All three of my tattoos have been done by Guf. My first two were done a long time ago, back when Guf was still at Ace Tattoo. My most recent was done at Tattoo Royale. For all three of my tattoos, I went to Guf with a very vague idea of what I wanted. He worked with me to draw up something that turned out to be better than what I had imagined. He continued working with me to make slight tweaks, right up to the point when he turned the needle on. *gulp* I have three tattoos, but still, the sound of that needle sets my heart to racing. Guf really is very talented. His artistic ability is undeniable, and his ability to take your idea and turn it into something you're proud to display is one of the reasons I go back to him over and over. My husband has gotten one tattoo from Guf, and one (huge!) one from Droopy. He was going to go to Guf again, but after seeing Droopy's work, decided that he'd be the best artist for this particular tattoo. Both Droopy and Milton are also very talented (neither of us have gone to Milton yet, but I've seen his work over the many visits to the shop, and he's good, too!) The guys are friendly and take the time to make sure the tattoo is right. Plus, they've got good taste in music, which is nice when you're in the shop for a couple hours at a time. ;) Parking can be a huge bitch, since it's street parking, but we've never had a problem. I've had to go out and move the car up or back in inch or two to bust up the markings on my tire, but that's about the worst of it. read more

My wife and I were visiting San Diego from out of state. We searched for tattoo shops around the area and this shop was one of the few that had high ratings. I booked a free consultation online and met with the artist Droopy. We asked if we could be squeezed in same say which Droopy made it a point to help us out. i have been following Guf's work since his days at Ace ...he is one of the most reputable tattoo artists in SD. Guf is professional, listens to what you want and executes beyond expectations! there have been times that (i have been to other artists and i just felt as if they were creepy)...not here. I recently went in to Tattoo Royale for my latest tattoo. I brought in a general idea of what I wanted and Droopy did the rest! When I came in for the appointment the drawing was exactly what I wanted and yet couldn't articulate. It was incredible! My sitting was a little over two hours and I am beyond pleased with the end result. It was my third tattoo and it is by far my favorite. I receive tons of compliments on it. Wanted to find a place for my first tattoo and Tattoo Royale was recommended to me by a friend and they definitely delivered. Met with Milton on Wednesday to discuss my design briefly and schedule an appointment. Walked in Sunday nervous but the atmosphere and Milton answering any of my questions helped calm the nerves. We went over sketches and revisions (sorry Milton) and finally settled on design, size, and placement. After everything was done, Milton gave me an aftercare directional sheet which I greatly appreciated, since I had no idea what I was doing. Truly professional service. I've been coming here since the place opened. Before that, I was getting tattooed by Guf, the owner, for several years. The quality of the artwork and tattoo work coming out of this shop is unparalleled. There are three artists working and they are the same artists who have been here since the doors first opened. All three artists are extremely talented as will become evident when you notice all of the paintings, sculptures, custom resin castings and airbrushed pieces that are on display, among other things (people make special trips to come admire and purchase these items as well). The only complaint i have is that everywhere i go i have to stop and let people check out my arm and make small talk with them and explain what my tattoos mean to me. Amazing! My friend and I went in here for tattoos over Thanksgiving weekend. We called the day before to make an appointment and had no trouble scheduling it. I got a small music note behind my ear from Milton and my friend got a doodle I created from Guf. Both guys couldn't have been nicer or better about explaining things. Milton for president! My husband had some work done by Milton and when it came time for me to FINALLY get my coverup this is where I went. I had an idea in my mind of what I wanted and took in some pictures to Milton that I thought represented my vision. At my consultation Milton seemed like he understood what I wanted, but said he would sketch up something and call me to come see if I liked it. I left there thinking I'd have to come in a few times until we got it the way I wanted my tattoo to look. WRONG! Milton got that shit on the first try! My husband and I were in awe at his sketch. How did he do that? I will never know. Anyways, a few sessions later and my old tattoo is gone and I now I have an art piece that I am beyond proud to wear. I cannot recommend this place enough. There are a lot of tattoo places to choose from in San Diego, but it's hard to imagine there are better ones than Tattoo Royle and Guf out there. I brought some blurry photos to Guf, explained my vague idea, and left the rest to Guf. The result is beyond expectation. In guf/Tattoo Royale I found professional expertise, artistic sensibility, great attitude, as well as a reasonable price. Guf takes great pride in his work and is such a perfectionist. I got some letters and a portrait done. There was very little bleeding. The letters are beautiful and crisp, and the portrait--let's just say it was mesmerizing to watch him work, blending different colors, putting in shadows, highlights--it was like watching it coming alive. read more

Guf is fantastic!! Honestly, I can't say enough good thngs about him. I had an existing tattoo on my side, that i just wasn't as excited about as i used to be. I didn't have any ideas on what i wanted to do to spice it up, and he said ok, lets see what i come up with. He drew out a couple of ideas, and i told him what i liked about each one and he took what i liked and pieced them all together. The day of my apt. he drew it out on my side and we started. I was referred to Guf through family friends... he is such a great artist! I e-mailed him a few pictures of some ideas I had and he drew something up for me. He has such a gentle hand and is so professional. Since my tat is over my rib area, he cut up a brand new t-shirt he had their in the shop and had me wear it so I wouldn't "expose" myself. It took about 2 1/2 hours for him to finish the tat but he let me get up and stretch a couple times since I had to be in the same position the whole time. Tip: Book your appointment well in advance because they are always very busy. read more

Guf is a great artist. I brought him a drawing I had made that I wanted him to alter (make better) and then do on the back of my neck. I absolutely love my tattoo, and the color is quite vibrant. DROOPY IS A TRUE PROFESSIONAL AND GREAT ARTIST. Shopped around for my first tattoo in Aug. 2009. I'm 40 and a professional, so I was looking for something outside the norm. Settled on a bunny on an old-fashioned pennyfarth bike. One artist pretty much looked at me like I was stupid. Another said 'sure man' but couldn't get the sketch down - wasn't even close. Droopy listened to what I wanted and nailed it the first time. I was nervous about doing it but finally said WTF and there I was, in Droopy's chair. He completed the tat quickly and absolutely nailed the design I was looking for, including subtle effects like the eyes and intricate shading. He was cooperative and collaborative on the pre-ink iterations. I HIGHLY recommend Tattoo Royale, and especially Droopy, to anyone looking for an excellent tattoo. read more

This is the 6th shop I've been tattooed at in PB and by far the best. I heard about Droopy a while back and decided to have him work my sleeve. He worked great with my ideas and also suggested things I would never have thought of. He made the rest of my arm match perfectly with my upper sleeve which I already had.
