The drive to the restaurant was lovely and scenic, going down dark and winding country roads until suddenly we drive around a corner and The Devonshire Arms appeared! We'd got there a little early and we sat down by the bar for some drinks. The menu was displayed on a chalkboard by the seating area and it all looked yummy! The dining area was quite small but very nice and cosy. The kitchen was open and you could see the chefs chopping and cooking away which I quite liked. I chose the rabbit and pheasant terrine with grape chutney as my starter; it came with onion bread and the slice of terrine was huge! I really wanted to finish it, but I couldn't as there was no way I'd be have enough room for my main! For the main, I had venison steak served with new potatoes (usually served with mash which I couldn't have as it had milk/cream in it) and braised red cabbage. The steak was pink and cooked to perfection and the red cabbage was sweet but with a little tart edge to it. I didn't have a dessert but the rest of the party did - my boyfriend had a deconstructed banana cheesecake and his sister had a brownie (I overheard her saying it was the best brownie she'd ever tasted!). All of the staff were really nice, especially the lady who served us that night, she was really lovely and very attentive. The Devonshire Arms fully deserves it's awards and hope it gets more in the future. If you're ever around the Sheffield area and want to venture out of the city centre for some food make sure you come here. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect meal.

There is Kebabish on The Wicker but to be honest their currys are a little poor. The Mangla and The Kashmir Curry Centre don't open for lunch. It's a problem, or is it? My friend and I had enjoyed a couple of pints in The Fat Cat and needed a curry so we drove to Firth Park. Hot & Spicy is one of a number of curry bars located at the Northern General Hospital end of Firth Park Road. It is certainly unpretentious and unlicensed and can not really be described as a restaurant, more a take away/curry bar. The establishment has tables to do 24 covers. Take-away and eat in business was plentiful and brisk whilst we were there. We ordered 2 chicken balti's and 3 roti's each. The currys were made from scratch, no bought in ready made sauces were used here! The owner / manager came out to ask us how hot we wanted our curries and I think he was surprised when we replied apna. The curry when it came was probably the best I have ever had anywhere, even beating ones I have had in Bradford. The rotis were also excellent and the owner gave us a free generously sized salad and yogurt dip. Excellent. The only draw back was that the curry was served in a polysterene box and not on a plate even though we had aked prior to ordering if it would come in a balti dish / bowl / plate. This wasn't really a problem for us as we are used to, in fact prefer the ethnic, utilitarian type of curry house that are prevalent in Bradford and that can also be found on Spital Hill in Sheffield. So the curry, what was it like; sublime. There was no after meal bloatedness, no indigestion, no heart burn, no flatulence - it was perfect. I can not recommend this establishment as a full blown restaurant dining experience. You certainly wouldn't take any one there on a first date. However if you need a lunch time curry then it has to be the place to go. If you are a bit of a curryholic like us then it is worth a visit to see just how good a real ethnic curry can be. At lunch time there is a carvery which has some really tasty dishes, not just joints of meat but there are home made pie dishes and pork in mushroom sauce and many other dishes to chose from. You can have two courses for £5.99 which may have gone up I haven't been over the last few weeks but the desserts are also delicious. I especially enjoy the plum crumble with custard but there are lots of choices. It is nice to go at lunch time if you have the chance and is very warm and cosy. The waitresses are dressed in complete waitressing outfits and really know what they are talking about when they describe the food. I love it there!

While many restaurants in the area seem to be nudging their prices up, these are still very reasonable. The curries taste more tomato-based than others giving them a slightly different flavour. The korma has a lovely taste of coconut whereas others tend to try and hide this flavour with spices. Another thing to mention is the quality of the meat. Some indian restaurants have a nasty habit of leaving chicken pink in the middle unless you order tikka but every curry I have had from Shimul has been cooked thoroughly. Delivery is always prompt and we've never had any problems with the orders. I really hope they don't let their standards start slipping!
