Once upon a time, I owned a 1979 VW Bug convertible. Bad move... way bad move. Problem is that I don't know squat about cars, so whenever my car had some kind of problem, I brought it down to Tassi's here in Colma. It's a ways from SF but thankfully they are right next to the Colma BART station, so it's convenient to drop the car off in the morning and Bart back into the city. Prices were affordable and they always fixed my problem... Up until the time, that is, when they said that my bug needed a new engine... Great guys, but after countless attempts at getting them to repair a couple of issues that they had me pay in advance.... 8 months later. I'm done. Had my clutch done at Tassi in 2015, drove the car less than 300 miles total til today. The new mechanic is replacing my clutch took it off in front of me as he's dropping my engine he asked who did your clutch ? I told him Tassi in Colma. He said they failed to tighten the engine transmission bolts, I asked what do you mean ?? He replied I'm taking them off with my fingers. Once the engine was off I saw they installed a Mexican sub par clutch which was causing me to loose power in 4th gear. Worst 550.00 dollars I ever spent at Tassi read more

Guys are great! I've had timing belts, alternators, brake calipers, water pumps replaced and I don't feel their trying to overcharge for work that wasn't done and when they've mentioned parts to be replaced they've called me before hand and asked if I'd like it replaced. All this work and my car still runs like a top. My latest dilemma was trying to figure out what was going on between the actuator, door locks, and the power windows. Brought it by and they spent the time to find a tiny fuse which was blown...after it was replaced, all was well with no charge. The owner is very friendly and I feel these guys are better and cheaper than taking it to a dealership. Thanks again. read more

We decided to take a lunch stop in San Francisco on our drive from LA to Seattle. Unfortunately our air cooled Vanagon couldn't start after lunch. After calling around to local mechanics, Tassi came recommended so we gave them a call and they let us tow our VW over. It was late in the afternoon and the shop was closing, but they were very accommodating and let us sleep in our van in their driveway and promised to take care of us first thing in the morning. The van basically started right-up in the morning after tinkering with the starter wires. They suspected that the starter wire was loose so they just fastened it. No services was actually done to our car - but they did teach me how to bypass the ignition and crank the engine using a wire under the car just in case the issue came back when we were on the road. Call it good (or bad) timing, but our sliding door actually broke off the day before we had starting issues. Since the starting issue was diagnosed very quickly, they were able to pull door parts from a car on their lot and got our sliding door working again! They also adjusted our awning (it was rubbing against the pop-top causing damage) and even allowed us to pick random accessories from their older Vanagons too. All in all, an excellent VW shop! When it comes down to it, we came over in a tow truck and left happily driving away within less than 24 hours. We had a really positive experience with these guys. Their customer service is top notch and I definitely recommend Tassi if you're in the bay area. The only reason why they didn't get 5 star rating is because the root of my starting issue was not fixed. We continued to experience starting hiccups on our drive to Seattle, but we were able to keep it moving since they showed me the hotwire trick. We finally got the starting issue resolved in Portland, with the addition of a relay next to the starter. read more

Tassi's is a Mecca for many VW van owners to get their vans serviced. In early January 2021, he quickly arranged to have my vanagon towed to his shop, so his team of van wizards could replace the engine in my vanagon with a low-mileage engine that he had in his shop. My engine had over 300K miles on the engine and a rod punctured the engine block on new year's eve. In the last 17 years we've had three VW's - a 70 beetle, 88 cabriolet (still have it), and a 95 Jetta. They have all gone to Tassi, and we've all been happier for it. The work is consistently great, and Bruce and his guys are extremely honest. Having done dealer service on cars, I do like the reliability of the computerized tracking of everything, and the scheduling is a LITTLE (not a lot) more predictable than Tassi. Tassi costs a lot less, will bother to track down used parts, has consistently treated me really well, and gives AWESOME referrals for services they don't provide. I'm sure there are a couple other positives I could mention. True, I do like how the dealer can track exactly what happened to my car and when. But I might go there as much as once a year, and Bruce still remembers me, if not everything he did on the car the last time. read more

UPDATE: So I brought my '83 Westy in for an engine rebuild/replacement. Knew it was time, saved my 3k for the repair bill and was ready to go. Scheduled a time to bring it in, the middle-aged white guy (forgot his name) drove it around the block and came back saying "yeah, your engine is f'ed up." They put together an estimate right there. Came back at +-$2700.00. Awesome! A few hundred less than I thought it would be. They wanted half up front to get started, which I wasn't expecting, and told them I would be back in a couple of days after I'd transferred some money around. When I came back two days later to give them their check, they had already pulled the motor and were halfway through the rebuild. The owner (the shorter white guy), offered to bring me back into the shop to see what they were doing, and my motor was sitting there on the stand, bright and clean, already broken down and halfway put back together. The mechanic working on it coped a bit of an attitude when I started asking a few questions, but his answers assuaged any fears that I may of had. Even though he is a young guy, he obviously knows what he is talking about. Also, I knew that my catalytic converter was a piece of crap, but my dad had sent an extra one he had. I asked if they could install it instead of the old one, and their response was "No prob." When I brought it in the next day, I was expecting them to make some excuse why they couldn't use it and charge me for a new one, but all I heard was "Wow, this is a really nice catalytic converter and muffler!" Two days later my bus was done. Perfectly. The follow-up new engine tune up was quick and easy, and they only charged me $18 for new oil. Total cost was only $20.00 more than their initial estimate, but that covered them installing a new tail pipe and gaskets for the catalytic converter/muffer assembly. Cheap. This bus runs awesome, and I've made the rest of my family (sister has an '81, my dad has an '80 and a '74, uncle has an '82, aunt has a '78) jealous. Thanks Tassi! Tyson Schroeder The people who give Tassi 1 star really crack me up. "Their ability to get parts is the only redeeming quality. Like another reviewer said, this place is dirty, ransacked with parts EVERYWHERE" - if you own an air-cooled VW, it is really helpful to go to a place that not only can GET these sometimes rare parts, but might actually have one on hand! And dirty... well, they do deal with old, old cars, many of which have chronic oil leak problems. "I bought my 1972 bus and brought if over for a simple diagnostic. "We are still working of your car. We'll be done in 2-3 hours". WTF!!!! All I need is completed diagnostic, which takes less than an Hour. THEY SUCK BIG TIME!!!!!" - If you can do a complete diagnostic on an almost 40 year old van in an hour, why don't you do it yourself? Heck, I'll even hire you! My advice (coming from someone who owns a '83 Westfalia and a '66 bug, neither of which are daily drivers), if you don't want to deal with an old, unreliable car like an air-cooled VW, go get yourself a Civic. I've spent easily over $2500 to fix oil leaks. My flywheel seal was allegedly replaced at Tassi (though I didn't see it actually being done, didn't see the engine out of the car) and it's still leaking from the "replaced" seal just as much as ever. It's also continuing to leak from the passenger side of the engine block, perhaps from push rods or other seals located there, after being told there were "no visible leaks". I'm still parking with cat litter under my engine, $2500 later. I'm now told by other classic VW owners in the Bay Area that my story is not surprising at all, and that many have taken their business elsewhere. I really miss that $2500. Could've bought a lot of oil with that money. read more

many years and many thousands of dollars spent here I can honestly say these guys are incompetent beyond belief! If I wrote every horror story I went through with them you would probably think I was making it up but of all the terrible work they did, the worst was rebuild my head and not seat the valves correctly. I had a compression test done after only 10k and found I had 2 leaky valves. when i called them they wouldn't stand behind their work and told me i needed a complete engine rebuild. funny because I asked them if i needed that before I did the head job and they said no! So unless you enjoy many headaches, heartaches, frustrations, and wasting money, please head my warning and go to any other mechanic than them! read more

1. commitments (time when your vehicle will be done -5) if it's going to take 1 month say it vs it will be ready tomorrow each time n the person waste their time going there since no one calls to say its not ready, or when you call them they say its ready n you get there and your waiting for 3 hrs and then they say it's not going to be ready!!! 2. price tends to change vs what you were told.. 3. Mechanics are great don't get me wrong just they aren't the ones who make the commitements or tell you what has to be done etc, if it were them i think you would actually have a good experience but since it's not I don't recommend Tassie's.. save yourself the aggrevation n headache honestly..... money vs. time?? sometimes most of us don't have the time so we bring it to a shop, but when the time drags on n on well we think damn it why did we even do that when we could've done the work ourselves and not had to deal with the headache of PAYING FOR A SERVICE ... key word PAYING, SERVICE!!! read more

Bruce and the guys at Tassi have kept my old VW's on the road for the last decade and they are the best. I have an MK1 Cabriolet, two Scirocco's and an MK2 Jetta. Tassi has kept them alive and well all these years. Every time I get a car back from these guys, it runs and drives like new again. Previous review removed. Apparently too honest. Why is an honest review "a violation of terms?" I guess paying business can have reviews marked as such and deleted. Nothing I've ever had done here was done to completion and it always had to go back, and as others have stated, you never can get an straight answer. Everyone is nice, but that' not an excuse for being dishonest. The final straw was having $1300 worth of brake work done, supposedly a virtually new system, only to find out 800 miles later that they changed ONE hose and ONE wheel cylinder and ONE set of pads. A total of $90 in parts and maybe 90 minutes labor. A $200-$250 job. I was charged for FOUR hoses, FOUR wheel cylinders, a new master cylinder, and various other parts, plus the labor to install them. Unfortunately, I'd only driven the car 800 miles over the next couple years, so it was too late to really do anything about it. Find someone else, or get a "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive" book by John Muir. They can't get anything YOU can't get on line. I'm sorry, I hate to leave bad feedback, but this was theft of three weeks pay. I don't mind paying for work, just DO it or don't charge me for it. read more

I have been a client of Tassi fo the last 12 months We have 3 cars, 1 WW and 2 Audis. We have spent more than $8k as I have found out that their mechanics are good. That said, my last experience was worst that I could have ever imagined. On my way to pick up the car, I have signed my last check ($200) and have asked Duncan (reception guy)what I believe was a reasonable request : to do a 360 on the car, knowing that I have spent more than $3k in the last 4 weeks (on 3 cars). Duncan told me they do not provide this service unless it was specifically asked by the client. Then we have started to argue, finally he gave me 5 seconds to leave "his" shop otherwise... Basiccaly he was physically threatened me and my ....2 years old son. So I took the key and asked for my car... ...That I could not find...So my son and I had to wait/walk UNDER the RAIN for more than 5 long min to finally find it with the help of the 2 mechanics guys (200 yards away)...... No comment. I just hope this experience will never happen again to any of their client. read more

Whenever I went to a mechanic, I always felt as if I had to practically rehearse my stance on the drive over and enter the facility with my poker face on and shoulders back. At Tassi I am able to relax and know that I will be taken care of. They are honest, genuine AND fair- which is extremely hard to find. You get what you pay for. I hired these guys to do a pre-purchase inspection on a Vanagon and I was told that there were a few minor things that would need to be addressed down the road, but nothing major. Took the Vanagon for a second opinion to a certain shop in Berkeley, and they found a TON of work that needed to be done, including HEAVILY-CRACKED FUEL HOSES. You know, the thing that causes Vanagons to explode in a fireball? Tassi completely missed this diagnosis - absolutely unacceptable for a VW shop to not inspect and address this well-known issue. Avoid this shop, no matter how cheap their estimate may be. read more

in the middle of the Tassi run-around.. So brought my car in for a carb tune-up and next thing i know I apparently have a bad motor that needs the top-end rebuilt.. I let them rebuild the top-end and come back to pick it up.. parts are missing and not put back together completely. I confronted them with this and they helped me get it all back together. I took off and heard a terrible noise coming from the motor.. took it back and they told me they need to check this out.. few days later they tell me there is more damage then they thought.. I asked why they DID NOT notice this the first time, secondly why did they tell me this car was done.. it was clear to me and should be clear to any mechanic that knows classic vw's that there was something terribly wrong.. they acted like they didn't know why.. so I still want to give them the benefit of the doubt and let them work on it more. due to of 10+ years of great service at Tassi I wanted to trust them.. This is where the story gets worse.. i went to pick it up today after specifically pointing out to them earlier i was upset about my car not being put back together completely not to mention my stereo being stolen in the first round , but I found the exact same failures. My car was incomplete and on top of that it still sounded terrible. They claim it is my carburetors being worn out, but this sound is not coming from the carbs. this sounds like a "Loose Cam Gear Noise or Flywheel" and it is sooooo obvious anyone who drives these old vws would know right away that something is wrong.. However they claim they never noticed it.. This has to be either the most incompetent gaggle of mechanics I have ever dealt with or they really are trying to pull one over on me. (Edit I removed the last part of this review due to the fact that the issue was resolved for the most part today) I am not entirely sure if I will use tassi again other then parts or simple jobs due to convenience of being close to my house. However I still find it very frustrating that the noise was very obvious and they imo pretended to not hear it. It was not a serious noise since it turned out to be the muffler slamming up against the body of the car. They installed this muffler for me brand new and did not even notice it was sitting on the body of the car nor did they hear the noise it was making when the car ran. I thought it was something serious which from the way they treated this job it very well could of been.. Now its not entirely their fault the MFG of the muffler made it a bit to long to fit the cut-out. However if they were a competent shop with a ounce of detail they would not only see the problem before they returned the car to me, but hear the noise on a proper test drive. In conclusion I have never dealt with such chaos with my classic vw's and I have owned at least 15 different beetles and type 3's so I have had my fair share of shop repairs.. This was just one really difficult nightmare of a situation and makes it hard for me to have the same respect I used to have for Tassi. read more

Never again. My usual mechanic subcontracted my 69 Beetle to Tassi to have some work done. I didn't see my car again for two and a half months. I've seen this phenomenon referred to elsewhere as "Tassi Time", and I cannot tell you how frustrating that experience was. And when I finally did get the car back I discovered they had managed to lose one of my keys. I think it's great that some folks have had nothing but positive experiences with Tassi, but I know from personal experience there are other people whose experience is anything but positive. I would have my car towed elsewhere if it broke down in Tassi's parking lot, there is NO WAY it will ever end up there again. read more

I have known Bruce (the owner) and have gone to Tassi since 1997. Though I no longer have an old VW (had a 74 Beetle and 84 Westfalia), I have a Toyota now. Bruce is one of the nicest guys I have ever met, he is the laid-back surfer type and a person who wants to make his customers happy. First of all, Tassi is not the perfect mechanic. I have yet to find one. The garages that are super clean and tidy with nice waiting rooms, coffee, etc are expensive. The garages that are unorganized, maybe a bit dirty, etc are cheap. Tassi falls into the latter category, if you are used to the former you will be disappointed. But if you want reasonable prices, Tassi is really tough to beat, I think Bruce beats everyone on price by a long shot. One of the main things I like about Bruce is that he is really good about finding alternatives to new (and pricey) parts, Bruce is very good with having used parts in stock and finding good quality aftermarket parts that do the job. He will keep your old VW running well if you are on a limited budget. That being said, old VWs are well......old. If you are driving a 30-40 year old car, you can't expect the same reliability as a new Toyota. You are gonna have issues. Some of these issues are very tough to diagnose. Bruce knows old VWs as well as anyone, but sometimes even he gets stumped. What I have found is that Bruce always does what it takes to solve the problem, but sometimes it takes a while. So you need to be a bit flexible on schedule. Honestly if you are not flexible with your old VW, you probably shouldn't own one. I think some of the folks posting bad reviews fail to see this connection. If I buy another old VW again, I will be going back to the folks at Tassi. read more

The first time i went to tassi;s was a decent experience, they were nice and seemingly honest and obviously fixed what was wrong with my rabbit. The last time i went to tassi's they screwed me over. I am no mechanic, which is why i go to a mechanic... and took my rabbit in b.c it kept stalling in traffic... they told me it was the alternator and changed it... the next day, my car did the exact same thing, stalled in traffic..... so i took it back and they said they would look at it..... 2 days later, i called them, and they told me they lost my keys. .. but not to worry, they would find them and call me when they took a look at the car. another 2 days later, i called them back (obviously no call from them) and they said there was nothing wrong with the car. well, it stalled in traffic again, and i had to get it towed b.c it wouldnt start. I took it to B&W brake and wheel in San Francisco and they fixed it beautifully, (the fuel system was messed up), they were honest and fixed the problem NOW, like i said, i am no mechanic, but these people dicked me over, fixing something totally not having to do with the problem, and when i took it back, didnt even look at it to fix it. They ignored me and basically either didnt have time to fix my car , didnt care, or were to ignorant to find the problem. I also hate to play to feminist card but i feel it may apply here. IF ONLY YOU COULD GIVE A ZERO, they'd get a minus zero 1. They FAIL TO STAND BEHIND THEIR WORK 2. As others have mentioned, you go in with a problem and after $$$ the problem is either unresolved, or they forget to put some other part back together properly. 3. The place is filthy and disorganized, and what you see is pretty much what you get. 4. Once they have your vehicle (as others have commented) they can be (but are not always) completely unresponsive. 4. The owner is more interested in his daily surfing than running a competent business. Took my Westy in for new transmission. $1,800 = fair price. Less than 4,000 miles later the new (rebuilt) tranny is failing. Think they'd stand by their work? OH NO. "you are outside the warranty period" (it had been a couple of years) "perhaps it's the clutch" -- so they replace the (perfectly good) clutch for $4-500. I have been a long term customer. I barely drive the Westy...only for camping trips, so the 4k miles are all easy highway miles. After pleading with Bruce (the owner) no movement. No accommodation. Jeeeze - they installed a faulty transmission for crying out loud. End of the day, as much as we hate to drive across a bridge, best Vanagon shop is Valley Wagonworks in San Rafael. Competent, clean, fair pricing, and very responsive owners and employees. WARNING. Leave your priceless classic VW at Tassi at your own risk! read more

My first visit to this shop was a rousing success. My 2002 Jetta had a broken armrest...I was leaning on it get out of the car....not too smart on my part. Sounds like no big deal to fix, but Serramonte VW wanted $826 for a new one. You read that right. Tassi had a used one, installed it in an hour and Bruce charged me $60. Needless to say Bruce is the man! His shop is totally non-corporate and personal. He gave me some tips and info about my car that I didn't get anywhere else. Awful experience, run!!!! I paid them hundreds of dollars to make a repair on my VW Golf and the same part broke two weeks later. No refund, nothing. I also used them (at the same time) to repair a Eurovan I own and always kept a professional demeanor when communicating with their staff but when I questioned them about my concerns I got screams and curses. I found them outright rude and disrespectful. It has been a really insane experience. They kept my vehicle for weeks, promising me each week that it'd be done on Friday, all to no avail. I was referred to them by Team Volkswagon at Serramonte. I wish I had just stayed at the dealer. Total nightmare. read more

Hi Yelpers, I only yelp real businesses, none of this posh hipster crap to see how many friends or reviews I can get on yelp, but I digress. Tassi's has been an interesting experience for me. I'm definitely between loving this place and just not wanting to bother. As for service I'm not one to offer any advice yet... but for parts I can honestly say this is the place to go to get any OEM VW part you need. If they don't have it in they're big inventory it'll be there in a weeks time. More importantly at a reasonable price. If you own an older VW you should be doing your own service work anyway. The engines aren't that complicated and someone like myself with very little mechanical experience has appreciated having a place where I can ask questions and purchase parts that aren't marked up 100%. Those of you bitching about tassi's service not being that good have obviously not tried to get your vw serviced elsewhere, and chances are if you think the service was bad or your car isn't working better then you probably have beaten the hell out of it. They're labor and parts prices are unbeatable in comparison to any of the other places I've priced out. I recently put a lot of money into restoring an old 80 air cooled vanagon and this place has been my mecca for parts. I would rate tassi's higher but they're lack of organization is what brings me to say initially "I'm definitely between loving this place and just not wanting to bother" I called to get a new passenger side mirror, put it on, but couldn't figure out why I couldn't see out of it... they gave me the wrong side. On another instance I ordered a locking gas cap which was apparently in stock, but they couldn't find it (Even though they ordered it the day before and was already in). So I had to come back twice, now that pisses me off a little, gas is not cheap now and if I lived any farther away I would have been royally pissed when I showed up to pick up a part and they couldn't find it. Although I give them them the benefit of the doubt as I'm a new tassi customer, and Ive been into shops far worse than this one. the fact they work so regularly on vanagons gives me some confidence that when I do bring my Van in for some servicing or the possible external oil cooler I wanna install that this is the place I will more than likely go. read more

I've had numerous VW's over the years. 4 bugs pre 70's and 4 Westys from 71 to 90. I've been to many Vw garages and this was the worst one yet. The owner or mechanic or whoever he was, was incredibly rude to my wife and unfriendly to me. Tassi inc. need to learn some customer relations skills. We would never take anything there again. There has to be a decent friendly Vw garage in SF! Keep looking and move on. read more

They might be disorganized, but when it comes to technical knowledge, and sound auto repair, I have to give them a 5. I have a 93 Eurovan manual. Every time I have an issue, they always repair it on time, and ONCE, I never have to go back due to faulty repairs. It's tough reading some of the less positive experience some yelpers have had with Tassi's but that's what yelp is for. I've been going to Bruce, Ray and the rest of Tassi since the early 90's when I first got bit by the Bug fever. It's always been a good experience for me and the work done was always as expected. There are times when Bruce would even go out of his way to fix something minor and not charge for it. Having gone through several air cooled bugs and 80's rabbits I still go here once in awhile to have work done when I'm pressed for time and can't do the work myself. If you have a VW, take it here. They know their stuff and will give you the fairest price possible. I TOTALLY trust these guys. My check engine and electrical lights lit up on my dash. I took my Jetta wagon somewhere nearby. It was fixed for a week. Then the lights came back on again. After paying almost $450 the first time, they told me now I needed to shell out another $700. Or they could reset the computer. Of course I took the free option. I took the car back to them 3 more times, each time the lights would go off for 1-5 days, then come back on. The guys at Tassi fixed my car, and got me a part for $200 less than the price quoted to me from the other place. I'm so glad my friend recommended them to me. Love it! Have 66 beetle and am kind of new to it. I really loved how patient he was and how he told me what was wrong and what needed to be done. I felt like they truly care about the customer. Other places before tried to overcharge me but he gets it done quick and easy. He walks you through the problem and tell you what to look out for if it comes to happen again. Called them for some simple question while I was at the auto part store buying oil, and they were friendly to answer. They care about your car and want you to have a good running car. I recommend calling ahead of time and letting them know the problem. Love this place! read more
