What is La Lou's secret? We have been dining at La Lou for over 25 years, it is our "Go-To"…read morelocation for all our little special occasions. You are welcomed so warmly by the staff, always helpful but NEVER intrusive. Honestly makes you feel like you are at a Louisiana local neighbourhood Chow-Down, as friend not a patron. Love that about La Lou. Last night's dinner started with a Hurricane, for me and a spicy Caesar for my partner. The Hurricane was delicious, a perfect blend of fruit juices and rum, I could drink these and nothing else, for the rest of my life. My partner reported the Caesar was perfect, from the mix to the spicy bean garnish. Our appetizers were Hush Puppies (of course) and Crab Cakes. The Hush Puppies were little balls of flavour, texture and taste, prepared to perfection. The crab cakes had the crispy exterior and soft, savoury and delicious interior. Love the presentation. I should have taken photos but I was too interested in devouring these little jewels. My partner ordered the Meat Jambalaya, he was blown away by the perfect seasoning, combination of the ingredients, Andouille sausage, smoked ham and chicken. He says he highly recommends this dish. Ordinarily, I go with the blackened fish of the day, but this visit I thought I would try Lou's Famous Fried Chicken. There is a reason it is "Famous". The chicken was juicy and tender, the coating was crisp and delicious. It came with a side of seasoned fries, delicious and tender. We desperately wanted the incredible Bananas Foster dessert but there was no way we could eat another bite, so we finished off with 2 BB King specialty coffees. You have to try one, if you go; delicious! Again, I forgot photos! Coffee, Bailey's and darned if I can remember the other ingredients. They are listed on the menu. All this to say that if you are visiting Montréal - this is a "Must visit" destination. We live 65 kms away and gladly brave the traffic to avail ourselves of this little treasure chest of Louisiana flavours.

Apparently this place has been around for about 35 years along with other spots in this neighborhood. I was starving so we ordered right away and asked for sweet potato fries. They came out super hot since the kitchen was just a few steps away. They had a very flakey flour coating and were delicious with the sauce. The paneed chicken with creamy green peppercorn sauce was good with the garlic mashed potatoes. Not bad but kind of expensive for what it was. As for the meat jambalaya, it seemed a bit skimpy on the meats... Just a few pieces of sausage, ham and chicken. Good tomato based sauce. Overall food to price value is a 4/5.

Started with the crab cakes, little pillows of flavour sent from the gods. Absolutely delicious, the small salad on the side was excellent, fresh and so perfectly balanced. My companion was a little more wise than was I; he did not order an appetizer and was able to finish his main, a crab burger with fries and coleslaw as the side. The bun was fresh and delicious. The burger did come with cheese/lettuce/tomato and these additions were not necessary and indeed, did not highlight the crab as much as it should have been but overall he was very pleased. He was, however, envious of my choice, the calamari platter. The calamari was perfection. So tender, the pieces hardly required chewing...the batter was delicious. I chose, as my side, the sweet potato fries, they too, were so tasty. I could not, however finish and our entirely professional and welcoming member of the wait staff, provided me with a "take home" container. I will be reliving that fabulous meal, later today. As for beverages, my companion had the New Orleans styled Caesar and was totally satisfied with the flavour and presentation. So much so, he had another. I went for the Banana Mojito. I now have a new favourite beverage. No one flavour overpowers the other, it is not too sweet and is wonderful blending of taste experience. Bravo La Nouvelle-Orléans, you have, absolutely, done it again.

The place is very small, just one table that will sit 2-3 people and about 5-6 high stools, where you can sit and eat by the window. I arrived and after looking at the menu, I ordered the fried pork (Griot porc) with rice and beans, fried plantains, salad and the Pikliz..it was about $16.75 for the full meal. The plate was big...lots of rice, chunks of fried pork and sides....the pork was a bit on the dry side, so I poured some of the sauce on it....the rice and beans was really good. The fried plantains were not hot nor crunchy/crispy. Not a fan. The salad was fresh. Overall not a bad choice if you are in this part of town but not my favorite Haitian spot.....

BUT other than that, the food is SO worth the tiny bit of confusion lol Honestly, I don't know why you're still reading my review. Get your butt over there, you will not regret it!!!!
