reason, demanding you hurry up and push off the wall, are too slow, or try other tactics to bully you out the lane. (I continue swimming at my own pace, refuse to leave the lane) -communal shower, low water pressure. -swimsuit spinner always out of order -the director who sends out weekly newsletters is pretty efficient and has been there for years after previous high turnover.

They got a punch card (10) passes for $64, not bad, if you want to swim for a day, they offer a 1 day pass for only $8 . Parking is free, just on the other side of the road but if you have a handicapped placard you can park near the vicinity. The pool is almost near the post entrance, it's just kinda tricky. I go by my Waze app and type the Trefethen Aquatic Center by Mills college.

They have good hours and the lifeguards at the front office are super helpful. The pool itself is a bit unusual - one end is quite shallow so it takes a bit of getting used to it for doing flip turns. There are always kids around - and quite often children's swim teams practicing. When I first started swimming there, I kept hear the name "Marco" being yelled repeatedly and thought "This must be the worst game of Marco-Polo ever!" I later found out it was that one guy on the kids' swim team who doesn't hear instructions and keeps swimming when everyone else is stopping. The hot tub is not bad - it's quite big. It's sadly full of people who all seem to want to talk OVER the noise of the jets. I can only imagine what it must be like for the people who live in the canyon all around and have to hear banal conversations, frequently alcohol fueled as there are many people with cans of beer in the hot tub, about personal relationships and compost bins. While parking is plentiful - there are plenty of people who block the road because they can't be bothered to park and walk 20 feet. There are even some rather entitled white male Tesla drivers who will criticize another person's driving despite the fact that they had no problems parking themselves (and the parking lines are many, worn down, and contradictory at best). There's definitely a bit of elitist element among the long time/regulars. Finally, the locker rooms are a horror. They are not kept clean and could do with re-tiling. The lockers are a mess. The toilets are miniscule and not much bigger than what you'd find in an airplane. I do confess that the source of my discontent was a visit to Villa Sport in San Jose last summer -- and the realization that for HALF the money, I could be getting way way more value. Let's not even get into the strange cash-only deposits and lack of policy to suspend membership when out of town or out of commission for long periods of time. It's a really great pool and club for families -- it's got picnic tables, grills, and you can bring the au pair as part of your membership. Two stars for single people without kids who prefer clean lockerooms - but five stars for families with lower standards and more money.

Sharing a lane is like a contact sport, and I just got fed up with it. Also, the water fitness program has basically dissolved - very few classes with poor instruction.

Well, some of the people thought I was lost and wondered why would a Chinese woman attend a picnic which was predominantly African-American. I mentioned who invited me and that I was also a 6th grade classmate to a guy (CO'70) who was on their football team. Thereafter, it was cool. (Hey, I am friendly, I don't bite even though I am a Lady Bulldog from Tech. I got a few laughs.) DeFremery Recreation Center is a Victorian style building in DeFremery Park, which is located in the heart of West Oakland on 16th & Adeline. It is a very spacious park (9.5 acres) with plenty of picnic areas, shade trees and a swimming pool. Other features include tennis courts, basketball courts, softball field and a skate park. The center itself offers a variety of activities (cultural, educational and recreational) to teens and youths. They also have African-American dance programs and day camp during the summer. Although there was another event in Oakland's Dimond District (Oaktoberfest) occurring at the same time, my husband and I could not be at two different venues at the same time. Since I don't drink beers, ales, brews, etc., we decided to head over to Defremery for a cultural festival. Purpose of my visit: The Oakland Black Cowboys Association held its 42nd annual parade and festival. We arrived late and missed the parade. However, we lucked out and found street parking next to the park. There was no driving around the blocks to find parking. I later found out somewhere in the park there was a parking lot. The park was filled with a few food and clothing vendors, information booths from different organizations and my favorite - the American Black Beauty Doll Artists. The organizer of the Festival of Black Dolls Show and Sale gave me the 411 as to when to look forward to the event. Stage was also set up for music and live entertainment. Eats: Oxtail with red beans & rice, greens and cornbread. For $12, the portion was generous and quite filling. The meal was enough to feed two people. Purchase: two cowboy hats and two T-shirts from the Oakland Black Cowboys Association. Fun time for families with children. I know one thing, my husband and I will mark the calendar on the first Saturday of October for a visit to DeFremery Park.

The facility was great! The bathrooms were clean and well maintained and the area was is great condition. I would recommend that you consider "preparing" your food in advance, as the grill really isn't big enough to accomodate 150 people. However, the large field is great for spreading out, kite flying, tossing the old football, or maybe hosting a wedding, birthday, quincinera, bar/bat mitzvah or a christing... so many options and such a great location. Convenient to all of the East Bay and Contra Costa also.

Dedicated parking lot is nice and acts as a good buffer from the street. Play structures are clean and aren't the type that just looks nice as art pieces but can't be played on. These are legit. Basketball court and baseball diamond adjacent to the recreation center. I was more focused on the play structures though which was nice. Soft surface - not sand and mulch like you see at other places. The row of trees and fences are a good demarcation of the perimeter of the play structure. There were only two people there when I attended. One was playing basketball on his own. The other was riding a skateboard whom I accidentally almost ran into, but he was cool about it and laughed it off.
