Attending The Nutcracker performed by the Ashley Ballet Arts Academy at Ted Mann Concert Hall was an absolutely magical experience that exceeded all expectations! From the moment we arrived on the University of Minnesota's West Bank campus, everything felt seamless and stress-free, starting with the easy parking. We pulled into the convenient 21st Avenue parking ramp just a short walk from the venue - no circling lots or distant street parking headaches here. It made getting to the show with family (including excited kids) so much smoother, especially on a chilly December evening. Plenty of spots were available, and the proximity meant we had time to enjoy the beautiful views of the Mississippi River from the area before heading inside.
The Ted Mann Concert Hall itself is a true gem of a theater - intimate yet grand, with outstanding acoustics and sightlines that make you feel completely immersed in the performance no matter where you sit. The traditional shoebox design with its warm wood tones and elegant tiers creates such a welcoming atmosphere, and not a bad seat in the house! The lobby is spacious and inviting, perfect for pre-show chatter or grabbing a quick snack. The staff and ushers were incredibly friendly and helpful, guiding us efficiently to our seats and ensuring everyone was comfortable. It's clear this venue was designed with both performers and audiences in mind, prioritizing clarity of sound and visual excellence.
And then, the wonderful performance of The Nutcracker by the Ashley Ballet Arts Academy - wow, it was pure holiday enchantment! This production brought Tchaikovsky's timeless score to life with sparkling choreography by the ABAA faculty. From the opening party scene with its joyful energy and intricate details, to the battle with the Mouse King, and the dreamy journey to the Land of Sweets, every moment was captivating. The young dancers, alongside talented guest artists, displayed incredible poise, technique, and passion that belied their ages. The little angels and soldiers were adorable and precise, stealing hearts with their enthusiasm, while the principal roles - Clara, the Nutcracker Prince, Sugar Plum Fairy, and all the divertissements from Spanish Chocolate to Arabian Coffee and the Waltz of the Flowers - were executed with grace, strength, and artistry that rivaled professional companies.
The costumes were vibrant and elaborate, the sets transported us straight into a fairy-tale world, and the live orchestration (or recorded accompaniment - it sounded flawless!) filled the hall with that iconic, heartwarming music. Highlights included the snow scene with its flurry of delicate snowflakes dancing in perfect synchronization, and the grand pas de deux that left the audience breathless. It was a perfect blend of tradition and fresh energy, ideal for families - my children were wide-eyed the entire time, and even the adults were swept away by the magic. This production truly captures the spirit of the holidays: wonder, joy, and community.
Overall, Ted Mann Concert Hall provided the perfect backdrop for Ashley Ballet Arts Academy's stunning Nutcracker. It's a holiday tradition we'll be returning to year after year. If you're looking for a heartwarming, high-quality ballet experience that's accessible and enchanting for all ages, this is it! Highly recommend - five stars without hesitation! read more
