After spending over $1k at their shop, I went on the ice to do one loop around the rink to check if the new skates fit properly. Other LA King locations like Pickwick Ice the shop has adjusted my skates and let me go on the ice to try it out. Same with Great Park Ice. Here the manager yelled over to me saying I can't get on the ice and have to pay $20 to do one loop and see if the skates fit. I explained to her I just spent over $1k at their shop and am just trying the skates out. She said she didn't care, said she wanted $20 for one loop so I left. Distasteful! Initially I was thinking I'd return to the rink for the sake of old times, but after she was so disrespectful I have no desire to return. As the expression goes, she cut her nose to spite her face.

All the teachers are great and I love how the teachers rotate through all the classes so that the kids get to meet everyone. He has enjoyed private lessons with Coach Dominic- his favorite teacher - and he loves waving hi to all of them whenever he's out and about. Additionally, the criteria for the classes is easy to follow and if have any questions, everyone is happy to help you out. Not only is the faculty here great, but the general atmosphere is wonderful as well. Most of the regular patrons are attentive, polite and kind... I often observe them stopping to help (or just check in) others when they fall or get stuck. A great family atmosphere all around. You can park on site or take the metro train for less than $2 one way. Just be weary of wandering homeless. There is security around these parts for safety. They are trying, but they can't be at every single corner or street. The tickets include skate rentals and the use of a small locker. All ages and skate levels welcome! I'm no skater by any means, but I'm a slow waddler off the rails. If you're terrified, yes, you can hold the rails all around the entire time, there's plenty others in the same boat. Small kids can get a standing penguin to help them skate, very cute. I recommend dressing warmly since you are on ice for at least an hour. Also something durable in case you fall like jeans or thick pants. Overall an hour of skating is enough! These skate shoes hurt so bad. Towards the last 5-10 minutes of the session my feet were done and didn't want to move. You can hear sighs of relief from everyone taking off their skates at the end. P.S. they don't carry half shoe sizes so be prepared to size up or down. Overall it's a nice and fun experience. PSA the sidewalk and walkways reek of pee. Once you're inside, it's okay. That's a turn off. It's LA what can you say.

Most ballet studios only reward tweens and early teens who have small bones, long legs, flexibility, nicely arched feet, small heads, tapering fingers, and parents that can pay for them to come 1-2 times a day, 6 days a week. Not so at Dance West. Mike & Monique, the owners, are serious about ballet and yet they temper it with the understanding that only 1% of their tweens and teens wants to be a professional dancer and that all of their adult dancers dance because they love it. They make ballet fun and hire teachers for tap, jazz, and hip hop that keep that attitude of fun. This is the least snooty dance studio I've been to, and I've been to A LOT of dance studios. Back when it was in Seal Beach, the class schedule & studio brochure used to note that eating disorders were not tolerated. Only by eating a healthy diet and healthy meals would dancers become strong enough to meet the demands of dance, it said. The connected company, Metropolitan Ballet Company, has won choreographic and performance awards in Europe on several occasions.

My daughter and I finally decided to join Nonosina after my friend nudged me to go for the longest…read moretime. I was nervous to try something new with very little dance experience. I danced cultural shows in high school, and briefly danced at another studio but that was it. After struggling and thankfully recovering from postpartum depression and anxiety, I wanted to find a place where I could take care of myself physically, mentally and emotionally. I also wanted to do something with my daughter and find a sense of community. I've gained and learned so much more than from when I first started there. I've witnessed how much both my daughter and I have progressed and developed as dancers and individuals. From building self confidence improving basic moves, learning about the Polynesian culture, and love and joy from friendships formed while being there. It's become our second home. Nonosina has a strong foundation, focusing on the fundamentals of Polynesian dance culture. In the beginner classes, they spend time on teaching the basics, technique and cultural meaning behind the steps and music. They also offer advanced classes for experienced dancers with amazing and choreo and beats. There's a good reason why it's still thriving after over 61 years with hundreds of students. It's a busy studio with the leaders taking care of its hundreds of students and also making an impact outside with Moana movies and other cultural ventures. But it doesn't take away from how the Nonosina team invests time, care and passion into its students. Aunty Ricky, Tiana and Kayla, Jaidan, Leila and Courtney pour so much love, care, mana, cultural knowledge into the students there. I would highly recommend trying it out there if you have an open mind and heart to learn. Theres a wealth of knowledge, passion and talent that they offer there.
