We wandered in here on a Wednesday just after noon. The pastry location looked open but no one was at the counter and bullfrog bagels looked closed. We were excited to find an El Salvadoran place inside. We're big pupusa fans and try them everywhere we go! We ordered 4 Revueltas (meat, black beans, and cheese). They were excellent! Made to order so they were very fresh, there was not more breading than filling (which is a common complaint I've found). A local "food court" type setup with not very many stalls. Had a meetup.com event here which was fun. It's always nice to connect with fellow foodies. There were only five of us there but we had fun sharing recommendations, stories and worthwhile restaurants around the area. Taqueria del Barrio and Captain Cookie were the only two businesses staffed so we patronized those. I'd eaten at the Taqueria's full service restaurant in Petworth before during a previous Yelp event so it was nice to reconnect with her food. The Jamaican spot and the bagel spot were closed, unfortunately. I imagine this food hall venue to be a worthwhile addition to the neighborhood, but I think they need more businesses inside (or consistent ones) to really make this place a valued destination. Glad I go to try Captain Cookie if nothing else. I see those food trucks around the city. Cookies were good. I still prefer Mrs Fields though. I have never placed a to go order during a pandemic. It was surreal. I like restaurants, events, tastings and being social. I placed an order on the web site. My confirmation email gave instructions on how to proceed. When we arrived at the building, I sent a text that I had arrived. My description was "Black car, two red bandanas." The employee brought my to go bag out. He offered to put the bag in the trunk. The order was a DIY kit for a Yelp event. Everything was neatly wrapped. My initials were on each plastic spice container. Even the name of each item was labeled. The instructors explained how to prepare the Hawaiian ball. I hope when the world opens back up, we can visit here in person. read more

On the outside, Tastemakers feels like a miniature Union Market. On the inside, it's a food hall with a mission. It's goal is to provide a state of the art commercial kitchen for food start ups in Washington, D.C. to use to launch their businesses. Located in Brookland, it's one of the food destinations in NE DC and only a 10 minute drive from fun NW neighborhoods like Shaw. It's a large building housing a handful of stands. There's bagels at Bullfrog, ice cream at Captain Cookie, meatballs at Balls. There's a coffee shop, a bar in the back, and a few other businesses. There are plenty of seats (with Trivia Pursuit cards on them for conversation starters). If it's nice outside, there's a lawn in the front. If you want a new, unique food experience in DC, head up to Brookland. read more

I am so bummed! I was hoping this could be a new go-to in our neighborhood, but it's a bit of a let down. I was initially happy to hear from the owner that they were going to fix the stroller/ wheel chair unfriendly entrance, but they still haven't! That aside, the vendors were not really looking to have people order from them, very disappointing. There also wasn't much of a selection for for dinner, just the meatball place, the cheesesteak place and the taco place. I was sad to see the vegan "healthy" spot is gone. This review is based primarily with my experience with the Jamaican spot. About 5 of us settled on that one and we all enjoyed it. The food was prepared fresh and it took a few minutes, but she brought each plate out when they were ready. The mains are great because you can choose any two sides. I chose the mild curry chicken with the plantains and mac & cheese. I love plantains normally, but these were amaaazing. The mac & cheese was also bomb, and it was a generous portion. Overall, a plate is very filling and you could definitely share it if you're not ravenous (or want to save room for Captain Cookie). The chicken was also flavorful. If you have a low spice tolerance, make sure you specify that you want your meal mild. My friend had a 'spicy' chicken and it was a little too much for her to handle. read more

Walking through Brookland, we passed Tastemakers and realized it was a "new-ish" food hall. These have been popping up all around Baltimore, NY and other cities so I was wondering when another one besides Union Market would open up. Though I love the idea of this kind of food hall in a cozy residential neighborhood like Brookland, Tastemakers is a bit tight on space. I thought it was a little odd that half of the vendors are closed during some of the weekdays, really leaving one other option to eat. I tried the ice cream sandwich from Captain Cookie and the Milk Man. You can customize the ice cream sandwich with any cookie and up to any two flavors of ice cream. I ordered mine with the oatmeal raisin cookie, chocolate chip cookie, raspberry brownie ice cream, and coffee cookies and cream ice cream. The first few bites of this was so good, but the more I ate it, the sweeter it got. I think this would be the perfect size for two or three people to share just to avoid a crazy sugar rush/after effects of a headache. read more

This review is for Bullfrog Bagels. The service was quite slow on both occasions that I placed an order. The first time, it took 10 minutes to order half a dozen bagels and a medium cream cheese. On the second occasion, despite ordering ahead, it took more than 30 minutes for my order to arrive after it was placed. I understand that the pandemic has complicated things for vendors, which is why I am not giving a lower ranking. However, I think on both occasions the delay was at least partly to blame on poor customer service. read more

Tastemakers is a space with a lot of promise, however it has not quite delivered. I've stopped by Tastemakers a few times including its grand opening. The space lacks some of the qualities of other food halls in the area for instance, eating space and more unique food options. I've also tried to stop by in the evenings when the website says the vendors should be open...and they aren't. So disappointing! I've tried two vendors. Bullfrog bagels is decent albeit a bit pricey when you add cream cheese on your bagel. The Mexican place lacks the flavors of other tacos spots around DC. The Brookland/Edgewood area is perfect for this time of space but I think changes need to be made. More diverse vendors. Adherence to scheduled hours. More seating. So I tried this place for a soft opening which was a couple of days before the grand opening. My first impressions were there were a nice variety of vendors which was great. There was a cookie then there is soon as you walk in, a taco vendor, a bagel vendor, and then a vegan vendor. Across from that was the Steakholders, which was a cheesesteak shop. Next to the cheesesteak business was an Italian establishment, however they didn't have full meals. The meals at the Italian place were full however they weren't traditional. I didn't notice pasta however you can order 'balls', and order a side or two which included Brussels sprouts, salad, and a couple of other items. It seems like a cool concept but not your traditional Italian as I was expecting. In the back was a bar which seemed to have a variety of options, it was pretty full. Overall I did not try as many items as I would have liked due to the volume of folks in the small space. The space was not large enough to accommodate the amount of people that were in attendance. I definitely will give this place another try. I'll probably visit again after the grand opening. Eventually many people will want to congregate there. I'm sure once it warms up maybe that they will probably put out tables and chairs which would be a good idea. The area is definitely such that people in the neighborhood would want to come hang out there, try the food and things like that. I'm giving this place 4 because I think it was a great idea to put something in that space. I've been over that way several times at the brewery in the area, as well as to do other business. It is great to have more food options in the neighborhood and although it is only street parking I did not have an issue finding a spot. I can't wait to see what becomes of the establishment. This is based off two experiences at Tastemakers - one dining at Bullfrog, one dining at Taqueria del Barrio. Bullfrog - Bullfrog is great, some of the best bagels I've found in the city. If you're in the neighborhood, certainly a worthwhile place to grab a bagel sandwich. Taqueria del Barrio - Went to grab some dinner there last night and was not at all impressed with this place. I haven't been to their other establishment which looks like it gets good reviews, but I had a pork bowl that was dry with huge chunks of pork. My fiance had 3 tacos that were so depressingly underfilled that the experience was like eating a wet tortilla. Not much variety in the menu, nothing special about the flavors, and very little value. Would not recommend. Tastemakers on the whole - I love the idea of TM and that there's something like it in Brookland, but it needs improving. The space is claustrophobic - on a Saturday morning with a long line at Bullfrog, there's not much room to maneuver, particularly considering the space is often filled with wandering toddlers and strollers. There's little natural light in the space. My fiance and I briefly considered grabbing a table after ordering our food at Taqueria del Barrio, but the atmosphere - the sounds of crying children, harsh lighting, and zero music - gave us little reason to. read more

We have a 10 month old baby and we're looking for some place quick, easy, tasty, and close. This fit the bill perfectly. We went for an early dinner (5:30pm) and it was quiet. By the time we left there were a bit more people. Everyone was incredibly friendly and welcoming. The oxtail and plantains from the Jamaican Jerk place were amazing and generous portions. The guacamole from the OMG Latin place was very good and made to order. The cocktails were very good (although pricey at $12/each) and the bartender was so friendly and no one minded our baby one bit. We got cookies to go too. Knocked it down a star only because i think the vendors could put a little more effort into their displays to make it a bit easier to tell who's open, what the options are, etc. but we will definitely be back. read more

The Food: There are definitely some pretty solid spots for food in here. I recommend Alchemist Coffee (great nitro coffee), Ball or Nothing (get the mac and brussel sprouts), Urban Fusion (filipino and ethiopian fusion with great squash sauce), and Captain Cookie (edible cookie dough and ice cream sandwiches). Although, options are limited I think its a great area to visit and grab some quick food before you head somewhere else. I see a lot of potential for this space to become something similar to "The Block" in nova. The Space: There needs to be more seating. I think that would be my only complaint. There seems to be a lot of space upstairs and they may be renovating it, but currently on a busy day its hard to find a place to sit; especially if you have a group larger than 4. Also, I think they need some sort of "instagram area" because the decor is pretty bland. I feel like once they make the area look "hip" then there will be a lot more traffic. There are lovely murals on the outside and on the inside you'll find a little over a half dozen food vendors and seating for about 20. One great thing here is they have variety - a coffee place, a bar, tacos, Jamaican food, cookies and ice cream, and more. Not everything is open all the time, but everything I had there (coffee and Jamaican food) was good! Given how relatively close to the Metro it is, I was surprised it wasn't busier when we dropped in. That said, it was nice to enjoy the benefits of a food hall while still being able to find seats and a have a conversation at a normal volume. So I guess the key is to come here now, before it gets too popular! read more

We got coffee from Alchemist Coffee, meatballs with brussel sprouts and polenta from Balls or Nothing, cheesesteak and jalapeño poppers from DC Steakholders, and ice cream sandwich from Captain Cookie. Everything was good, definitely elevated mall food court food. This Review is Solely for Bullfrog Bagels. Tastemakers do yourselves a favor and get rid of this vendor and get a bagel company that provides an enjoyable experience and better bagel quality. Quite frankly you're better off buying frozen bagels at the grocery store. At least that customer experience would be better. Bullfrog Bagels is the absolute worst; both bagel wise and service. If you're in a good mood don't come here because with the terrible and unhelpful lady at the register you're guaranteed to leave in a bad mood. I've tried to give this spot a few opportunities but apart from the lack luster flavor. They always manage to get the orders WRONG no matter how simple. Today was the last straw, I ordered an everything bagel with jalapeño cream cheese but was told they no longer had any everything bagels. Imagine my surprise when 15minutes into waiting for my simple order new customers ordering everything bagels were miraculously receiving them. When I asked the bad attitude girl at the register why she told me there were no everything bagels left when there clearly was she provided me the most nonsensical excuse. That she didn't know how many bagels were left. It literally made no sense. Their ticket system is a mess. Why is #71 getting served before 61 on the same type of bagel order? Why is 71 getting an everything bagel when 61 ordered 15 minutes prior and should have received the bagel they requested. If I'm paying $14 for 2 bagels I expect something greater than frustration and chewy, mediocre bagels. Don't waste your time, money, or aggravation coming here. Your money is better spent at Call Your Mothers. Yea there is always a line but you will probably wait just as long at bullfrogs for disappointment. While items may be a bit pricier, the casual vibes, great selection, and ability to try local options or see food made before your eyes is well worth it. Tastemakers has a decent amount of indoor seating and a large patio area perfect for sampling a number of items on a beautiful day. They also have some great classes on weekends to help broaden your cooking horizon. While the hours vary for the food options, most are open early afternoon. They've got a little something for everyone: Alchemist Coffee for your morning or mid-afternoon pick-me-up, Benjamin's - a Ben Franklin themed bar with local beers and some creative cocktails, Bullfrog Bagels - bagels an such, Captain Cookie - for your sweet tooth, Jerk and Juice for your Jamaican flavor, OMG Latin Flavors and Taqueria del Barrio if you are craving Latin American food (empanadas looked great!), and Stupid Burger with burgers that looked stupid good. I respect what the owners of this space are trying to accomplish in our neighborhood. However, a group of friends celebrating my partner's birthday stopped by here tonight to support the neighborhood's growth. The white man with a bun at the bar treated us as if we were an annoyance. Begrudgingly provided us with our drink order. It was not even remotely busy, so it was challenging to understand the dismissive and cold attitude with which he treated us. I'll be honest, it hurt to spend the money we did seeing as we were apparently not welcome. Cute addition to the neighborhood. The coffee place and the bagel place were great and the employees friendly. I was quite surprised however to see that there was no ramp to enter. I find it surprising that an establishment would make itself inaccessible to people with strollers or in wheelchairs. I was lucky that the lovely young lady working at the coffee counter helped me get my stroller in and out but this issue is definitely a deterrent to me visiting tastemakers again when I'm alone with the baby.
