I moved into the east Bay from SF several months ago, and began searching for a swimming pool to replace Koret's university pool, where I've been going forever. I could not find affordable public pools near Castro Valley, so decided to try Berkeley. My search ended when I found King Pool on Hopkins in n. Berkeley. I love outdoor pools! Swimming in sunlight through beams of light in the water makes me happy. When I swim backstroke, I feel the sun's warmth on my face and see the sun's shining orb hanging above the trees. It's great. King Pool serves families as a neighborhood pool, primarily. You sense this vibe immediately by the murals outside, by the signs and announcements, by the office's lived in appearance. You feel like you've walked into a family's garage or game room, complete with quiet, doe eyed teenagers at the register, life guarding, hanging around. All of these observations add a comfortable, welcoming vibe to the place that made me like it. I knew I'd found my e. bay pool from the first few moments walking in. The water is clean and clear. The pool measures 25 yards in length, with 5 lanes cordoned off for lap swimming. Children can enjoy their own shallow area adjacent to the lap lanes. A separate square diving pool exists for those who want to practice their cannonballs. . Kick boards and pull buoys are provided. I've swum twice now at 11am, and have not had to share lanes with more than 1 swimmer. $6/swim is their price. King Pool also offers swimming classes, water aerobics, and Masters training sessions. Kids had lots of fun, the baby included. Great atmosphere. Bathrooms not being open on weekends was the only negative.

Albany Aquatics Center - Outdoor pool!

Albany Aquatics Center

Wow, coming back to Albany Aquatics Center for kiddo swim lessons is full circle. Back in the day I…read moreswam here for swim meets in high school and now coming back, such a cool moment to be with the family. They offer Tot Swim (including on Sundays) which is honestly such a fun addition. We called ahead of time with a bunch of questions as newbies and inquired about walk-ins. We received answers to everything we needed to be set up with success for our first swim. There's also a super cool vending machine by the bathrooms/showers/changing areas that offers nutritious pre and post snacks, goggles, sunscreen, and I think swim caps too. The indoor pool is super spacious and everyone was respectful (of lanes, hehe). You're able to utilize pool accessories during the swim hours and there's lifeguards on duty with a stop watch to let you know when Tot time is over. We had around an hour and 15 or so. There's an awesome grass area and epic park next door. Parking is accessible in front of center. Can't wait to return! Definitely check the swim calendar online before heading over.

My son is currently enrolled in swim classes here. The instructions & expectations are clear. At…read morethe end of each session we had to be a bit persistent in obtaining a report card, but upon receipt, it's very detailed on what he needs to work on and what he did well. We will continue to enroll him here, especially since they also have an indoor pool for Fall & Winter sessions.

El Cerrito Swim Center is the only pool I swam at when I lived in the East Bay (2015-2019). I came…read morefor lap swimming and greatly appreciated that the pool was open year round. A seasonal schedule was posted online which made it easy to check when lap swim hours were and adjust my work schedule accordingly. If I was really ambitious I would get a swim in during my lunch hour. I found midday lap swims to be the least busy, especially during non-summer months. The evening lap swims could get a bit packed and showers could get crowded when trying to shower before getting in the pool due to a high volume of youths showering after swim team practice. Lap swim while water aerobics is going on is quite the treat. A few lanes were dedicated to water aerobics and other lanes would be open for lap swim. Music played during the water aerobics class, which made my kick sets enjoyable getting to listen to music and swim. I paid per lap swim which is the more expensive option. There is also a pass option where the pass is good for a certain number of lap swims or certain number of days and you pay in advance for the set number of swims or days. They had these passes for lap swim, water aerobics, the masters swim team, and recreation swim. For lap swim the passes were for 10 swims, 30 days, and 90 days. The price range for these lap swim passes spanned roughly $50 to over $300. Something to keep in mind when budgeting if you also have and/or want a gym membership. Facilities were clean and the lifeguards kind and helpful. Kickboards and pull buoys were provided on deck. The pool entrance and usage fees were well marked and payment for each swim was simple and straightforward.

The wait is about 30 minutes on a weekend. The waitlist wasn't very long. But the staff was nice…read moreand help. Answered all my questions. Assisted with getting my baby a life jacket.

West Campus Pool - The main pool during lap swim hours

I wanted to find a local pool option to rotate in some lap swimming to my fitness routine. You…read morepre-buy a pass that can be used at both this location and the king location. Passes are $6 and have no set time or date. There are some discounts for a 10 pack or monthly access. You file a photo when registering so no ID needed at the pool. You enter through the "locker room" which has showers and toilets and is overall pretty bare bones. If you want to lock items there are some lockers by the pool but bring your own lock. Also interior bike parking so this seems like a plus! Lap lanes were busy and some classes were going on but overall this met my needs. No concession stand but some picnic tables so you can bring snacks.

So many things to like about this pool…read more First and foremost, for me, is that it is WARM. It's the warmest pool around and it makes all the difference. It's easier to swim longer. Those several degrees are the difference between blue fingers and NOT blue fingers. The staff is great. I like the ease of buying a pass online. The price is right. AND, I am happy to say, that they still require masks unless in the pool or shower! I approve. Safety first! (Although the staff isn't consistent with masking.) My kids are grown, but I do appreciate the family friendly nature of the pool. It's always great to see parents and kids ... and I love seeing budding young swimmers doing laps. For those of you who like a cooler pool, I highly recommend the Emeryville Aquatic Center on San Pablo and 45th. It's also a very nice pool. Great staff. Was my go to for years ... BUT, I gotta say, I'm now addicted to the extra heat of West Campus Pool. I also hear the Pool on Hopkins, behind MLK Middle School ... identical lay out ... is cooler. SO, for those of you who like a chillier pool temp ... please go to the other pools and save the lanes at West Campus for us heat seekers.
