The store is much larger than expected. My husband and I are into anime so we loved walking the store and seeing all the collectibles. They have a small upstairs where they have art and handmade niknacks which were really cool. They also have a card/gaming area next door. Let me just summarize it by saying: "God, I love this place." Where do I begin? Comic books, action figures, collectibles... There is just so much stuff. I mean, this place is huge. Any graphic novel you can think of. They have an entire area dedicated to Star Wars. If you collect Funkos or Kidrobots or any pop-culture licensed toys from Lucas Films, Marvel, Hasbro, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Dr Who, DC Comics, Disney, etc... Not to mention vintage action figures, something that is really hard to come by on a brick and mortar store. Plus, they sell a lot of manga stuff, if you are into that. I visited Tate's Comics a few days ago and met with Tony as I was interested in selling my 1000 plus comic book collection. Tony was so incredibly rude and unprofessional it was unreal. Everything was a problem for him from the start. He is unprofessional in every way imaginable. He had no clue what he was doing and offered basically nothing for my collection. I would throw my collection in the garbage before I would sell them to him. He is an embarrassment to this establishment and should be fired. If he is an owner or partner, then he should be bought out as he is hurting their business more than they know. My experience with Tony was quite frankly as bad as it gets and he does not understand customer service at all. Do yourself a favor and never do business with Tony as you will have a bad experience and completely waste your time. read more

Random homeless deaf guy began running around the comic shop while my husband and I were browsing, walking up to people with his cane, Trump 2020 fanny pack and cards reading "I am deaf. Sorry to bother you. Will you buy this card and help me?" I obviously said no and he snatched the card from my hand (isn't he supposed to be deaf?), and goes up to every single person in the store browsing and then leaves. Once I went to the register, I asked the employee if that was normal. She barely cared. I asked if solicitation of guests is normal? And she just shrugged. Others in line agreed with me how it made them nervous and so off guard. It freaked me out. But the fact the staff didn't tell him to leave and let him run around scaring people really turned me off. I also asked the same girl behind the counter to show me where a specific item was and she didn't care. She just sighed and pointed in it's direction. Overall... not cool experience. I was in town for the weekend and ended up going to another comic shop in West Palm and bought a Sideshow figurine for $300.... the guy was a lot nicer and calmer and actually appreciated my business compared to this comic shop. Tate's is an amazing store for all things comic and beyond! It is located in an older plaza on University, and there is plenty of parking. I find it easy to get distracted by the many sections of collectibles, unique finds, well organized comic books, and graphic novels. This store is for kids of all ages, even those that pay a mortgage. There are do many great finds and many items at fair prices, but I do recommend comparison shopping, and know what certain toys or collectibles go for. For example, my sons love Necca figures, and those are priced fairly and about the same as I have found at any store. However, my youngest son is a fan of Marvel Legends, and they are sometimes almost doubled in price from Target or Amazon for the same figure. That is really the only downside, the pricing, which can be a bit out of sorts. Even so, it is a store one could easily spend a couple hours in. I've been to the store before and have never been asked to leave my bag in the car or at the register.... Went today and was browsing for about 30 minutes and no employee mentioned anything about my purse. Walked out for a few minutes to use the bathroom next door then walked back in to go meet my boyfriend who was holding out basket and was told by the employee at the counter I had to either leave my purse (with all my belongings inside) with complete strangers at be register or leave it in the car. Was told this in front of a bunch of other customers who also had purses around the same size as mine and they were not told anything about their bags. If you're going to do something like this then be consistent and tell everyone who has a bag they can't come in. Don't pick and choose who you want to tell. I was going to buy an art print I really liked and that completely turned me off from giving them my business and ended up having my boyfriend put it back. I understand they want to prevent shoplifting but maybe hire someone to deal with loss prevention rather than targeting certain people who have bags... I won't be returning there unfortunately. read more

I have been to Tate's many times over the years but this last weekend we had an extremely annoying experience that soured my impressions. Tate's was holding their snack tasting event which I had been to before but my friend and I were just interested in shopping around. At the front of the store was a very nice employee holding the door open, and behind him was a red headed employee who as soon as we walked in was yelling at customers. It was pretty startling and awkward. We quickly made our way to the back of the store to shop so that we didn't have to be around the her rude shouting. After about a minute this same woman began SCREAMING over the store intercom. My friends children were very upset and had to cover their ears until the screaming stopped. Everyone around me was also visibly disgusted with the volume. The blaring intercom came again every minute or two so we decided to leave. While leaving, the red headed employee was again yelling at customers at the front and telling them how to be courteous to those around you, which we found hilarious considering the her demeanor. I think people know how to say excuse me without being yelled like we are misbehaving children. Overall our experience yesterday was ruined and we left before buying anything. One employee at the front door explaining where to get tickets would have sufficed. And someone with better training and a calmer demeanor for the intercom would be very appreciated. I'll be back and I hope to update my review with a more positive experience in the future. read more

Went yesterday 20 minutes before closing because I live in Miramar, definitely worth the drive. I saw in a video they had jellycats & had to see them! On the outside, looks kinda small so I wasnt expecting a giant place. But when you entered, its like a giant library in there! Super organized, prices are shown clearly & packaged extremely nice. Sad I missed out on a certain jellycat I was looking for but scored some others! Employees were super nice also! Would recommend coming here, the atmosphere is so chill. read more

I've given the store multiple chances in regard to customer service. The store has terrible customer service. On my first visit while taking in the store, I stopped to read for one moment where ome of the staff rudely told me that I can't just read all day amd I have to buy and walked off. Against better judgement I came by on other occasions each visit with varying attitudes, sometimes unwelcoming, other times ok. Last time I was there, a staff member condescendingly told me where the restroom was after I had asked him (they happened to block the restroom in the store). He was very rude as if the question I asked should have been very obvious despite the peculir directions he gave me to go to their other store located two doors down. At this point I was tired of the accumulation of rude or snobby interactions that I've taken from the staff. After that, I put down the overlypriced $50 dollar book that I was going to buy and instead bought it on Amazon for $27. Why go out of my way and drive all the way to support a local business at the expense of terrible customer service with exhorbitantly higher prices. I am familiar with Tate's because they either sponsor or have a booth at all of the local comic cons. In addition to supporting outside events they also hold special events at the store. The store is geek paradise. In addition to comics of course they carry collectibles, shirts, graphic novels, Japanese toys and snacks, funko vinyl dolls, and more. If you have a fandom they have you covered. I was hoping to get some items to go with a costume but that seemed to be the one thing they didn't carry. Even if you don't buy anything it is still a treat to look around. If money was no object I would have cleared out the Aliens and Predator case of art figures for my daughter as well as the Predator helmet. I also loved the full size Han Solo in carbonite. You can purchase a lot of fan items online but it is nice to have a brick and mortar store especially one like this that supports the comic con and anime loving community. read more

Really one of the coolest places in South Florida and quite possibly the bests comic book shop in the world. Tate's really has stood the test of time and seen expansions, changes, reboots and new location but the classic store is still where all of the geeky goodness thrives. Tate's is really the one stop destination for nerds of comics, Starwars, 80's nostalgia, nerd art, vinyl figures, Japanese candy and much much more. I challenge anyone to find me a comic bookstore that has as much of a variety of comics, I seriously think they may have had every comic issue, series or volume in that building at one point in time. From Superman, to Deadpool, Watchmen and even hipster stuff like Sweet Tooth, American Virgin and Crossed (don't look up that last one please, I am just surprised they have it). All of which are in great condition and organized in a manner where you could find the comic you are looking for if you look hard enough, and who knows you may stumble upon a new book or comic you never heard of. Lot of cool memories in this place, really for me the joy is explaining this place to a friend and then taking them there to see the shock on there face and talk endlessly about nerd pop culture. The staff is really cool but make no mistake they are not about to deal with your BS, so please put things back where you found them and do not damage the goods. The events they throw are also a blast, my favorite being Comic Book day and "Not a Comic Con". This is a great opportunity to see the creative cosplay as well as meet some local die hard comic book fans. Everything comes at a cost and Tate's charges a bit more than your average shop but the experience is way worth it. read more

Star Wars, Power Rangers, Marvel, DC, they have everything you could want. Toys, figures, books, graphic novels and of course comics. They have TONS of back issues and the newest releases as well. Tates's is pretty much the only place I go to when I'm looking for anything comic related- especially if I'm looking for that perfect gift to find someone who love comics (DC/Marvel), manga, Dr. Who, or really anything in the realm of fantasy and comics. The place kind of goes on forever. The first section is filled with various types of toys including some Funko toys that everyone loves. The back wall is lined with various Chinese candies. You can find various art including statues of your favorite heroes for sale. Old toys from the 80's and 90's for sale and they are well organized and sectioned off. I love their book selection. From learning how to draw a cartoon character to learning about the artists who have made these characters come to life. Even books about your favorite heroes. Last but not least is the enormous comic selection which includes tons of graphic novels. You can spend hours upon hours combing through the titles looking for that one special comic that you just have to have. The pricing here isn't too bad. Some thing yes I think are over-priced, but overall, I don't think the pricing is bad at all. The staff is super friendly and willing to answer your questions. Checked out some really far out and vintage Justice League figures. They also had the coolest Star Wars tees, kids books and totes collection. So much more, looking for japanese anime, you say? I have been a customer of Tate's since Tate and his son ran the store I think way back in the very late 90's. This is a sad day for me to write this but I have to share my experience. We all work hard and I go to Tate's only when I intend to spend an adequate amount of money. Anywhere from $40 to $1000. I have been buying every The Walking Dead graphic novel since it came out on day one just to give you an idea on how much I HAVE spent. I had my one day off and went into Tate's after being just plain old busy for months to follow up on my favorite titles. That is a guaranteed purchase of $80. I decided to check NEW titles to add to my collection. As I was doing so I was told I cannot sit down. Ok. I took the thin 3$ issue of what I was reading to see if it was worth buying the entire collection and placed it on a table and stood to read. I was told I can flip through but not read the comics by the same guy. This is the same guy whom while I was searching for titles was watching and blasting some very profane video on his phone. I only once asked him a question about a title. He did not seem thrilled to be bothered. Fair enough. When I finally went to the counter to complete my purchase I asked about this "No reading policy" to the young man taking my money and he did not seem aware of such a thing. I was going to leave it at that but then a young lady in glasses quickly quipped with quite a tone that "They are not a library" and something else. The young man taking my money remained silent and smiled. I replied as I walked out that "It was a question and not a compliant". Well, now it is. I am now aware that Tate's comic's culture in customer service has certainly changed over the years and I will know better than to do anything buy throw my money at the staff as clearly they are not there to do much else. Very disappointing as this was once a haven. I miss Tate. No more to be said. read more

I've been a loyal Tate's customer since I was in middle school, back at their first store location when the place was barely bigger than my first college dorm. I came there for the fansubbed VHS anime videos and imported Japanese snacks and figures that I couldn't find anywhere else outside of anime conventions or on eBay. I've since watched both myself and Tate's grow...they moved to a bigger store, expanded 3x, built two spinoffs (Bird and Bear and the Gaming Satellite), I graduated High School, then got a BA, and now a Master's, and I still go to Tate's whenever I can. I ended up at college 4 hours away, but visits home still always consisted of a visit to Tate's, even if there wasn't anything in particular I wanted. Tate's is a family store, and by that I mean not only is it family run, but everyone who goes there is treated as if they were a part of the Tate's family. Anyone can go there and enjoy themselves, babies to the elderly, and they're even pet-friendly...it's a breath of fresh air to walk into a comic/collectible shop and not feel like an outsider. Too often do I feel alienated in a new shop because I'm not 'one of them' and not as hardcore of a fan of all things comics - this is never the case at Tate's. The staff makes you feel welcome, and they know their game, whether it's Star Wars, anime, golden age comics, pulp art. The selection is amazing, and if they don't have it, they can almost always order it for you and put it aside. The prices for imported goods are standard, not cheap but not too drastically hiked up either. They're great supporters of local artists, too, between their indie comic rack, the store's decor, and the gallery/boutique upstairs. I know if I ever have kids, I'm making sure they get to see where Mom grew up and collected 80% of all her nerdy desk gear. :) read more

Probably my favourite place to go here in SoFL I lost about 95% of my comic books (late 80s-2004, mostly Image, Marvel X-titles, Top Cow, and Vertigo) in a storage unit that flooded in Hurricane Katrina in NOLA, and I've been slowly trying to recreate and expand my collection over the past several years. Tate's has been invaluable in helping me to accomplish this gargantuan task. They also have so many fun collectibles! The prices tend to be very fair and the selection is excellent. Also, the staff are some of the greatest people I've met since moving down here. They REALLY know their stuff, and if you tell them your interests they're able to easily direct you to other titles (and/or other cool stuff) that you're probably going to love. The only problem is that they have so much amazing stuff that I can easily spend 2+ hours browsing at a time! read more

I wrote a review for Tate's years ago and just wanted to update. This store is an awesome wonderland! Even while this pandemic is going it it's still great. I know their some of the staff has changed since the pandemic. It hasn't changed how great the store is. Maybe it's better. The 1 employee that caused people to write bad reviews is no longer there. It's wonderful. We went last weekend. We were greeted kindly by the mask wearing employees behind the counter. When you walk in you should walk straight ahead and leave the registers clear, for social distancing. Maybe some areas aren't as full as they used to be, ie the snack section, but I can't complain because "Covid!" I'm sure if there was something you wanted in particular and you told them, they would order. The store is very clean and organized. I'm pretty sure you can order stuff over the phone and someone would bring out to you. They are posting new stuff on Instagram and Facebook daily. The upstairs boutique, bearandbird.com is still going strong. They have a second boutique located in NY and all the website orders ship from there. Tate's wife Amanda personally picks and ships those orders. I've ordered and gotten great stuff. Shipping is super reasonable and comes fast. The store is also selling masks that Amanda designed herself. They are super soft and cute in great unisex designs. The few dollars you'd save at Amazon isn't worth missing out on this great piece of Florida history. GO GO GO! read more

Actually this Comic store is a warehouse of collectible items, comics books and memorabilia of old school characters and cartoons. I would plan on spending a few hours here if you really want a good experience of every inch of this place. They have old school collectibles from the 80s generation of Voltron, GI Joe, Transformer, Thundercat and Original Star Wars. The Star Wars section was filled with amazing collectible figurines and toys. I have a family member that is a Star Wars junky and I know he would love this area. You have you anime, which has a whole section of good reads and figurines. POP collectibles, oh my! They have walls on walls of this, from Disney, MARVEL, TV shows and much more. They even had Save by the Bell POP collectibles! The comic book section and collections are insane! They have rows on rows of different series and volumes. They even have binders and sleeves to put your comic book and keeping it brand new. In the middle of the store they have this humongous Hulk staring at you while you shop, I thought it made this store more awesome!
