Juicy sausages of twenty different flavours (the jalapeno ones knock your socks off), thick steaks, roasting joints and stewing meat and more. They know what they're talking about and can advise on the best meats and condiments for your dinner party or Sunday roast. The cheeses are lush too (although quite basic English cheddars, red leicesters etc). A serious word of warning. The meat-eaters of Southville know all about the delights of Bob Wherlock. Consequently, I have queued for a very long time on a Saturday morning to get served (over half an hour sometimes). The people snake down North Street waiting for their sunday roasting joint or chicken. The Christmas turkey rush is even worse - but that's a sure sign it's very good meat. If that's not enough to prove to you how great this place is (and you've yet to taste the meat) Bob himself recently won a local food hero award. Well deserved.

This one isn't my most favourite, mainly because its selection is not quite as extensive as some, but for meat and deli counters it is spot on. The belly pork I bought from here was some of the best ever, with crisp crackling, without being greasy. The veg and cheese are great too, and much of it is picked/made on site. What I liked best is that a random medley of friendly farm animals greet you at the door: geese, pigs and chickens wandering around, snuffling in the mud. You can't get more free range than that! Hang up your city shoes and wack on your wellies for some yummy local grub!

It located at one end of the Gatcombe Farm shop in the old A370, which is now the quiet road between Long Ashton and Cambridge Batch. This place sells the best steak, sausages, black pudding in the west, at really good prices. Be warned though, it shuts very promptly on Saturdays at 5 plus it does a great Sunday morning fry up, however it doesn't open till 10am. I bought a leg of lamb the other day, the butcher said to me that it would taste lovely as it was brought up on a diet of parnips and rosemary. It was completely delicious. Small animal farm next to it with Small Ponies, Geese, and Rheas (like ostriches) and its also nice for cream teas and sunday lunch in the fresh air on a sunny day

Well I have to say i'm a little shocked no one else has written a review about this little gem!…read more This fruit and veg shop is fantastic, it's shaped like a horseshoe, you enter in one end, your nose filled with the smells of so many glorious fresh fruits and vegatables, you have a little nosey around as you make your way around the horseshoe and then you come out the other end after your magical healthy journey and pay for your goods. The price is fantastic and I truely hope that the supermarkets don't squash this shining beacon of what is so great about buying local produce. The front of the shop is red lettering and white background and is listed as 'Fruit market' above the exite and 'EAST STREET fresh fruit and veg' above the entrance - please take note, we can't be doing with people ruining thier perfect system!

Its not a middle class farmers market, its a proper old fashioned market, with fresh and delicious smelling and tasting fruit at bargain prices. It also has a gorgeous array of plants for sale out front. I keep being tempted by them but am usually on my bike when I go to the market. In a world where local supermarkets sell overpriced bland fruit and veg grown in far flung corners of the world it is encouraging to see such a fantastic market still surviving despite the large Asda down the road. Its got character, cheap prices and delicious produce. Well worth turning your nose up at the inferior supermarket produce and taking the extra stroll up East Street to get some tasty treats. Craving some fresh strawberries now!!

They've gone far since. I buy their delicious and refreshing detox teas - full of flavour and odd combinations of herbs and flowers of great benefit to one's health. They have an online shop and everything they use (including packaging) is sustainable and fairtrade and organic. The factory is based at this site, but as far as I'm aware there is no physical shop there - you can source their stuff in some supermarkets and in several health food shops across the city.

If you, like me, always liked the idea of herbal teas (reducing your caffeine intake and upping your water intake while taking in some anti-oxident full herbs) but just couldn't stand the blandness of the teas on offer on supermarket shelves then take note. Pukka do an impeccable range of mouth-watering teas, from green tea with flavours to spiced chai teas and range of wellbeing teas. There is literally a tea for every occasion with Pukka. A relax tea, a clarity tea, a harmonise tea and a detox tea (which ate amazing for hangovers, seriously, forget Lucozade and a fry up - this will do it!). I've lost about a stone in the past year and I put it largely down to ditching the coffee for 6-8 cups of these bad boys every day. And it's catching on, Erin Connor the supermodel is a new convert to the Pukka cause. If you want to try before you buy you can find them in certain cafes in town, including the Folk House. The best place to buy the boxes of tea is from the website direct.

People have got wise to this and started going back to more traditional routes, and hence Ashton fruit & veg stores have thrived in the recession. I like it because the produce isn't all uniformly the same size and without blemish - but all the more beautiful and tasty for not being so. Situated in the height of cool on North Street in Southville, I also feel a sense of satisfaction each time I visit (and leave laden with cloth bags of scrummy veg for the week). By shopping here you're making a small gesture at doing something 'local' for a change. The obvious downside is that you may pay a little extra than the budget stores (who offer worringly cheap prices), but I can really taste the difference - buttery, powdery potatoes and crisp juicy British apples. The staff are helpful too, what they don't stock they'll order in. Veg-tastic.
