In March 2023, I brought home a 3-month old doxie, who was just so cuddly and adorable. I've had dachshunds before and know they can be sassy, but my new pup, Norman, went from cute to nippy to full-on growling/snarling/biting/charging me in about 3 months time. He turned into a total a-hole, Mr. Alpha. Even though he was only 10 lbs, he had some sharp teeth and a bad attitude. I did some basic obedience training with him at my local PetCo, which was good for basic stuff, but he still had major behavioral issues. I thought maybe he would calm down a bit after I got him neutered at 9 months, but no go. This whole experience was so upsetting. I had never had a dog like this that was so difficult. All I wanted was to love my dog, and what I got was regularly bitten and a lot of stress. It got so bad that I called dachshund rescue places to see if they would take him - they said 'no thanks'. And I went so far as to fill out an intake form with the Animal Rescue League in August. I cried myself to sleep that night because I didn't want to give up on this dog, but it was way more stress and expense than I had bargained for. I spoke w/ Sam Ivy back in June and he told me about his behavioral program. I wasn't ready to make the investment at that point, but I liked what he had to say. I told him I wanted to wait until I got Norman neutered before investing in any more training. Fast forward to August - I was on the verge of giving Norman up and Sam texted me. He's no longer possessive of his food. Our walks are in control. His potty training routine has improved 100%. He doesn't bite me when I put his collars on. I can take him in public and he's been spot trained to sit and behave in a restaurant with me (can you say 'miracle'??). Our relationship is MUCH better and he's begun to understand that I am the pack leader and that I am the decision maker. Now - Holli is gem. She's no joke. She knows her stuff inside and out. Her expertise paired with SamIvy tools equals results. And remember at the end of the day, it is us - the pet owners - that need to be trained to manage our dogs. I signed up with Sam Ivy after my 2.5 year old dog, Teddy started exhibiting aggressive tendencies. He's a small, spoiled yorkie mix, who was extremely protective. Barking , guarding my door, attacking people who came near my room. This wasn't all the time but he was a loose cannon, which gave me serious anxiety. I was however worried I wouldn't be able to meet the tasks at hand because it felt like a big commitment. I'd tried dog training in the past. I hated it. Dexter, our standard poodle, was three months old when we started working with Sam Ivy. When we started, he wouldn't even walk with us on a leash and that was really frustrating. We purchased the full off leash package and were matched to work with Thuylinh. We had our doubts about whether a puppy could really learn all those commands, let alone perform them off leash. We had 25 training sessions. All of them were online (mostly using WhatsApp) and that didn't hold back Dexter's progress at all. Thuylinh taught us how to work with Dexter and he was doing the obedience commands right away, and reliably performing them all off leash way before we ever got to the last session. We're still in awe at his progress. We can walk him around our neighborhood without a leash. We can take him to a public park, and he will stay by our side and follow commands rather than running around and bothering everyone else. Where do I begin? This has been an incredible experience from the consultation with Sam to the training sessions with Holli. I rescued my adorable dog Hazel in January of 2024. Hazel was an absolute angel with an insatiable hunger for my furniture. Additionally, Hazel had separation anxiety from me (I couldn't really blame her...I'm pretty fun ). In all seriousness, the training was worth the money. I learned so many things that have been helpful including proper leash handling, learning crate/place and practicing obedience commands. Hazel is now a rockstar on the leash and no longer has separation anxiety from me when I leave the house. I just want to say a few things about Holli. Holli is the best trainer you could ask for. She knows her stuff, has a great personality and is super patient. I loved that she didn't make things overly complicated--I was able to take what she said and practice on my own between sessions. I am so glad I found Sam Ivy. Our dog Wrigley was shall I say "out of control" . We had various behavior issues. He had gone after another one our dogs a few times; he was always jumping up on us. Being aggressive toward others was just not acceptable. We were to a point that we had considered giving up Wrigley to a rescue but knew that was not a good option either. We wanted to keep our dog! After looking around and checking reviews on dog trainers in our area Sam Ivy stood out from the crowd. Our companion "Boss" was fairly well behaved but began to exhibit aggressive tendencies. Sam came to our house for a consultation and effectively and clearly identified the causes of Boss's behavioral issues and the solutions. After thinking about it over night my wife and I decided to move forward with the obedience program. It was expensive but if it prevented our dog from biting one person - it would be well worth it. Sam assigned Joel as our trainer. Upon meeting Boss , Joel seemed to connect with him immediately. With each lesson we were given assignments to practice and clearly defined goals. We saw immediate improvement and with each lesson the behaviors that concerned us started to diminish. By the end of the program Boss, was a different dog. As with any training method it is the dog owners responsibility to put in the required effort. However, the methods employed by the Sam Ivy team absolutely worked. We were recently got a beautiful Great Dane puppy (Indigo) from a great breeder. Although the little pup was gorgeous and would melt your heart, she also was very opinionated, opportunistic and was smart enough to get her way. I went to Sam Ivy because Indigo was nipping and biting my kids and me. Sadly, this behavior deterred us from getting close to her. After looking at a few dog trainers both local and franchise, we got a consultation with Sam Ivy. The Sam Ivy rep (Brett) was very thorough and honest. He set expectations and discussed methods. Although I was skeptical about training via zoom, Brett's honesty gave us what the assurance to give this a try. Next, Emily (our trainer) contacted us. She, not only did she have experience with Danes, ensured all our questions were answered before signing the contract. Emily and the Sam Ivy team were very supportive. Emily was pretty much available 24/7. In addition, if she could not answer a question, she would ask her colleagues. It was very clear that these were animal loving trainers that wanted to enable their clients for success. Although Indigo was a "difficult" case, we managed to graduate from Proper Pack training. The nipping and biting stopped (I am attaching a photo of my two sons with Indigo- now they can hug her which makes me so happy). Sam Ivy saved our dog - he gave us the tools we needed to keep our dog. We brought home Cooper, our beagle, at eight weeks old. Within weeks, we knew that Cooper's behavior was not "normal-puppy" behavior. He was biting us, biting others, and showed no respect for authority. We became prisoners to Cooper. We could not leave our house without him barking excessively, and we received complaints from neighbors about him barking for lengths of time after we left. We could not go on vacation because nobody wanted to watch Cooper. We were even told not to bring him back to the vet without sedating him first. He was more than a handful - he was a terror. Within one month of having Cooper, we started obedience training. After six weeks in training, the trainer told us Cooper was the most difficult dog she had ever worked with, and there was nothing more she could do for us. Cooper's second trainer told us that Cooper was not meant to be a family dog - he probably belonged on a farm and was not meant to be in a home. We were at a loss. Cooper was far from an affectionate dog, but he was part of our family, and we had become attached. We did not know what to do, but we knew that we could not keep up at this rate for 15 years. However, we understood that if we gave Cooper up, it was likely he would end up being passed around from family to family because nobody could handle him. It was likely he would bite someone and may end up being put down because of his actions. We then received a recommendation from a friend for Sam Ivy. The first thing Sam told us was that Cooper had no respect for us. Sam explained that Cooper was a dominant dog, and he was the alpha of our pack. In order for Cooper to love us, respect and trust had to come first. Sam explained to us that it could take up to 18 months of training to get Cooper under control and to be the best dog he could be. We knew it would be a commitment, but we also could not imagine our lives without him. We trained with Sam twice a week. Sam was hands off with Cooper - he never handled Cooper's leash. Rather, the program was about training us to command authority from Cooper and take back our place in the pack as alpha. Sam educated us on proper pack behavior and leash handling. Although Cooper continued to test boundaries, we saw a shift as he became more submissive. We learned that Cooper was driven by praise. He was quick to learn, but continued to fight for his spot in the pack. We were committed to earn Cooper's respect. Sam was patient and ensured that we built a strong foundation and understood each piece of the program. Within a few weeks, Cooper was walking at our heel and staying on "spot" for two hour intervals. We were beginning to get our lives back. With Sam's help, the program took under six months, much less than initially anticipated. Cooper is now the dog we always wanted. He respects us, and he has become affectionate towards us. Our family wants to watch Cooper now. We can have people over without worrying about how Cooper will act toward others. Online dog training didn't sound like the best way to train our Rhodesian Ridgeback, Gideon, but his attachment to us, his owners, made this type of training the most agreeable. He began to understand me as the pack leader as well as his loving owner. He was about 20 months old when we started his training and he had been showing aggressive tendencies toward other dogs that came into our home (his home). Thuilyn was our dog trainer; my first praise is that she was extremely patient and accommodating to my very busy schedule. She also allowed me to choose the momentum of Gideon's training; this worked really well for dog and owner!! We implemented the prong collar and multiple training commands that calmed his behavior and brought him from being a good dog to a great dog. His aggressive behavior Gideon was curbed. This past Thanksgiving, we had 3 large dogs along with 25 guests in my home and Gideon was the most well behaved of the pack. When I first met with Sam, I was edging on desperate. Gunner, my rottie mix, was a sweet boy - but very much the "man of the house." My husband had recently left and Gunner was protective of me and our new home to the point that I couldn't even have company over! Not sure where to start, but we had an absolutely incredible experience. Our two dogs are rescues at about 2 years old and we had just recently moved to the St Pete/ Tampa area in June from CO. Our dogs had created a very large weight on our lives and we had delayed getting them trained for so long because we had no idea whether it would really work or not. We had looked at a few programs but once we found sam Ivy online and read some of the testimonies, it seems all too similar to our situation and we could identify with many of the "before" stories and it gave us hope that maybe we would have a chance to have "good dogs" someday.. all too often I received the "Who's walking who" joke all around the neighborhood. We just finished two levels of training, Proper Pack Behavior, and Intermediate Training, with Sam Ivy K9 Training and their wonderful trainer, Jackie. We had a wonderful experience and would HIGHLY recommend them to anyone looking for a dog trainer. Their services are worth every single penny. We have two rescue dogs, Asha (almost 2 years old, Catahoula Labrador) and Chloe (6 years old, Chihuahua Mix). Our main concern was truly Chloe's barking. It didn't matter if it was a person, a car, a knock or even if the wind blew too hard - she would bark incredibly loudly and aggressively for an extensive period of time without any way to calm her down. This really hindered us from taking her out to festivals, dog-friendly restaurants, long walks or even opening the door to our patio to let fresh air in. After only a few visits, this was taken care of. Now she very rarely barks at all no matter if we are home or out and about. She is very well behaved and calm. Asha had trouble walking on a leash without pulling and had some confidence issues. She has been more of a skittish dog since we adopted her. She was a stellar student and has come leaps and bounds with her walking and has learned an extensive set of new skills. We are so happy with the investment we made with Sam Ivy. From the consult, through graduation, everyone has been so nice to work with and Jackie, our trainer, was absolutely amazing. Molly is our 3 year old English Bull Terrier, and anyone that knows the bully breed knows how stubborn they can be. She pulled on the chain, never met a squirrel she did not like, she's bossy and sassy and jumped up to say hello on anyone that came inside the house. OH my goodness!!! I have 3 great dane puppies, well they are 90 pound puppies and they were absolutely out of control. EVERYDAY I was in tears and wondering what in the world I was going to do. they they rolled me on the sidewalk and I was at my wits end. Sam Ivy really knows how to sell you a program but PROCEED WITH CAUTION. Does anyone else find it suspicious that a buisness has 700 reviews and they are all 5 stars? I do. They are extremely overpriced for essentially a face time lesson. There is no way you get quality training when there is not a trainer showing you exactly what to do. They use prongs and e collars which I am not opposed to, but owners need to be shown how to use them properly. 18 lesson program is $2000 one hour a piece. Basic obedience I would use them again, but I have a couple specific issues that need to be addressed. I was told to correct my dog, yet when I was popping her with her prong collar, the trainer said do it harder. I have a 20lb Jack Russell and I am already yanking the crap out of her. I had to draw the line because it clearly wasn't working and no other solution was suggested other than "correct harder". Gina did help me with a couple things but when you spend an hour waiting for your dog to mess up to correct the behavior, it is a waste of a very extremely expensive lesson. You need the trainer to show you specifically what to do, and you can't get that from a FaceTime when you have to juggle with a camera. One positive is that they record your lessons so you can watch them in the future. read more

We had the pleasure of being instructed by Alexis through to Advanced On Leach training. She's a very sweet and intelligent young woman. The results have been great. When we rescued our dog Ghost, a 1.5yr old German Shepherd, we could not for the life of us stop her from chasing and whining all day for our cats. But now they lounge with one another in our living room. We got to see how very smart our new dog was when she quickly mastered all of her obedience training as well. The reason for this one star review is for a couple of reasons. My wife and I have owned dogs our entire lives. We decided to contact Sam Ivey due to my wife and I adopted a Great Dane and wanted some extra help with training our puppy. We have two other dogs in our house at the time also. After starting training with Ryann, we noticed our dogs started to fear us when we tried to correct them. When our puppy first started to learn spot training at the hands of Ryann, he tried to jump away from Ryann when she forced him into "down" position. Our puppy was trying to get away from Ryann so badly, on a pincher collar, I had to stop the training due to fear of my dog getting hurt. When I contacted the owner Sam himself, I was insulted and basically told that I overreacted due to severing in the military and going to Iraq. At that point, I stepped out and allowed my wife and children to continue without me. When we explained to Ryann that we did not want to use a E-Collar (shock collar), we wanted to explore other options, Ryann basically told us that there was nothing she could do. They are fear and punishment based training - HER WORDS. Ryann stated that she could already see the aggression in our dog and "it's only going to get worse." The only person our dog has growled at, is Ryann! When we asked why other trainers don't use E-Collars, her answer "because they don't know what they are doing". We have taken our puppy to numerous stores and around a ton of people with no issues whatsoever. After holding our stance that we did not want to use the E-Collar, Ryann basically quit on us. When I tried to connect Sam over this, I felt that I was treated like our business and opinion didn't matter. Just because we are not the type to use fear and pain to train our dogs, they are the professionals and their opinions and recommendations are the only ones that matter. It is their training and no other way. So, if you want your dog to obey you based on fear, then Sam Ivy is the company you want. I regret ever calling them and making that initial appointment. While our dogs have learned spot, leash controls and boundary, it's going to take time to get them back towards their happy selves. read more

First I have to say Gina Avitabile is an amazing trainer, she has the patience of a saint and has tons of dog knowledge. I will be honest when I first came to Sam Ivy for training I had doubts because I already went through two other dog training programs that were a bust and I was nervous this would be another failed attempt at getting proper training for my dog. I have owned several dogs and never owned a dog with quiet the personality of my dog. I owned her from a pup, I thought I knew what I was doing and I try to keep her socialized however her personality began to change and at 1 year of age she became dog reactive and territorial of me, she would bark and try and lunge at people while on leash , loved to chase squirrels while dragging me down the street ( LOL) and lets not forget the tons of holes she dug in my backyard. I was at my wits end and to be honest my biggest concern was the territorial reactions and dog reactivity. I was reluctant to use a prong collar and a shock collar because of all the the controversy I have read on this items however I was shockingly surprised how beneficial they really are with the proper use. Gina was so patient with me in teaching me how to properly use the prong collar and shock collar as I had such high anxiety about using them, the prong collar has for sure become my best friend. All but one training session was done online Gina made scheduling the appointments so easy and worked with my schedule. In just one month I went from loosing my mind with my dog to having my best friend. My neighbors even noticed the difference she no longer digs hole in my backyard, she does not drag me down the street for a squirrel as well her reactiveness is under control. Now when I am out walking her I hear people tell me what a well behaved dog. I cannot thank GIna enough for all she has done for me and my dog. read more

My Husband and i bought a King Charles Cavalier. He is a great dog but was eating frogs. I live on a lake so there everywhere. My dog was getting stomach infections, it was a nightmare. I recently had my dog, Jolene graduate advanced off leash training with Sam Ivy. At 35 I'm a first time dog owner. I'm training Jolene to be a service dog to help me with injuries I received while in combat when I was serving in the Army. Training Jolene has been really tough. If you make an appointment with this establishment, good luck on them showing up. Then to boot, they will lie about how they showed up and knocked on your door while you were waiting on them, but insinuate it was YOUR fault because you didn't answer the door. Then when you call their business,no one answers. When you leave a message, it takes over 24 hours to get a callback. I can handle when circumstances arise that prelude keeping an appointment, but to lie to cover your own butt is unacceptable. That tells me all I need to know about this business. We are so thankful to Claudia and the Sam Ivy team. Claudia was our trainer and she was wonderful to work with. Our boys loved her and you could tell that she loved them just as much. When our boys first started training it was hard to do anything because all they wanted to do was play with each other and had no interest in listening to us. Claudia was so patient with us and the boys and coached us every step of the way. I had the hardest time taking the boys to the store or vet because they were constantly pulling on the leashes. Having two 60lb dogs tugging on you isn't easy as you can imagine. Now we can take our boys anywhere and they are so well behaved. Hi, We have a 18 month old black pitbull/Shepard and her name is Naya. Last year, Jan 2014 to be more exact, we went to Turk and Caicos Islands and walking down the street we ran into their local Human Society which its called the Potcakes Rescue. We went in and we saw her. Me and my wife fell in love with her. So we decided to the paper work and adopt her. So she came with us and we also help to fly a few other of her litter siblings here to the human society in Tampa. However over the course of the time, we noticed some aggression, territorial and very protective behaviors. We have another two dogs a mini Italian greyhound and a morkey.. She attacked the Italian greyhound twice because of food incidents and she started to now became very aggressive towards other dogs and just random people. Now we didn't even wanted to take her out for walks because we were afraid of her biting another dog or someone. We started to look for trainers and finally a few of friends told us about Sam Ivy.. We made the call and meet Sam. Decided that we need to get on board with the behavioral training and Gina Coughlin got assigned to work with us.. WOW, from the very first session we saw a difference in her.. I remember telling Gina in the 2nd session that I figured out their strategy and its switching dogs LOL. All seriousness now, we sticked to the plan and within the 4 weeks we worked together; we can say that Naya it's a total different dog. Not only they worked with Naya but also she helped us with Preston (the greyhound). It went from we either "got to get rid of her" because of fear and Now having a well behaved dog. We are so happy and grateful for what Gina and Sam did for our family.. Our kids now are so happy: now they say we have this awesome dog". We new we would need a trainer out of the gate when we got Lucy. We had two labs before. Easy one and a hard headed one. Wanted to be on the right track out of the gate. When we interviewed Sam, we saw nothing but his confidence in his system. We believed and now thanks to Brad training us to train Lucy we have a well behaved leash and off leash trained service dog at 8 mos old. My wife and I cannot say enough about Sam and his staff. It is not about the money when you know you are going to have a friend for years and years. As a service dog we can bring Lucy anywhere we want to. She is welcomed in stores with a smile.
