Before I begin let me start off by saying that this review is based solely upon my personal experiences and my personal experiences alone, so with that being said let's go!. This is another ymca location that offers more than sone of the other locations in the area. Bigger in size and more machines to work out with. Ultimately they have all the features to help you have a great workout experience! read more

I love this spot. Very large amount of options for the kids and adults. They provide a positive environment for all ages. The value is great. Customer service is great. Any activities they provide are worth it! read more

People using phones in locker room and steam room. Someone was upset today and I heard "everyone" uses their phone in Locker area. Phones have cameras. Who knows what peoplearedoing.. I the leave mine in the car outside. The Reservation Laplanes are a joke. There are rules posted everywhere but no one thinks the rules are meant for OTHER PEOPLE. I like the place but not everyone follows the rules. It seems rules are for the Other People. read more

We've been coming to this Y for a couple of weeks now for swim lessons, so this review is focused on that. It is not close to our home, but was the only place that wasn't wait-listed when we felt comfortable signing up again. The location is conveniently located off of 664 in the Western Branch area of Chesapeake and is very easy to find. From the outside, you'll see the clean playground and splash pad, which we are eager to try soon. It appears that they may be expanding in outdoor recreational size. On the Saturday mornings we have been, there are usually several staff members at the front desk and all have been friendly and welcoming. On our first visit, they were kind enough to direct us to the family locker room and regular locker rooms and also provide directions to the indoor pool. We found the locker rooms to be very clean, with appropriate non-slip mats near the pool entrances, plenty of lockers, shower stalls, changing stalls and restrooms. I really thought the swimsuit spinners were a nice (and very clever) addition, as well as plenty of bags for wet suits or shoes. The swim instructors we met were so kind. We had a substitute the first week. Her regular instructor has been helpful and our daughter seems to like the class. She has run a little short on lesson time and we're hoping that's not a trend, since lessons are quite an investment for non-members. Of note, if you wish to swim laps, reservations are required for 30-min time slots. We scoped out the Stay & Play kids area as we are considering future membership. They have rooms separated for different ages and stages. I was a bit disappointed to see a crowd of kids around a tv when there are so many games and activity stations readily available to engage the children. I would note to the caregivers if you wish your child to be in a separate area or ask if this is an option. Overall, we were impressed with the cleanliness of the facility and the availability of equipment (weights and cardio) as well as areas for basketball, swim and other activities. It's a nice facility and definitely worth checking out. read more

The lap lanes are not under control. I've been telling them of drama one has to deal with lane reservations but it falls on deaf ears. It's a free for all in the reservation lap lanes reservation. I'm told to ask lifeguard for help. One Sunday I asked for help as all lanes were in use. I have a reservation tho.....and I am told by Lifeguard that they don't know what to do for me. I think after all these years this YMCA its time to find swimming somewhere where it's safe and someone is watching out for people's lives. Certainly not this pool......I have left twice without swimming with my reservation because of no help. read more

All my life I was scared of swimming but it was on my bucket list. I am 47. Whitney showed me how to use goggles- sensitive eyes and we spent 4 days teaching me how to breathe while swimming. That is the secret trick to swimming. Once your brain stops panicking when your nose goes under the water, you will have enough oxygen to swim. I swam two laps all by myself while breathing correctly. This was important to me because I hope I will have fewer panic attacks in other parts of my life read more

Taylor Bend Family YMCA - My swimming papers - Gyms Near Me - Chesapeake, Virginia

I've been a member of YMCA since 2017 and Taylor Bend Family YMCA is one of the first YMCA locations that I've been to. This location is one of the closest to our house. Taylor Bend Family YMCA is a two story gym with an indoor and outdoor pool. Of all the YMCAs that I've been to, this is probably one of the busiest. I do not recommend going here during the peak hours which is around 5pm-8pm. It is really crowded in here. One of the reasons why I am giving it a 3 stars. It makes me feel claustrophobic because it tends to get stuffy in here. My favorite thing about this gym is their indoor track. Lately, I would rather walk in the track rather than do cardio on a treadmill. They also have weight training rooms and programs for a healthier lifestyle. Compared to the other YMCA staffs, the Taylor Bend Staff are less friendlier to the members. Some are indifferent, but most of them are really nice. The exercise instructors are really helpful and friendly though. I will keep coming back at Taylor Bend YMCA for their track and their indoor pool. For the most part, I have a pretty good experience here in YMCA except when it is busy. read more

We've spent much of our summer at this location for the kids swim lessons, wellness center and stay and play facilities. I'm happy with everything. My son has come away from weeks of swim lessons with some confidence and basic technique to practice moving forward. And I felt comfortable using the infant and toddler stay and play time so I could get back in the gym myself. I even took a week of private adult swim lessons for myself and sometimes practice my own swimming now. I'm very happy with the staff which has a nice mix of both young and more mature employees. My kids got plenty of attention in stay and play and we're happy with all of the swim instructors. The front desk staff are friendly and helpful, the facility is well maintained and clean and even the gym members are warm and friendly! read more

The facility is ok. Family/unisex locker room and restrooms have been closed for 2 weeks. Twice in the past 2 weeks, small female children brought into men's locker room to use restroom. Yesterday, it was a dad sitting looking at his phone while his below 7yo daughter stared around at people getting dressed, man was completely oblivious. This is a liability nightmare. lawsuits can come from both directions. I saw a YMCA staff member escorting a female child into the womens locker room to use restroom. Small children are not allowed upstairs in gym area to use restrooms. No signage stating this issue, warning guests or directing protocol. Asked front desk attendant. They said maintenance person " working on the leak" .... for 2 weeks. The therapy pool (jacuzzi) has also been down for over a month. Locker rooms have rusting shower accessories. Lockers veneer peeling. Always dirty. Overflowing garbage cans outside. Time to look elsewhere. read more

This is a one of the best Gyms I've ever been to,The downstairs gym is reminds me of the old school gyms I used to go to years ago so if you're into serious Strength training, Body Building ,Power lifting or just a hard-core atmosphere then go to this YMCA, Also a indoor Basketball court,Indoor & outdoor pool ,Jacuzzi, upstairs a indoor track, Cardio equipment, Heavy bag ,Heavy ropes, Weight training equipment, Stretching equipment as well, Sauna and showers & clean locker room read more

My gym of choice. My kids have fun in child watch while I work out so that gives me peace of mind. The staff is friendly and helpful. A variety of machines and classes for levels and degrees of exertion/exhaustion. There are so many programs in addition to their fitness classes like baseball or dance for the younger kids. All of my children have taken swim lessons here too! A nutrition class for adults. Parents night out for a couple hours of free babysitting. My oldest daughter has even participated in the young leaders volunteer group for teens. The YMCA is a great organization and this YMCA maintains the standards! read more

Taylor Bend Family YMCA - Water park - Gyms Near Me - Chesapeake, Virginia

One of the nicest Ys I've been too. It's pretty big--there's an indoor basketball court, pool, indoor track, steam room, and weight room. Even when it's busy, it doesn't feel crowded. Cardio machines can be connected to the tv or where you can change the channel. Group classes offered such as Zumba, cycling, yoga, and more. There are after school and summer programs for kids and a separate room to drop kids off while working out. You can sign up for a free workout plan and track your workouts and weights in their system. Staff is friendly and the gym is clean. It's a very nice laid back community that comes here from kids to seniors. read more

For a gym, yep. This is "As good as it gets!" All the machines always work and are clean and inviting. There's always a staff member within eyesight and available. They have a large variety of programs and plenty of classes available. They offer personal training. They have a free tracking program for DIY goal-setting and training. There's childcare and volunteer options. Four pools (for different purposes). Large, clean and well stocked locker rooms. Homeschool programs. Here's a one-off story: one day I went to the pool there. Didn't realize that I just left my ipad hanging out on the bench in the locker room. It wasn't there when I came out. I checked my car, nope. Definitely brought it inside. Damn! I checked "Find my iPhone" app and sure enough, it was still on-premises, somewhere. Hoping to get help finding it from the people at the front desk, I told them my dilemma. They reached down under the desk and handed me my iPad. Yes, I'm an idiot. Yes, someone there is a saint. Actually, multiple people there, because it had to have switched hands at least twice. I love this branch. I love the patrons. I love the employees. I am beyond pleased with my membership and all that comes with it here. Also, this location is connected to more than a dozen others (25, actually). So, I can go almost anywhere in Hampton Roads and find a YMCA of which I can use their facilities... They even have a location in Olney and one in Jamesville (across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel *shivers*). read more

I love it here!! I have been a member for a year now and the benefits, facility, events...everything is great!!! If I had to complain...the membership of $88 for family...sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh!! But hey, they are definitely making my money work for me and the facility. Every now and then something is down (broke), or maintenance is needed. Which is cool things happen, but for the most part, it is never too crowded in which I cannot get my workout on. Or not too crowded in which, my 6yr old cannot enjoy herself in the interactive zone or at the pool. The waterpark/outdoor pool is definitely a hot asset!! And now they are building a park for all ages to enjoy...cannot wait for that!! I do believe I will be a member for life!! And yeah, other facilities in the area, I am able to go there too with my membership at this site!! Awesomeness :) Everything you want at a neighborhood gym, the Y has it covered! read more

This is truly a fantastic YMCA!! It is very clean with a lot of great group classes. I have tried various yoga classes but they also offer Pilates, barre, kickboxing, Zumba, and many others. Yoga & spin Sandy is amazing! upstairs, they have a lot of machines so you can usually find one to satisfy your cardio fetish. There is always a line for the Zumba going on in the group studio up there. There is also a spin room, a walking/running track, and a personal training area in the center. First floor, they have a weight room, basketball court, indoor pool and access to outdoor pool, very competent childcare (during the week, can't speak for weekend), very clean locker rooms with steam saunas/showers/lockers/hair dryers/personal hygiene items/etc...The staff is always so warm and willing to help answer any questions. I wholeheartedly recommend this Y. read more

Great facility all around. Been to several YMCAs and I like this one the most. Location is easy to get to. Parking lot is accessible, although I have heard that some people have had their cars broken into in the lot. Staff is knowledgeable and friendly. Great cardio, aerobics, indoor running track, easy child care, interactive zone for kids, bball court, pool, awesome outdoor pool, great free weights. No complaints from me and worth the money. I don't play basketball, but the gym is a little small. I don't think you can play full court there. read more

This is the most up-to-date and clean YMCA I have ever been to. I was lucky enough to volunteer with ODU school of nursing to take blood pressures for Healthy Kids Day 2016, and they had a great outdoor area that offered face painting, free brochures and items, food trucks, a police car and fire truck, and health information for parents and children alike! The staff was so wonderful and really organized a great event. They have schedules of classes and TONS of informational packets available for those who are interested in signing up. read more

I was in town visiting family and decided to bring my niece and nephews here to enjoy the pool. The process to obtain a guest pass was fairly easy. I love that its pretty easy to enjoy the facility as a guest of a member. If you are in state, its free and being that I was out of state; I paid $5 which isn't bad. The facility was clean, well decorated and very kid friendly. There appears to be something for everyone here. Swimming lessons were being conducted in the pool and then the lap pool opens for everyone to enjoy. There is a jacuzzi that is a decent size. The locker area was clean and spacious and makes for an easy trip back home because you can be clean and showered! We solely stayed outside in the pool area. There is a back gate that allows entranced directly to the pool area so you don't have to walk through the facility (wet and cold) trying to get to you car; if parked in the front. However, this gate has not been opened for the summer hours; which is unfortunate. The pool area had a huge play area for children. It was colorful and bright and had all kinds of "water attractions" for kids. There is a kiddie pool that is about 2 feet 8 inches deep and it has a slide. Then of course there is the main pool that reaches 5ft at its deepest. There are lifeguards throughout the area and what I liked is that they rotated and relieved each other quite frequently. I felt this method keeps them alert on what was going on in the pool area vs someone who sits for hours at a time (which could cause a decrease in attentiveness). The restrooms were easily accessible from the pool area. The staff was friendly and our experience was great. We would definitely return. read more

Amazing pool and facilities...but, my nephew was signed up for their T-Ball which took place in the grassy field that is out front. It was absolutely disgusting. They NEVER cut the grass. It was awful walking to the "fields" which were just base mats thrown haphazardly in the grass. The kids spent half the "games" scratching their legs from where the grass kept brushing against them and the other half it was almost too hot to do anything because there is NO shade. Worst Tball experience, ever. read more

Have been a member there for almost a year.Go there for cardio(tread mill&bike). Go approx 5 to 6 days per week also walk the track have done up to 60 laps on one occasion. I really enjoy it there and the price is right. Wife also goes she goes for the pool exercise class. read more

I've been going here for the past 2 years and it's a good get away for me. I would recommend an upgrade to the bathrooms and wish the weight room was larger with more options. Overral I'm comfortable here and have made progress in my health since I've joined. read more

I've had a YMCA membership years ago but had to cancel it because of relocation. But I had no problems with it back then. It was through my mother in law that I was able to come here as a guest while she was in town. I thoroughly enjoyed it enough where I came home and convinced my husband to join the Y. In comparison to the Greenbrier facility, it is a little smaller but still very clean. The equipment seems to be in working order and there are enough machines and equipment for everyone. I am in love with their childcare. My son is a few months old and it is very convenient to drop him off here instead of hubby and I taking turns to work out. We can now both work out at the same time. The childcare workers are all very nice and upbeat and I see how they interact with other children. Some kids don't want to play nice with other kids and I have seen that they do not allow that and help to resolve any disagreements instead of having the kids bicker--which is awesome in my mind. So you don't have to worry in that regard. All of the facilities I have used are clean as well and just inviting. Their classes are very fun as well. I haven't come to a class I didn't like. I am particularly fond of their yoga class. Overall, I love it. The benefits are exceedingly great and the staff is just really cool and pleasant to be around. I will recommend to a friend! read more

Something for everybody. Exercise equipment is fairly new. Has free weights as well. Staff pretty good too. Facility seems to be pretty clean every time I go. Indoor track. Nice indoor pool with hot tub and also therapy pool. Outdoor pool open Memorial Day through Labor Day. Gym is tiny... can play half court only although there are two hoops to shoot at. Have activities for all ages and fitness levels. Added an outdoor field this summer too. Family changing areas as well as separate mens and women's locker rooms/showers etc. Pretty darn good. Knock out wall for full court and add on an addition plus wi-fi and cafe would get 5 stars. read more

I always thought the YMCA was a great place. Good price for the gym, all the amenities and childcare. Been coming here for a while now amd while it may not be the flashiest looking gym with high tech TVs all over and a man handing you a towel when you sweat, the people that work here really make this place great. I just joined here a few weeks ago. I am really impressed with this place. The facilities are great. The staff is so friendly and helpful. My toddler goes to the stay-and-play, and he loves it there. Very thankful we ended up at the y! I had been a member at plant fitness for a few years and loved the fact you can walk in, do your workout, and hand them ten bucks a month! But when my wife wanted to join and we needed child care during the without, planet didn't make the cut. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful! The childcare (I-zone) is amazing, our daughter asks to go all the time...camps, swimming lessons etc! Well worth the family investment!!! read more

Review update 11/10/17 I love a gym that has daycare for the kids while you workout. They provide 2 hours which is amazing! The stay and play staff are amazing and so good with my kids. We have been coming to the ymca for almost a year now. They even watch new babies as well. The equipment and toys in the daycare area are a bit outdated is the only downfall. The staff here at the ymca is what makes this place the best! read more

clean, Friendly staff. offers many different classes. My children even enjoy going, there's something for everyone!

This is a great Y. Lots of classes and great equipment. Helpful staff. The kids enjoy the interactive zone and child watch.

5 bucks a day for guests in town. Limit 14 days a year. Basketball court is only a half court with a hoop on the side. Everythings in good shape and clean. Worth it. read more

I love this place. Many activities for kids allowing parents to enjoy their time.

We were sooo excited to sign our 4yr old up for her first round of T-Ball. We bought her a mit, bat, cleats and helmet (even though she only needed a mit and helmet). We unfortunately learned real quick that there is no coaching whatsoever. They basically push it on the parents to do the coaching. There is no guidance for the kids at all. I'm sooo disappointed and unsure for what I paid for. For her most recent practice we showed up early and no coaches and no equipment were in the field. We waited to the designated practice time and still nothing. I went into the Y and asked what was going on, explaining that there were no coaches and no equipment. I was told they would bring the equipment out and come and pick it up in 45min....ummm what?!?! One coach showed up 20min into our so called practice time. I mean I understand that these kids are little but shouldn't you be coaching them and teaching them how this game is played? What a joke! We will never pay for another sport through the Y. I'm soo sad for my daughter's first experience at t-ball read more

my nine year old daughter is currently enrolled in the swimming lessons offered for her age group Monday through Thursday 9:05am to 9:35am. the pool instructor amazing and she enjoyed the classes and wanted to continue going until the two older ladies they have working the front desk when you come in to the building were extremely rude. my eldest daughter was taking my youngest daughter to the classes. Monday was fine, Tuesday my eldest daughter had a crop top on and they asked if she could cover up her body with my daughters towel or get a jacket because it was not appropriate, my daughter used the towel to cover up because she did not have a jacket with her on a 100 degree day, any ways that was fine. my issue is the following day they go and my oldest daughter is dressed the "appropriate according to them" but as she walks in with my youngest daughter and proceeds to sign in the guest book the older ladies begin snickering, do not greet or speak to my oldest daughter and then one women comes from behind the counter bends down to my 9 year old daughters face and tells her she is dressed inappropriate and that she needs to cover her self up even though she walked in with the same bathing suit she has worn all week with a towel over her shoulders to just walk immediately in to the locker room to the pool. again same bathing suit all week, my older daughter was respectful and covered up when she was asked and covered up the next day and yet these older ladies thought it was funny and to get into a 9 year old little girls face who has been dressed the same way all week to embarrass her, sexualize and demine her and make her uncomfortable with something she was originally enjoying. they should have said something the first day to an adult that was with her instead of waiting and getting into her face. that was rude and disgusting of them and because of their ridiculous behavior my daughter will not be returning to swim lessons at this gym even though the instructor was amazing and she was learning and having fun. so thank you for taking that away from her! read more

Horrible Staff in a nice new building. I love the Y and I almost bought a house really close to this one so I thought I'd go check it out. it looked great but the staff turned me off so much that I didn't buy the house! I have 3 kids. two in the Interactive zone and one in the nursery. the I zone was blaring music so loud that my kids had their hands over their ears. they hid in the corner while older kids went crazy. the staff was playing video games and not watching the kids at all. IN the nursery one of the two ladies was on the phone the entire time while a few of the babies screamed and cried. when I went to pick up my baby, all i did was point and she picked up my son and handed him over. I asked about checking his sticker and she said i could just throw it out for her. the manager eric was completely disgusting as well. i asked for a tour and by the end I felt like i had been violated. he wouldn't stop looking at my chest kept getting super close to me. I actually asked him if he had a problem with his eyes it was so often.. and no.. I'm not stacked .. and yes, I was completely covered! I would not feel safe taking my kids here again. read more

I'm visiting family in Chesapeake & was very happy to see that there's a Y nearby. I'm not a member but my niece is. I called to ask info & was hold that I can come in, sign a guest form & be sure to bring an ID. I went today (June 30, 2014) eager to attend the 1030-1130am Zumba class. The lady at the front desk said that I need to have a member be with me. I told her that that wasn't mentioned to me when I called and if it's possible that I'll call my niece so she can vouch for me over the phone. The front desk staff showed that she was irritated and bluntly said, "No!" I did not want to bend their rules so I said OK & I asked if I could use the restroom while I wait for my husband to pick me up. She rolled her eyes and very rudely pointed me to the restroom. WOW! I was really shocked by her attitude & lack of hospitality! I hope other out-of-town guests will be treated more courteously & with more respect. read more
