My '97 wrangler's frame was rotting out in the usual places (rear quarters). I drove up to have these guys save my Jeep. They were able to work with me on a tight deadline. I really appreciated the walkthrough of the shop after I came to pick it up. Got a rough estimate of $3k. They called later that day and also emailed a copy of the estimate and changed the estimate to roughly $8k. I told them to put it outside, for that price or a little more I could have the whole frame replaced.at that point they started to negotiate the charges. I supplied a OEM Toyota rear crossmember and brackets, they tried to charge me for an addl crossmember. Then they tried to charge 6 hrs labor to weld 2 new body mount brackets the size of my hand onto new metal which is about 5 hours over actual time. They also claimed that the front rails were rotted. After some discussion, the estimate dropped to $4300.00. They said it would be weeks for the repair as i did not have an appt to repair the vehicle (which i did ) vs estimate. All I asked was that the repairs be completed by Aug 13th as I was having surgery on the 14th and i could not drive for awhile after. I live 98 miles away from their shop. Emailed the week of 10th-14th and they said it would be ready the 17th. When it wasnt ready then, it was pushed a week to a week and a half later for completion. During this timeframe they sandblasted the front rails by mistake and the shop said they would repair the front rails at no charge. Also the new rear rails are drilled for a hitch but there are no welded nuts for the bolts to mount the hitch. They wanted to use SAE nuts because its what they have instead of metric which is supposed to be there. I emailed on Sept 2nd checking status and got a date of Sept 4th with a final bill of $4566.89. I was never told about any increases and we had an agreed amount of $4300.00. When i messaged on this issue they responded that they would honor the $4300.00. So we drove to their shop on the 5th to pick up the vehicle and they left it with a dead battery, alot of the engine was covered in sandblasting media, there is undercoating residue on the drivers leather seat from their clothing, the entire underneath of the vehicle is covered in undercoat including the "plastic and rubber liners", all brake hoses and rubber bushings, they left some residue on the exhaust, undercoating over roughly $2k worth of recent Bilstein shocks, struts and coils. I now have to scrape all the oversprayed undercoat, i have to have the drivers seat bottom replaced because the undercoating will not come off without damaging the leather and color and the smell inside the SUV was overwhelming from the undercoating. I had to have the vehicle towed home(thank you AAA). They left an invoice on the front seat for me to sign for the $8k estimate and leave it. I overwrote it for the $4300 that was agreed upon and left it. On Sept 8th, I received an email asking me to sign the $8k estimate again. I replied " I will gladly sign a receipt for the $4300 that was agreed upon and not the $8k price. I also let them know the issues that I had with the vehicle, I never heard from them again. Attention to detail is severely lacking. I still have not been able to check their work underneath due to the surgery but I will update if there is more to report

Imagine, if you will, a light saber. Now shrink it, focus it, and make it a precision handheld device. Congratulations - in your mind's eye, you're now wielding a plasma cutter, which is a real tool you can learn to use and put to effective metal-working use after a workshop here - I did just that during a Weekend Welding Workshop and it was tough to wipe the grin off my face for quite a long time. While that might make for some of the coolest visual imagery to describe, the fact that metal grinders, MiG welders, age-old anvils, fine-gauge jewelry-making tools, ceramic works, and myriad other tools of the trade are waiting to be discovered and shared here is a great impetus to get people excited about the art and science of metal-working. The Yard recognized that and has worked hard over the years to forge the foundation, expand the awareness base, and reach out to the community - all experience levels, age ranges, and walks of life. The events here are a super draw for my family and me. The Halloween Iron Pour. The Ultimate Chef competition. The Steel Yard Cruise Night Car Show. I hear there have also been weddings here...which goes to show you don't need to be actively working metal to enjoy the Yard. That said, seeing some of the custom-chopped and augmented vehicles done on-site doesn't hurt one's appetite to grab some leathers and a visor, and get working. I received a request for donation to the Yard's efforts at the end of 2012 that moved to me action in a way that words hadn't called me to in some time. That was refreshing and invigorating; it was merely (at its essence) a request for support. And support we should. The Steel Yard is an anchor helping to revitalize an area of the city that needs it with its facility location; revitalizing a city that can use those services with its good public works, as with its creation of beautiful and utilitarian benches, garbage cans, and bike racks seen around town; revitalizing people's skill sets by providing constructive classes in a variety of disciplines at fair tuition costs, for multiple age groups; and mostly, revitalizing metal-working as a discipline that is useful, positive, artistic, and tending away from defunct and back toward common. For all of that, The Steel Yard deserves our support in keeping alive The Spark. Get involved and be about it - highest recommendation.
