This week at the Boxcar Café I enjoyed 1. Cream of broccoli…read moresoup and cheesy egg sandwich 2. Chicken waffle sandwich What you get is simple homemade food with good ingredients. The dishes are attractively presented but without pretence. Portions are moderate in size: not huge but enough for most people for lunch. The menu is not large but suitable for a small cafe like this. There are several sweets available for after the meal, as well as hot and cold beverages. The ambience is generally quiet and peaceful; there is seating for around 30. Staff are competent and friendly and happy to accommodate. Four stars because five might be more appropriate for a high-end place. The Boxcar does not pretend to be what it isn't, but does breakfast and lunch very well, at modest prices. Definitely worth several return visits. And no, I'm not given to hyperbole...

A little curious as to what this restaurant is trying to be, but the saving grace is that the…read morecheesecakes and service are pretty decent. What I mean by that is - well, you know how red flags are raised when a restaurant has way too many things on their menu? The reasoning there is that there's no way someone can be good at making THAT many dishes. Well, when I walked into Calories, I just wasn't really sure what it was trying to be. The storefront looks like a cute cafe, the cash and display case make it look like a bakery, the bar behind makes it look like a homey pub, and the tables in the back make it look like a nice fancy restaurant. So I was pretty confused about what kind of place this was. Nevertheless, we sat down and ordered a slice of the toffee cheesecake and a slice of the Saskatoon berry lemon yogurt cheesecake. I had been hearing rave reviews about the toffee all weekend, and although the texture is perfectly creamy and crust is beautifully crumby, was it worth the $10 for a single slice? Not sure. The berry cheesecake had a wonderful lemon flavor, but it tasted a little stale, like it had been in the case for a day or two. Our server was personable, friendly, and very professional. A nice place to come once when visiting town, but I'm not sure how often I would come if I was a local.

The desserts are made from scratch, and are fresh every time. Beware, lol, you'll be tempted to buy 1/2 or the entire dessert!! However, because it's made right, it will last in your fridge until it's gone. They use top ingredients, that's why. Taste the difference, here. The owners are great, and dedicated. Club Sandwich is great!!! I also love their holiday meal specials. In fact, last year, I gave gifts away, from this place. What a great way, to celebrate the holidays!! To start our long day in Saskatoon, my boyfriend and I began with Poached Breakfast Bistro. While…read moremy boyfriend just had a Double Espresso ($4.3), I got the Peanut Butter Hot Chocolate ($8), Poached Over Crab & Shrimp Risotto Cakes ($21) with Pecan & Maple Syrup Bacon Roll-Ups ($7.5). I'm very impressed with the menu and drink options. They have plenty of unique options and you can really feel the creativity in what they offer. The interior was also very unique, it's an older building but modernized with an artistic touch while incorporating its vintage roots. My boyfriend said his coffee was good, didn't taste burnt. The bar is in Hell for good coffee in Regina. My hot chocolate was made with frothed creamy peanut butter and chocolate almond milk. It made a welcome nutty flavour combination that was unique yet delicious. I also loved that it smelled strongly of peanut butter. Being at a restaurant named "Poached" I had to get poached eggs. My dish consisted off house made shrimp, pollock crab and white wine risotto cakes, flavoured with Dijon and Dill, along with 2 poached eggs and herbed hollandaise sauce and a side of rye toast. As an additional side, I ordered their classic house made bacon rollups. These are made with crushed pecans and pure maple syrup then topped with a hint of cayenne for heat. Honestly, it was a lot of food. You don't need the bacon rollups but the were SO good that I recommend trying them. My cakes were crispy on the outside yet hot and soft on the inside. The taste was mild, fresh and comforting. It was perfect for such a cold day and I wouldn't change a thing about this dish. I highly recommend this restaurant and everything we ordered. Thank you to everyone that suggested this spot. It's my cousin's favourite brunch spot in Saskatoon and now I understand why!

Their atmosphere is cozy yet modern, with dining areas a bit divided up to make it feel intimate once you sit down. Service was quick and friendly. We can recommend the poached eggs on cheesy hash browns and the omelet. They have fresh squeezed orange juice and their rye toast is very fresh. Everything tasted very fresh and there was no hint of greasiness like at some breakfast spots. Just wonderful.

The beef was cooked to perfection & with the truffle topping & the house made mayonnaise it was fantastic. Came with a side Caesar but something tells me that I should have ordered the kettle chips. The server Ashley was warm, polite & efficient. It would have been a 5-star but there was excessively loud construction going on that interrupted the meal.
