The Tasmanian Devil is in a significant amount of trouble, as they emphasized when I walked in, and if you want to see one while supporting the conservation efforts, this place seems to make sense. Their "unzoo" branding is a bit pretentious; it's not fundamentally different from a lot of other decent outdoor wildlife sanctuaries. Their Tasmanian Devils are retired from breeding in conservation sites, and they are not hidden. They get to run around, and you can see them quite easily, and they do entertain. They're vicious and not terribly bright (the whole head is apparently jaws with very little brain), so the ubiquitous pictures that people get while holding other animals in other Australian animal parks are not happening. The place is modest, but does have some other interesting animals, including kangaroos you can walk up to and pet, and a view of the water. I wasn't blown away by anything, but if you really want to see a Devil, this is an easier way than trying to find a wild one.

It is said that Tasmania is the Road Kill capital of Australia. And it is here at Bonarong…read moreWildlife Sanctuary that many of these poor critters come. The facility has a complete veterinary clinic and surgical centre on site, along with places for them to stay. Bonarong is NOT a zoo. Gayle and I were here as part of our group tour, with one highlight being able to see a couple Tasmanian Devils. Other critters here include: kangaroos, wombats, quolls, echidnas, and various bird species. We were able to interact with many of these animals, some of which will be rehabilitated for release. Yes, we didn't see one in the wild, but the mission of Bonarong definitely touched our hearts. If you have the capacity to help with Bonarong's mission, please head over to: www.friendsofbongarong.com

Stopped here on our way into Hobart. It's a cool place with many local animals…read more It's was a bad weather day but we were able to see a few birds and tons of kangaroos before the sky open up to a downpour. The kangaroos were so tame and there were so many of them. There is free food bins to allow you to feed them and they love a scratch on the chest. I'm amazed at how big many of them are and how gentle they are with the visitors. As it was a downpour when we got to the emus and Tasmanian devils, we didn't see much of them. They wanted to stay out of the cold rain as much as we did. We hung around for the tour at 3pm but bailed when the worst of the rain started right around that time. All funding comes from visitors. They have a nice hospital to care for injured wild animals. Staff was very knowledgeable about the animals and were great hosts. Great stop.

Had an amazing time, I hand fed kangaroos, goats, deer, sheep and lamas. But be careful of the…read moreemus, they are very quick and they will try to run off your cup of feed. The keepers were great, my husband really wanted to get up close to the koala so found one of the keepers and we were allowed in the enclosure to stroke the koala. I found the talks on the lions, tigers and tasmanian devils very interesting. It's very child friendly and a great shop to get gifts.

Zoodoo makes me so happy and so sad…read more I've been twice now, once at the height of summer and once at the end of winter, and I can enthusiastically say that it's far less sad to see in winter, when everything is green and lush. In summer, most of the fields around Zoodoo are dry and brown, and seeing these remarkable animals and birds kicking up dust is nothing short of depressing. Winter! Go in winter! Please go in winter. Both times I've been to Zoodoo have been because of pre-booked Animal Encounters, which are ridiculously well-priced compared to a lot of other zoos and wildlife places, and they're also A GREAT TIME. Thanks to Zoodoo's encounters, I've now fed hay to a trio of zebras, and fed mealworms (... ok, not charming but worth it) to both meerkats and li'l marmoset monkeys. The marmosets were definitely my faves and I would do this encounter again in a heartbeat. For the encounters they also take photos (but selfies are still welcome) and burn them onto a CD for you (remember the days when we'd burn everything on CD? What sweet memories). Your Zoodoo entry also includes a cheeky little bus trip around the zoo, with stops to feed some of the animals from the safe confines of the bus (but this doesn't mean a camel won't spit on you). There's also the token "feed the roos" pen but most of them are pretty chill and won't mob you like the gang at Bonorong do (hungry/greedy roos can actually be pretty intimidating, ok?). Most of the animals seem very fatty boombah and lazy at Zoodoo, and I can never quite decide if this pleases or upsets me. But I'll probably go back for another Animal Encounter without hesitation next time a friend suggests it.
