It's rare that I get a real craving for Chinese. I think the last time I ate it was in yum cha form a few years ago, and prior to that it was likely at my mum's place out in the country where Chinese is about the only "nice" takeaway food you can get. But for some reason a few weeks ago I was exhausted and desperate for some sweet and sour pork. I remembered a colleague giving a good review for Old Peking in passing, and so I crossed my fingers and ordered the classics: the pork I was craving, chicken with cashew nuts, and special fried rice. The service was quick and friendly and a bag of prawn crackers was thrown in as thanks. I got home, doled a bit of everything into a big ol' bowl, and proceded to EAT SOME OF THE BEST CHINESE I'VE HAD IN MY LIFE. The rice was fine--it had all the bits in it to make it special and even had some sauce drizzled on top--but the meat dishes were where it was at. Fresh vegetables just past crunch factor, delicious meat, and just enough sauce (nothing was swimming therefore nothing was soggy, but enough for the rice to soak up a bit of the flavour). Honestly, the vegies were the highlight for me. I hunted the last bits of carrots and broccoli from the chicken dish, I wept when the onion was finished in the pork dish. I've been back twice since. I'll be back twice as often before the year's out. I'm hooked! Plus the food is always ready SO QUICKLY (10-15mins), the staff are lovely, and the takeaway boxes come with hand-drawn smiley faces on them to accompany the descriptions. I'm not sure when I last saw food so happy to see me. Old Peking, you are my jam. Thank you for reminding me that takeaway Chinese is totally an option always worth considering. The menu had all the Malaysian food we were familiar with. Orders were placed and paid for at the cashier in the front. Tap water, utensils and napkins were self serve at the front. I just got regular and it packed enough heat from the soup for me. However I was expecting more flavors out of this laksa based on past experience. The seafood CKT had a good mix of shrimp, squid, mussels and fish balls but seemed a bit on the smaller side. The smokiness of the wokhei was good and the overall dish had the right amount of oiliness. The roti was disappointing as it seemed overly fried and difficult to pull apart. The side of sauce tasted like the laksa soup but I detected an older oil taste when chewing it. Definitely not one I'd order again. Dishes were cleared by the staff after our meal and the next customer waiting inside quickly took over table. Overall a mixed bag for us.

Xi'AN Dumpling, a Northern Chinese restaurant, sounded perfect. We dropped in on a Friday evening (around 6:45pm). Not many people eating in but there were a lot of mainlanders that came to grab takeout. The inside is a lot nicer than you'd expect for a Northern Chinese spot but it was cold inside (with the AC blasting). The menu is short with 21 items; dumplings, buns/Chinese burgers, cold noodles, handmade/pulled noodles and soup noodles. They also had a picture menu but oddly, it doesn't match up to the regular menu. - Dumplings in hot and sour soup (#3) ($15.00 AUD) - you get twelve homemade dumplings and choose from 7 options. We went with pork shrimp; good amount of filling and excellent texture to the wrapping. The broth was sour and tangy. Yum. - Chinese cumin lamb pork burger (#9 ($8.00 AUD) - this wasn't very good. The bread was dry and bland. Even the meat wasn't tender. Skip it. - Cold noodle with chili oil and mixed sauce (#10) ($12.00 AUD) - came with sliced cucumbers and bean sprouts in a light sesame sauce. We got this dish because they'd already sold out of the traditional cold noodles (#6). A solid portion of noodles; I liked it. Noodles had a good bite. - Biangbiang noodle with sliced beef (spicy) (#16) ($15.00 AUD) - traditional handmade noodles (aka. hand pulled). These were legit! Great bite and texture to the noodles. The spicy sauce was delicious. Only disappointment was the sliced beef; not as good as the norm. Overall, solid spot to get Northern Chinese food in Hobart. Hopefully, you're luckier and get to try the traditional cold noodles.
