Tejas is the best yoga place I've ever encountered. This studio is unique in its own way. Everyone was so welcoming, I took my first class a couple of weeks ago and the instructors along with the students were very welcoming. Every time I walked into this studio, I felt good energy all around. Instructors dedicate their moves to breathing and meditating. I really appreciate the emphasis on the breathing and really helping the students with seeking a path. They also have a pay it forward program and if students can not afford yoga sessions, they will work something out with them. Tejas yoga definitely focuses on the traditional yoga. On some Sundays, the community is offered a free yoga class usually in the evening! Definitely a great way to try out a class to feel out this studio. read more

I have belonged to this studio for many years and I enjoy all the classes here. All the instructors are extremely experienced and friendly. I think this is the best yoga studio in Chicagoland. read more

Tejas yoga is the best. The instructors Jim and James are fantastic. I have been practicing yoga with them for 20 years. I have followed them around for many different locations wherever they moved to. I will continue to be one of their students. read more

It's work in progress @ the new 1345 south Michigan Ave location but the positive vibes are very much present. So happy about the prime location close to home. A little disappointed the community class is on Thursday instead of Sunday but hopefully will change down the road. Love attending all the classes here!!! read more

Each class at Tejas is energizing yet totally calming, and there's always something new to learn. Jim and James are highly attentive and intuitive teacher who adapts every pose to work for everyone in the room. And at Tejas what an inspiring, welcoming space to practise in. Stephanie read more

This is a REAL yoga studio! I've always taken yoga at dance studios or in a university setting, but this experience was different and lovely. The space is clean, well appointed, and very zen feeling. There's water and tea available and the studios are equipped with all the accessories you'll need: blocks, straps, blankets, and bolsters. There are no mirrors and no music, so you can truly focus inward instead of comparing yourself to everyone else in the mirror or getting distracted by the music. I took the Restorative class with Paul and recommend it as a MUST for anyone who is stressed out or needing to gently stretch and reconnect with themselves. But there are a vast variety of other classes I can't wait to try (all of which are well described on their website). Definitely a gem in the South Loop. Go check it out. read more

Tejas Yoga is the real deal! Beyond a clean, great looking studio - the yoga being taught here is fantastic. I am a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitor who has had lower back issues in the past and this is the place I go to rehabilitate and strengthen my body from the abuse. More specifically, Jim Bennitt is legendary yogi who's classes should not be missed. There isn't another place in the Chicago I'd recommend over Tejas Yoga. Enjoy! read more

Tejas Yoga - Yoga Near Me

I found my way to Tejas after searching for a yoga studio that offered something other than hot yoga. Tejas turned out to be one of the few places in the city that offers unheated classes. I checked out the website and decided to sign up for the 30 day intro series. I stopped in one day after work and was greeted by a lovely gentleman who introduced himself as James. He had a calming presence which felt perfect for yoga. I told him I wanted to sign up for the intro class and we spoke briefly about the classes Tejas offered. I found James warm and affable. Being in the studio felt comfortable right away so I had no apprehension about signing up. I convinced my sister to sign up for the class too so we went together and took our first class with James. I wasn't sure what to expect but I went in with an open minded and was excited to learn. It was challenging, learning something new, but I kept up easily as James took his time explaining everything throughly. I left the first class feeling relaxed and invigorated. The next 3 classes I attended were lead by Jessica. I liked Jess immediately... she's got one of those personalities that draws you in. She was positive and extremely upbeat. She took the time to speak with everyone individually before every class and always remembered people's names which I found endearing. Her love for yoga was evident in the way she taught. She was gentle, calm and has that thing that makes you feel like you could be her bestie. The intro series consists of 5 weekly classes over the course of a month. By the end of the fourth class I'd decided that yoga wasn't for me so I didn't bother going to the fifth class. The class times are varied so it's easy to find something that fits your schedule. Each class is paced slowly so that everyone can keep up and gain from the experience. The studio space is generously sized given its location and the prices seemed to be average for the city. It's well lit, secure, clean and comfy temperature wise. The online class registration is easy and convenient too. Yoga turned out to be something I didn't particularly enjoy as a practice but the overall experience Tejas provided was top notch! I highly recommend them. read more

I'm writing this from LA, after living in all major US cities, I believe Chicago has the best yoga studios. I lived in Chicago more than a decade ago and still think about those classes and teachers. Tejas had a lasting impression, I think I only went there once, and have since come back to the online offerings. I am raving about the online platform because as a parent in this mess of a year I have totally lost all time for any intentional physical movement, and these online videos have brought me back! You have access to so many recordings and there's a live stream, it's all I have been looking for. Thank you so very much Tejas, brilliant platform! read more

I went to one yoga class here with Jim Bennitt. The location is really easy to get to via public transit (not sure about parking). The space is nice and open, although you do need to leave to use the bathroom in another part of the building. They have a changing room with lockers, but the lockers are really small and couldn't even fit my purse. Overall, I enjoyed the class and the sequence. I like how the class moves slowly, and builds in intensity. The room was warm enough, but NOT hot yoga. My main issue was this sense of elitism that I felt from the teacher and students. One of the students confronted me and told me to turn my phone off (even though it was off already and put away in my purse). The teacher also tried to tell me exactly where I should sit when I was signing on the new student form, and began the class telling the students what to do while drinking coffee (or tea?). Perhaps it's because I'm young, but I felt very talked down to during my experience at Tejas which didn't make me feel welcome there. Unsure if I'll be coming back, but also props for a good class and sequence. read more

This is what I consider "real" yoga. There are no gimmicks at Tejas. The focus is on clear instruction and guidance on breath work and form. If you are new to yoga this is a great studio to start your practice. The basic and moderate classes are easy to follow while providing a great workout. If you are more advanced in your practice you will find the vigorous classes challenging. Advanced poses are broken down into steps so you can work your way up to them. Jim and James are patient, thorough and often have the class laughing. I love that there is an emphasis on the philosophy, breath work and meditation in the classes at Tejas. I think I walk away from every class feeling like I've learned something new about yoga. They also brew this magic herbal tea that you can sip after class. I need to find out where to buy this stuff because I get cravings. The real testament to the classes at Tejas: I got home recently after a vigorous class and my boyfriend was feeling mischievous, and started picking on me and otherwise tormenting me. Usually this kind of behavior will end up in me yelling at him "NO ME MOLESTA!!" But that day I barely noticed because I was so blissed out. He commented that maybe he should try yoga if I could ignore him like that. He's in luck, because Tejas has a special class just for men. I am working to convince the boyfriend that he needs to go, if anything to tell me how it is. They don't let ladies in there. Practicing at Tejas has been a joyful learning experience. I know that this studio is a place where I will deepen my practice and my understanding of yoga. read more

Tejas is my favorite place for yoga in the south loop. It is a small, intimate studio where you instantly feel right at home. The instructors know a lot about yoga and the different techniques, and they make an effort to really improve your practice. There's only one studio, and it can get pretty packed at peak hours. Mid-day classes are usually pretty empty, so I'd definitely recommend trying to go at lunch. The prices here are very affordable for yoga classes, and they also offer discounts for students and people that work in the area. read more

A rainy saturday morning visit brought us into this very tight knit studio and allowed us to bump up against its community. We arrived on the doorstep wet, and early (as is my want when practicing in a new studio) and were met by a very sweet female staff member who got us checked in and registered for a gentle 8AM class. I'd hope to take a more challenging class initially, but as I was with another yogi, we opted for the gentler class. Regardless, I was grateful for the opportunity to get on my mat, and enjoyed the studios ambiance prior to getting started. They have a Yelp special that makes it easy to take a first class too. $5 for your first class which includes your mat. There are two studios and though initially we thought we'd be practicing in the larger, we ended up in the smaller studio due to some filming being done that morning. Neither studio had mirrors so visual inspections of alignments were not possible. Better to be present and aware of the body itself I suppose. Adam was our guide for the 90 minute session and we were given cards at the beginning of class that we were instructed to use to signal our willingness for adjustments. We were guided through a short chanting / meditative discussion before focusing on breath work and postures. A good 60-70 minute flow started and then we wrapped up with a bit more meditation before being released to our day. The close kit feel of the class I attended was warm and open as was the studio and it's staff. Definitely a studio I'd visit again when in Chicago and one of the highlights of my rainy Saturday visit. read more

I highly recommend this place! The teachers are amazing and the studio is beautifully designed. The south loop is in need of an authentic yoga studio and you can find that with Tejas Yoga. It is conveniently located near tons of transportation and tons of great places to get lunch or dinner after an amazing yoga experience. I am a huge fan of Jim Bennitt wherever he is, but being able to take classes from him in his own studio is amazing. Jim and James own this place and they have put such thought into finding the space and setting it all up. This is a great place to unwind and take amazing yoga classes from amazing teachers. It is worth the trip to the South Loop if you don't live nearby and if you live in the neighborhood you must go!! read more

Tejas, I love you. Not only have you brought a beautiful, warm, and tranquil space to the South Loop, but your practice also offers students a chance to stretch themselves both physically and mentally. I'm a Kripalu student and have found too many studios tend to focus only on the physical exertion -- that's great, but I actually don't want to feel like I'm at the gym with a bunch of hypercompetitive fitness fiends when I take a yoga class. I want a quiet space to open up and push the limits of my muscles while my mind enters that blissed-out state that yoga offers. I know, sounds cheesey, but it works. Tejas seems like they get that, and their class was everything I've been missing since I moved away from my old studio. I took my first class with Erin and I loved, loved, loved it. If you've had a year or two of practice, the moderate class may be your style. Get in there before everyone discovers this place! read more

Tejas is like fine wine ... it gets better with age! They recently moved into a larger space that is bright and spacious. With more classes being offered and the addition of excellent yoga teachers, who teach intelligently from their heart, there are no worries about competitiveness, injury or lack of community. Check out this unique yoga studio to get your mojo balanced. Clicking my heels 3 times, as did Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, I once again found my way home. read more

Not sure where all the 5 stars are coming from. Its not terrible..but not 5 star worthy either. First of all, the space is tiny and your mat is literally 3 inches away from your neighbors. Not cool when you're all sweaty and trying to concentrate on breathing and movement. Second of all, be prepared to lay still for at least 20 minutes! This class could easily be an hour long without this time which is supposed to be to relax. However, it's really hard to relax because it's dead silent so you hear everyone around you breathing, snoring (yes at least 3 people always fall asleep during the last part and start snoring LOUDLY) and you also hear the elevator going up and down, people opening and closing doors, footsteps up and down the stairs..ugh you get the idea. My suggestion would be to play some type of Zen music during this time to give us something to focus on to help block the other distracting sounds that are amplified with the "silence". Its location is pretty convenient though, right off the Red line Roosevelt stop. The instructors seem very knowledgeable and are really nice, its just the format of the class itself that turns me off. read more

I'm very new to yoga, so I am no expert by any stretch of the imagination. But I decided to check out Tejas because it is one of the few yoga studios closeby to us south siders. The space is small, but beautiful. I took a "basics" class with Jim. The class was small, so there was a ton of personal attention. At first the small class size intimidated me because there was no way I could hide in the back of the room, but it ended up being a great experience. I felt totally comfortable and I got all the help I needed on the more challenging aspects of the session. There is a major focus on breath work and meditation here, so be prepared to sit still for 20-30minutes! The meditation was a new (and challenging) experience for me, but I do think it is worth while. I walked away from the class feeling refreshed and more aware of what was going on with my body. All in all, I highly recommend Tejas! read more

While visiting, I took classes with Paul, Zack, and Jim. This is a top-notch studio with some seriously amazing instructors. Everyone here is friendly and warm and the atmosphere is relaxed and tranquil. The open class was a refreshing way to start my morning, and the gentle and restorative classes were the perfect way to relax in the evenings. I will certainly be back for future visits to Chicago, and if I lived nearby this would absolutely be my home studio. Try it out and enjoy! read more

If my review were a pose it would be the "Fivestarasana". Like many here, I took the intro course and it was a perfect entry into the practice. Amazingly, our instructor James (also one of the owners) threaded the needle to give those with no experience and those with a few yoga classes in our past an even playing field. He demonstrated poses and showed variations for more or less challenge depending on your comfort or physical limitations. James injected a great blend of down-to-earth humor along with some background into some of the moves / poses we did. I had a back injury and he showed variations that kept my back in check. In fact, the class probably helped my back heal sooner. The class was something I looked forward to all week. My mind was calmed and some of the poses I did surprised me. I felt centered and strong. I want more. However, if you're afraid of commitment and want a one-time shot, take the restorative class. After the intro course I find myself watching yoga on youtube and trying to figure out how I can work sun salutations into my day. I'm looking to take the Foundation Series and want to know more. As for the facility itself, it's a clean relaxing environment perfect for yoga. The intro course includes mats and props which is a bonus. Reasonable rates and great location. Namaste! read more

I am recovering from a bulged disc and took the gentle class on Friday at 6p. I feel better the day after then I have in a while! This studio is steps from the red line. It's a few doors down from Trader Joe's, restaurants or get back on the train and head to meet friend in a different neighborhood. The studio is designed so it's very welcoming and relaxing. I'm not much of a yogi and I don't do yoga very often but this place and the instructor (Jim) have inspired me! I've been doing yoga for years but never regularly and consider myself a beginner, I always feel comfortable in Jim's classes, he's very patient with me and helps me at my level yet at the same time I can see the advanced members in the class are very challenged. Tejas offers several classes to fit in your schedule from early morning, mid-day and evening. My schudele can change all the time so it's nice to have several options. read more

I have been to Tejas Yoga several times and each time I have had a wonderful, special experience. I took my very first official yoga class here as part of the Intro to Yoga month long session. The atmosphere is relaxing and not at all intimidating for the beginner. The staff is friendly and helpful. I honestly could not have asked for a more positive introduction to the practice. I have also taken a workshop here, which I found informative and interesting. All instructors I've dealt with here are engaging, knowledgeable, and accessible. I cannot recommend Tejas highly enough and from all the other smiling faces in the room, I know I am not alone. read more

I started my yoga practice about 14 months ago. After bumping around to different studios I found Tejas. SOOO happy that I did!!! Jim and James are both excellent instructors and have helped me so much over the last year. Every class is as calming or challenging as I need it to be for that day. I always walk out of class feeling like my whole day has been improved by spending 90 minutes with these two guys.... Thanks so much for providing me with Tejas.. read more

Took my first class here the other night... The space is far too small. It's not enjoyable nor effective yoga practice to have your neighbors so close and all up in your area to where you can't fully embrace and practice the pose. Secondly, the class scheduling/availability is not great. There should be a few later classes offered throughtout the week in my opinion, such as 7pm. Sometimes with commute time, it's difficult to make a 6pm class during rush hour. Case in point: the instructor was late. We sat waiting for her to arrive, about 10-15 minutes I'd guess.... this was awkward. Also, I am not really a fan of the area in general- the Roosevelt redline is not my fave. I hope that I can take some more classes and that Tejas will change my mind... read more

Despite my youth and young adult training as a dancer, I am not flexible. At one point I was able to do the splits all around, but I was 12. That's not happening now in my early 30s, but I sure would like to be more flexible! I'd also like to be more relaxed and hop on this yoga life style craze. I've taken some of the free classes at Lululemon, but am always intimidated. Tejas offers a wonderful introduction to yoga class. I wasn't intimidated or looking to help from the other participants. I relaxed and focused on me (isn't that what yoga is about anyway? Not who's wearing the cutest outfit, though I do like the gear that comes with it.) The instructor explained various forms of breathing, the reason behind different poses and their benefits. After my 90 minute class I felt utterly at ease and excited for my next class. As I'm not a yogi, I can't say this studio would be right for everyone. The space is small, but zen. The staff is friendly, and the location just north of the Wabash/Roosevelt intersection is ideal. For a neophyte like me, Tejas felt just right. read more

I was new-ish to yoga when I started a month ago, so I am not going to write a review that paints me as having had some kind of transformation. But I can't say enough good things about this place. After the first two classes, I just started to notice small things in my day to day life that I could change like the way I sit on my bike when I ride, or standing tall and keeping my shoulders back when I walk. Small things that make a big difference. It's not rocket science but sometimes you just need an atmosphere with guidance to help you bring it all back home. I love Zach's class! read more

Tejas is great. I've had some amazing teachers here (Jim and James are both excellent), and some simply wonderful overall experiences. Jim really pushes you, and pushes you hard to be better each time. I love that they offer such a variety in terms of levels, styles, and times. As a 9-5'er, I really appreciate when studios have flexible schedules. The only thing that knocks off points in my book is how crowded some classes get! I went to a few classes after work on weekdays and was inches away from people on every side. Not the most relaxing atmosphere for a yoga class, and makes it really hard for me to concentrate. It might have been due to the groupon, but hopefully they can "cap" the class at a certain number to avoid over-crowding. read more

One of the most amazing yoga experiences!! My friend and I got a groupon and thought we would try this place out based on its amazing reviews-boy does it deliver! The facility is super cute and cozy. The front desk lady was so sweet and helpful! They also have tea available for students before and after class; as well as chocolate covered sunflower seeds! YUM! The yoga class I went to was "Open" instructed by James. It was phenomenal!! Challenging yet enjoyable. I really felt my body open up- trust me, I am not a regular yogi! As an ultra endurance athlete, in 2012 I sought out yoga on the recommendation of a massage therapist. I found Tejas because it was close to where I lived and it had an intro to yoga class. That class and the bright instructors and practitioners at Tejas ended up being one of the best things that ever happened to me. The people I've met, the principles I've learned and the peace I have found continue to shine bright in me today. For me, yoga serves as a grounding activity, something that helps me connect to my breath and find peace in my body -- a body that takes a lot of punishment in my athletic adventures. Tejas has helped me cultivate that practice to not only heal my body, but to also make me a better person. Tejas is a family and I'm glad to be a part of that family. read more

Let me start off by saying this was my first time ever participating in the study of Yoga. If you are a beginner like myself Tejas Yoga is the only place you should consider. I was very nervous going into my first session but was immediately helped to feel as if I've done yoga millions of times. My introduction instructor was James he is extremely helpful and also allows you to email him if you have any other questions outside of the studio! Not only does James do a great job but there are also student instructors whom excel at helping each and every person in the dojo while keeping you motivated to try harder. If you're in Chicago and want to do yoga give Tejas a try you will not regret it! read more

I've taken different types of yoga classes at different studios all over Chicago and the suburbs. Tejas is the only place that has made me fall in LOVE with yoga. Its the only place that has really made me want to practice (even outside of the studio) and work to nail a new pose or handstand (almost there...). Its serious and fun at the same time. I started with a couple foundational classes with Emily and she was fantastic. James is so great, I haven't even tried any of the other instructors. Teja's has been a life saver over the last year as I job hunted in NY. Really helped me deal with the stress and uncertainty that comes with contemplating a cross country move. Now that the time as come to actually move... Teja's is one of the top things I'm going to miss in Chicago. Thanks guys!! read more

I was in Chicago for business in March and had a grueling work day. I woke up super tense and fatigued so I figured that I needed a good stretch. I looked up the schedule and headed over. I am a former modern dancer so to say the least I am pretty picky about the classes I take. I was happy with everything... the studio space, shop, the teacher and my fellow classmates and it was so easy to follow along. By the end of the class I was all smiles, my heart center was open, I felt limber and stretched. Will be back in class whenever I can. read more

Tejas is my first yoga studio, and I took the Intro to Yoga classes with Zach last year. They design it where you can keep taking the classes until you are ready for "regular" classes. I just went to the 4 sessions, then "graduated" to foundational and gentle classes. All of the instructors are great. There is no intimidation at all, especially for someone new to yoga as I am. It is a nice and peaceful place in the South Loop. read more

I've been going to Tejas for about a year now and it's been great. Even better, they recently moved to an expanded studio and now offer a greater range of class times. Probably the thing i like the best is the variety of classes. Each instructor has their own style which keeps classes fresh and interesting. Also, as a guy, i appreciate the number of male instructors they have. I think this helps them provide good alternates or preparations for some of the deeper poses that aren't always accessable to the semi-regular yogi. read more

My husband and I took the intro to yoga series with instructor Mia Park and it was absolutely fantastic. My husband is new to yoga while I am a bit more experienced, but he didn't want to go alone - you know how some guys are - and I was amazed at how relevant getting back to the basics was. Mia took the time to adjust several of my poses that elevated the level of challenge for me and, even though the classes were quite full, she did the same for everyone, offering quiet suggestions and small adjustments so that each student was getting the most out of their practice. The space is very nice and the energy is calm and soothing, even though you can sometimes hear through the walls, if you allow yourself to relax they are not a distraction. I especially love how there seems to be equal focus on the physical as well as the spiritual and mental aspects of a yoga practice. It's not just a physical work out, it's a place to quiet your mind and listen to your breath which I think is just as important as the physicality of it all. I would definitely recommend both Tejas and Mia Park and will definitely be going back. read more
