7/2021 First class - frozen in shyness and fear. Literally didn't move from that position, speak, or make eye contact with Sifu Laura.
    Setareh A.

I can't speak more highly of Sifu Wade and his team. They've been nothing short of amazing in transforming my coming-out-of-quarantine son, who'd had no social interaction or formal instruction since he was three, into a confident, proud, and strong big kid. We decided to enroll him in karate a few months before he started kindergarten. Mostly to boost his confidence and self esteem. During the trial class, he was frozen in fear. He didn't speak, didn't answer Sifu Laura, didn't make eye contact and even rolled into a tighter ball when she asked if he could put his arms out. Sifu Wade saw and suggested another trial class. He was a bit better at the second trial. We stuck with it. Each class he was more open and confident. Almost exactly 10 months later, he just got his purple belt. If you have a shy kid, this is the place for them!! I never felt like he was forced out of his comfort zone. Rather, he was given the tools and atmosphere for him to do it by himself.

I'm so glad I found Charles Gracie Academy. We moved to Livermore in August of 2024, and I signed…read moremy daughter up for Jiu-Jitsu classes shortly after. When I learned they had family plans, I signed myself up as well. What I was expecting when I enrolled my daughter was just an extracurricular activity to fulfill her need to move (and because she wanted to be like the Ninja Turtles). But what we've gotten back has been so much more. I've lost three pants sizes, for starters!! And I've also gained improved self-esteem, better focus, confidence in defending myself in shifty situations, a shared activity my daughter and I can practice at home together, and a passion I'll carry with me for the rest of my life. The list goes on and on -- but most of all, it's the camaraderie. In so many ways, I feel like I found my second home when I started training. Everyone is so friendly and patient as I learn, and I've met some truly awesome new friends. The coaches are all passionate about their craft, and that really sets them apart from other Jiu-Jitsu gyms. I know because I've tried other academies before, and Charles Gracie is unmatched in the level of care their coaches give to each student. They know their students by name and take the time to check in with how they're doing. They make sure no one falls through the cracks and that everyone understands the techniques. Last of all -- this place is super CLEAN!!! Every day after class, we see the coaches cleaning the mats, floors, toilets, locker rooms, and doors. It's such a relief not to worry about catching anything nasty. The other academies I tried were honestly grotesque -- grime in places that's hard to ignore -- it made me cringe. Honestly though, come check it out and see for yourself.

The classes are so full you have to get there early to see at all, and even then it's obstructed views and a long distance over the mats. You have to stand in the front of the stuido, I was asked to leave from the back window. I'd really like to see them offer the inside viewing again. My kids like jiujitsu training, and it sucks that this one aspect absolutely ruins the experience for the parents. I've seen jiujitsu have a sense of community and this place ain't it.

Kids talk at school and they often hear how mean other instructors are at other facilities. My boys are 9 and 10 and have been attending since 5 years old. Their self-confidence, coordination, and endurance have gone up drastically since beginning. When my little one first started out he couldn't make a full class without running to mommy for a hug or just taking a time out. Now he's fierce and I see him going far, perhaps being an instructor himself one day. Master K and the other instructors are phenomenal. They have a visible passion for the art and pass that passion down to the students. Each instructor takes the time to get know all the kids and to work with them on their strengths and weaknesses. They emphasize character building and respect for others. In addition, the facility is very clean. I can't say enough good things about Elite Taekwondo Academy, the instructors and the students here. If your looking to get your kids into martial arts, I would highly recommend Elite Taekwondo Academy.

As an adult, I'm in the teenager group since they don't have adult-only classes, but they do accept adults there. Classes include physical exercises, TKD basics (both the physical techniques and theory), character building, sparring, and forms. The regular classes maintain a medium level of physical activity. Parents can attend all classes and watch their children perform. There's also a sparring team for those who want more of a challenge - it's much more physically demanding and even includes a run at 8:30 on Sundays. Students of all ages participate, and the team attends competitions with trainers. The school focuses on both form and sparring, with a strong emphasis on safety. They don't push sparring until students feel comfortable with it, and all sparring is done in full gear. There's no head contact until students reach higher belt levels, but helmets and mouth protectors are always used. They sell uniforms and all required equipment at the school itself. They use a 3-stage system per belt color: white stripe, full color, and black stripe. Each belt has a set of clear requirements that students know, and they earn special marks on the belt as they progress, making it easy to see how prepared they are. None of the belts are given too fast and the exams are actually fair. As a result, kids have a very strong feeling of progression and that their efforts are rewarded. There's also a digital system to keep track of all requirements and a YouTube channel where teachers demonstrate the necessary skills, along with recordings of events and regular school activities. There's a strong sense of community here. Most kids have been training for years, and the same teachers have been running the school for a long time. There are a lot of girls at the school, at least a third of all students. Some of the younger black belts help with teaching, which gives them opportunities to develop further. The teachers are extremely helpful. Students with no skills join all the time - it's totally fine to show up in regular sport clothes - and they get an assigned teacher who walks them through everything during the first class or two to help them not feel left out afterward. The other students are always willing to help as well.

As that…read moreprogram ended and I've been absent from the facility for many years, this to me, warrants a full NEW review which I will be updating as I try out more of the amazing recovery and biohacking services. I just didn't want to wait until I tried everything to post a review of this hidden gem! Don't let the name distract you from all the amazing offerings. I tried the Vasper system last week which was SO awesome! I fell off a ladder a couple weeks prior and still baby'ing some soft tissue damage. The cooling system integrated with hi/low intervals really awakened my body again and alleviated some lingering pain. At the same time, as someone on permanent disability from chemicals and fighting lung function challenges, the versatility of this system from strictly rehab to the other end of full on cardiovascular and strength challenges for the most fit is super cool.. literally, as you cool while you work out or rehab.. I just don't know what else to say except come in and try it for whatever your need! -- sorry no photos this time, but will get some next time for you! And then today! I have to say I'm one of those that can't calm the mind.. so I do, and I teach, Pilates.. which is an amazing way to better your body and health by redirecting the mind to notice what your body is and can do.. it also involves a lot of breathing experiences... So, this Float Therapy had me thinking my mind would wander and what is the point? Well, I will tell you it's SO worth it.. Yes, as a crazy single mom also caring for a parent thought no way would I "float" for an hour... You WILL! Everyone will float.. once you float you kind of have to well, relax.. you have the choice for music and soft light, or one or the other, or just none.. I found out I was the "none".. I loved the calm, no lights and connection with my breathing and if I chose to move, I was so aware.. which was great with knee injuries too... mostly the sensation for my back after the ladder fall was amazing.. tonight I actually feel like my back is "all good"... My experience is MY experience and I was doing other self healing for my back, even chiropractic last week, but this was what I needed to get over my recovery hump... I can't wait to try everything at Arena Training and Recovery... I highly recommend as a fitness and Pilates professional, that you will be pleasantly surprised to find some amazing treatments here for rehab and recovery as well as what you would expect from kick butt workouts for both kids and adults with alternate classes for movement and strength.
