The new Community Center is enormous, and the landscaping is beautiful. You can set up your event here or just come to a relaxing. It is currently open from 9 am to 6 pm Monday to Friday only. Saturday and Sunday are closed. The cafe next to the main entrance has outdoor seating. You can enjoy a cup of coffee or some snacks there. This is a lovely area to visit when you're in Elk Grove.

Technically the activity location is officially called the "New Aquatic Center" at 8025 Waterman Rd, not the Pat O'Brien Community Center but I'm leaving this review here for now until the "New Aquatic Center" gets its own business page. For only $30 for 4 classes, I signed up as something fun to do and cool off to end the summer, and to complement my Orangetheory workouts and Zumba classes. The 45-minute class is meant to help improve flexibility and range of motion, and to build cardiovascular fitness and muscular strength. I brought water shoes, a towel, swimming attire, and a hat. They didn't recommend any need for pool noodles. Check in at the window and after entering the gate, grab a pair of foam water dumbbells (black, blue, or purple -- I'm not too sure the difference) and choose a spot in the water. Winnie had a speaker with music playing and a whiteboard with the moves written out to follow along/refer to. The warm-up consisted of jogging a few laps in the water around the pool to start, followed by frog leaps around the pool. Lastly, butt-kicks underwater in place. First set was jumping West/North/East/South and back to center underwater. Next was the Superman, then Flutter Kicks for more core work. Then we did Front Raises with the water dumbbells. (The water dumbbells offer resistance underwater that will help tone and strengthen the arm muscles, abs, and back.) Set #2 consisted of Lateral Raises, a Standing Row, and Chest Fly moves with the water dumbbells. Finally, the cooldown was another jogging lap around the pool, one lap walking around the pool, then stretches for hamstrings, triceps, shoulders, neck, obliques, etc. It's a neat exercise alternative, and our instructor was Winnie (although her last class will be the August 13th as she's going back to college in SoCal). The class size isn't too big, and all ages represented! For the first meeting we were in the shallow end of the larger (laned) pool as there was only one lifeguard. They also have water aerobics offered Monday and Wednesday evenings 7:30-8:15PM, which continue into September and October (not sure about the Saturday ones). UPDATE: Instructor changed to Brittany (sp?) for remainder of the August Saturday sessions. Lots of parking. I know at the Pat O'Brien Community Center they also have Zumba classes, and Citizens Church meets on Sundays too. There's a walking path and basketball court too, sometimes they have craft fairs, car shows, and you might even catch Rico's Tamales for sale.

I always see events being hosted at District56 on social media, so I honestly thought it was mainly a community space where people hosted events. I had no idea there was an actual park back there too! It's a pretty decent-sized community center with an aquatic center, a large park, and a beautiful pond. My friend and I were actually really impressed by the layout of the entire area. I really like the modern style, and the area is fairly clean and well maintained. The park itself is kind of hidden behind the buildings, big trees, and parking lots, so if you've driven past it like I have, you probably wouldn't even know there's a community park back there. It almost feels like entering an amusement park because you have to drive into the parking lot and make your way toward the park before you really see everything it has to offer. There's a huge grassy field, and I absolutely love the pond and seeing all the geese around it. There's also an aquatic center with big water slides. I haven't actually been inside the aquatic center yet, but from the outside, it looks pretty clean and spacious. One of my kids' and my favorite things is the splash pad outside the aquatic center. We especially love how the water features light up at night, which makes it even more fun and enjoyable in the evening. This has become one of the parks my kids and I visit pretty often in the Elk Grove area, and we never get tired of coming here. It's such a nice little hidden gem for walking, letting the kids play, or simply enjoying some time outside.

I had my partner call in to ask if we could reserve the picnic area, since we were pretty set in hosting our party there. They told us there was no need for reservation, as it was first-come-first served, which is cool, but also made us nervous at the same time because we had to ensure that we got there early enough to claim the area. We went there on a Sunday morning at 7 am, and it was available for us. We took several weeks to scope it out. The covered area has 6 picnic tables, as well as trash/recycle bins, BBQ area, and an electrical outlet box towards the main walkway. The outlet was very helpful for us to have our speakers. There is light inside of the box so you can see what you're plugging into. Something to note is that the tables are kind of dirty looking, so you may want to get some table cloths to cover them. The surface area of the tables are about 32 inches wide and 92 inches long. I would recommend definitely getting table cloths bigger than this surface area size, and also bring tape! It is also totally possible to hang banners at the top of the covering, but make sure you have someone tall enough to reach the beams. As for the bathrooms, they are fairly clean for a park and are spacious. There is a lot of nature which makes this park so unique. There is a lot of duck poop in certain areas, so beware! This park gets pretty busy in the evenings during the summer. The other features of District56 is that there is plenty of free parking, lots of field space, and there is essentially a senior community center with a cafe, and a recreational swimming area. As for the workout area, it is pretty nice because the have structures in which they provide guidance on how to use it, and also different level platforms. The recreational swimming area/aquatic center--you can host parties here, but it is limited in the hours you can reserve. Admission prices are pretty reasonable. On the day we went, there was a party earlier in the day, and they opened to the public around 1 pm. There was a line already forming about half an hour before opening time (lots of families), which was surprising. We perused the area, and it seems pretty nice, as there are lots of lounging areas under umbrellas. The thing that is kind of unfortunate is that the senior community center is closed on the weekends. This is important because if you're looking for a public restroom, you won't get access to that or the aquatic center unless you pay admission. Therefore, you have to walk all the way back to the park for a public restroom. I wished they put a public restroom right i between the community center and the aquatic center. All things considered, this is probably one of the nicest parks in Elk Grove!

The building also hosts a variety of secular activities, including an evening self-defense class. There are a lot of complaints by women of the knit and crochet group in how the yearly craft fair was handled and also in how Christine speaks to guests. She is very rude and disrespectful toward everyone. I am so very disappointed in this place. It's pretty, new and shiny on the outside but the staff and leadership is very poor. There was no apology and after speaking to the staff and teachers about it not ONE person was open to resolving my dissatisfaction. The two teachers I spoke to about it said that they ignore her and said I was letting the DIRECTOR WIN because I chose to leave this nasty place! I have revoked my membership and also complained to the Director Christine herself and two teachers and Renee the board member who was a witness to the Director's lack of an apology of publicly yelling and humiliating me in front of ASL class members. Everyone simply ignored me and had no reaction, comment or apology. This organization also is not culturally inclusive and has no plan to change this. Do not support the Senior Center. They are only interested in collecting your insurance money.
