I love Tatty Devine's characterful little shop although I must confess I've never bought anything from it. Not a sausage. Not a name necklace. Not a plectrum pendant. Nothing. Located on a part of Brick Lane I wouldn't identify as Brick Lane proper, Tatty Devine's colourful boutique is as quirky as its jewellery, with a fine selection of the duo's signature pieces in pop cultural perspex and rendered out of zips and chains. With Tatty Devine's name necklaces and bow-tie rings reaching cult status, the duo's designs are firmly established within the British contemporary jewellery lexicon and will quite possibly be collectible in years to come. And with the Brick Lane boutique stocking not just jewellery but outstanding magazines such as Amelia's - ok, I'm biased, I write for them - Tatty Devine's shop is definitely worth a visit. Tatty Devine walks the wafer thin line of Shoreditch Cool and Shoreditch Twattery. Thankfully, it manages to stay on this side of Cool. Located on end of Brick Lane that gets a lot less visitors (because it is over the road from Bethnal Green Road, fact finders), Tatty is worth a visit even if you don't walk out with anything from here. I think that Tatty Devine's reputation has been slightly sullied by the subsequent Shoreditch arty/clever/in joke shops which have sprung up around it. It was one of the first, and is still very innovative. There is a great range of jewellery here, like nothing that you will have seen in London shops before. They also collaborate with artists for their products - for example, Gilbert and George designed a range of jewellery for them. They are not particularly expensive, and could definitely be considered investment pieces. The last time that I was here, there was a pre-Christmas party going on. A DJ was on the decks. (Taking it close to Shoreditch twattery again), but I felt it redeemed itself when I brought some prints by the artist Robert Ryan (who has his shop nearby in Columbia Road). Normally his artwork sells for hundreds of pounds, but I brought one of his prints here for a crisp five pound note, and signed by the man himself! (who happened to be standing behind the counter). Tatty Devine has definitely managed to make a great name for itself. The shop is aptly quirky and attractive with lots of colourful 'plastique fantastique' jewelry. With a lot of pink items, plectrum necklaces, quirky shaped earrings and other pop-inspired accessories it is the perfect shop for the contemporary girlie girls out there. Unfortunately, that's not me. I do enjoy the shop a lot and I find it cute and all, but with a rather personal classic taste in jewelry, mainly consisting of gold, silver and the occasional pearls, I could never picture myself wearing any of this plastic 'stuff'. In fact, I hardly wear jewelry at all. It is a very useful store for prezzies and a look-see, but other than that I shall not be buying anything from here anytime soon. I LOVE Tatty Devine!!! So when I was down visiting a friend one of the only things I wanted to do was to to Brick Lane and visit the tatty store. Me and my friend wandered up Brick Lane and we ended up at what we thought was the end of the road as all the shops and cafes stopped but we headed in a little further and there she was.. The most beautiful sight to any mad tatty devine store. This was the original store but they now have one in covent garden and inside Selfridges. The store is small but all the jewellery is displayed well. I was so excited to finally be there that I couldn't choose what I wanted, my friend tried to help and asked me to narrow it down, she gave up when I narrowed it done to about 20 pieces.. Eventually I bought the volume badge. It was lovely to see all the pieces in the flesh rather than on a computer screen. Staff were lovely and helpful.. It really was an amazing visit. read more

Sorry - they look so cool but they really aren't as good as their prices... I ordered my name - the first chain tarnished almost immediately, the second chain broke very quickly, I then paid extra for a silver chain (which given how cheap they can be bought I think they should come with as standard). This was not properly fitted and the link wasn't closed properly. In all cases I was not treated with as much courtesy as I would have hoped from a retailer who had sold me something defective. Although I did think I would never go there again, my daughter really wanted her name - and that arrived misspelled. If I am paying the best part of £50 for a necklace it should be a bit tougher and really they should be nicer to their customers. read more

Tatty Devine is great and this branch is delightful. I had a snoop around here lately after filling myself with some of the sweets from the shop across the street. The sales assistant was so lovely and chatted to me for ages about the jewellery among other things. Kookie, plastic kitch at it's best. Tatty do some fab costume jewellery and the shop's a great visit. You'll want to take it all home. Pieces are resonably priced and it's a great place to get a gift for a friend or something to re-vamp an old outfit as everyone's going to be commenting on your new necklace to notice you're wearing the same dress as 3 weeks ago. Never has perspex been so appealing. I think once you discover Tatty Devine it's normal to develop an unhealthy obsession with all their quirky and unique jewellery. Drawbacks of going into their East End branch is that you'll want to leave with absolutely everything. From their trademark plectrum jewellery, personalised name necklaces and constant introduction of new designs you'll be in love. They are a little pricey for what is essentially just plastic but the cute designs will have you enraptured and make excellent girly gifts. read more

God this jewellery is amazing . Really puts a smile on everyones face when I wear my moustache necklace. But a big let down on quality. The silver chain turned copper on me and keeps snapping and this isn't a once off as this is the third one I've had. I do keep going back cause the designs are that good. read more
