There's a Harvey's-Swiss Chalet combo store that I like visiting. Across from these eateries is this Scotiabank branch. It's a couple of doors down from a Starbucks cafe that I also like to visit now and again. This Scotiabank branch does not have a drive-thru, similar to the Starbucks. This branch does have parking spots in front of it with the Scotiabank logo marking each spot. Each logo is attached to a post that allows folks with bikes to chain and lock them up. There are a couple of ABMs on the left when you enter the branch. The area is clean and the ABMs are available 24 hours a day. The branch is closed on Sundays. Its teller hours are similar to other Scotiabank branches. It's open from 9:30 am Monday through Saturday. It closes at 5 pm from Monday through Wednesday. It stays open an extra hour on Thursdays and Fridays. On Saturday, it closes at 4 pm. I have never needed any teller services. I tend to hit the ABM to either deposit or withdraw money. First of all, they helped us obtain a very competitive rate, much better than the rates at other banks. Since I'm an American, it was much more work since I didn't have Canadian credit history, but they were willing to cover the cost of requesting a US credit report. They were also willing to reduce the holding period for US currency transferred in. The bankers that we worked with were always on top of things and were very accommodating. Not everything was smooth sailing, though. One time they lost a bank draft, but were very apologetic and expedited a replacement bank draft. As our mortgage renewal is coming up, Scotiabank was not able to give us as competitive a rate as before, so we'll have to move on. But the bank officer, again, was helpful in answering our questions about how to maximize our payments without penalty. He even asked us to notify him when there are 3 bi-weekly payments in a month because their mortgage payment systems don't properly handle more than 4 payments a month (we decided to start matching our payments). So kudos to the bank officers at this Scotiabank branch for being knowledgeable, customer-centric, and very accommodating. It truly changes the way I perceive banks. I would recommend going to another branch if time is of the essence for you because the line up at this branch tends to move very slowly because of all the nonas and avôs that chat up the tellers. Also, I noticed one of the staff at the front door opening the door for people who were entering and exiting the bank, given that this is unusual I asked why she was doing this, I was told there was a security breach at a nearby branch. Why do they constantly book my appointment with a non-mutual fund rep when it clearly states on my profile that my RSPs are in mutual fund accounts? From what I recall, whenever someone calls in to make an RSP appointment, the staff member who answered the phone is to look at the customer's profile quickly to ensure the appointment is booked with the appropriate service rep. Well whatever. Each time I call, I assume they have completed the proper research to book the appointment. I shouldn't bother giving them the benefit of the doubt. But stupid me, I do. And repeatedly, each time I come in, that individual I'm booked with can not complete my transaction in front of me and needs to forward my request to someone else. Any normal person would be annoyed. Then again... I'm not normal. (Haha!) But regardless of the lack of real time service, the staff have been always been friendly, easy to get along with and have always communicated to me articulately on why someone else will have to complete the transaction. This is key. It's all in the communication. And this branch has always proved TDCT deserves my business even if they fail in booking my appointments with the correct person. Btw, the majority of this branch's clients are business customers. Therefore during the busy times such as RSP deadline day, there will always be someone available to help you with your contribution. It's a small, community based credit union, and of course you have a say in how it's run. And also you get returned a share of the profits! In 2013, they returned something like $250,000 to their members. I originally signed up to this bank because I saw a sign that said they offer free chequing while passing by on the Bloor night bus. I think one of the reasons that this place is a secret is because the hundreds of thousands of people passing underneath it every day don't see this sign. Here are some of the things you get for free that you don't get anywhere else: -Free certified cheques and Money Orders (!) -Free regular cheques -Free pretty much everything else! -Teller service, if you want it -Free use of The Exchange ATMs across the country; you probably have one around the corner and you don't even know it yet... -Only $2 to use Mastercard ATMs in any other country in the world - that's cheaper than they advertise! Potential barriers: -Both branches are in Etobicoke along the Bloor subway line. I live in Vancouver now, though, and that hasn't really stopped me from enjoying their services. -You have to buy a $40 share to join. But you would get the money back if you wanted to leave.

Another great thing about this place is the honesty and oh.. the open hours. As for honesty, the finance reps are really open on what they think the corporate side of the house is going to do. They're not going to make a customer have false hopes and I really appreciate that. Most places make you jump through hoops just to get a possibility of a good rate but here, they're upfront of what they think is going to happen ... and it does happen as they explained. This place is also very conveniently located AND has great hours. It's open 7 days a week and with late hours to accomodate my busy work week. It's really ideal. Naturally, I was curious about this notion and asked my parents if I could have one. My dad banked with TD (Toronto Dominion) well before it became TD Canada Trust. This branch used to be on the southwest corner of Queen Street East and Lee Avenue. It's now a Coles. Oddly, it's shortened these days to TD because it's easier to say. My mom had bank accounts at this Scotiabank. They decided that since my mom stayed at home at the time that I should get an account with Scotiabank from this branch and we could do banking together. It still exists, which makes me happy. My mom and I visited this branch to get a Getting There savings account for me. This program also exists after all these years! If you're under twelve years of age, you need an adult to open an account with you. It gives you high interest as a youth. I saw the magic with compound interest back then. I'm hoping that the magic is still there with this savings account. Back then, it was a paper account book with maple leaves on the cover. Whenever I had enough to deposit $5, we'd go to the bank. I'd fill out a deposit slip and visit a teller who would complete the deposit and print out my new savings account total for me. It was exciting for me as a kid. I had this account all the way through high school. Here's hoping that kids get a bank card and can do deposits at the ABM, with hitting a teller as a last resort. My parents and I moved to Markham. All three of us ended up changing our bank branches and accounts. My parents cancelled their respective accounts from branches in the Beaches and ended up with RBC. I cancelling my savings account here and moved to Winnipeg to open an RBC account. I like Scotiabank. I liked banking here. My mom did, too. RBC was the closest branch to where I lived in Winnipeg, so I went with it. There was one Chinese bank teller named Judy. She and my mom spoke Cantonese. It was nice and a rarity at the time in the Beaches, which wasn't as culturally diverse as it is now. The ABMs are inside the branch. It has better hours of operation. It's open till 5 pm on most days, except Saturdays when it closes at 4 pm. It's closed on Sundays.
