Samuel & Bonnie Pannell Community Center - Nicely decorated in time for Halloween

In the main lobby on the left side there is a small information booth with an attendant who answered all my questions with a welcoming smile. Hung on the wall to her left is a large lucite organizer filled with flyers and leaflets with information on various community events. I asked about Sacramento's newly adopted recycle program and she explained how the program works and then handed me a new a recycle bin for under the kitchen sink, a roll of biodegradable, recycle bin, liners, and a coupon to use next time I have to purchase liners. I asked about the facilities and she shared that there is a community pool, a gym with workout, equipment, an indoor basketball court, as well as several courts outside in the back. This community center has a lot to offer and I'll definitely revisit in the future.

The location is central to the neighborhood and pretty walkable for those living nearby. There's a large and general clean parking lot, and the building itself is well-kept. Inside, there are several activity rooms or classrooms, 1 bigger auditorium/multi-purpose room/basketball courts gym, common areas where books & board/card games, table with seating, and lounging chairs are also available throughout. Outside there are grassy fields for sports, a very large lap swimming pool and a kid's pool with some water features to include water pipes that would shoot or dump water down and water slides for kids. All in all, this is a good community center. I think the outdoors facilities could use some update, but generally, the grounds outside and the building itself have both been kept in good condition for the most part.

The annual Filipino Fiesta is held every first Sunday of June at the Jose Rizal Community Center…read more(Florin Mall Drive) to celebrate Philippine Independence Day. It's definitely a showcase of Central Valley Filipino-ness, culture and talent! It's run by six Filipino American community organizations and promotes community and youth relations, educating on history, with cultural activities and other festival events. The highlights of the fiesta include a parade, live entertainment, eskrima & arnis tournaments, traditional Filipino food. All ages, free entry, purchases out of pocket. 2022 was the first in-person event since Covid! The Fiesta went from 10am-5pm. When I arrived around 11am, it was pretty packed and I had to parallel park on the side street rather than the main parking lots. Weather was that weird overcast sprinkly light wind which doesn't scream "June" summertime, but for being out on the grassy area it was ok for walking. They had a charity car show/contest (Team LoveHATE and Neu Era), many many vendor booths from sponsors such as SMUD, UC Davis Health, Vaccinate All 58, Kaiser Permanente, Cache Creek, East Lawn, Sac Asian Chamber of Commerce (shout-out to Nikki S.!) giving out free 10-pack N95 masks and up to 3 Covid tests and other fun stalls like QTEA Boba (taro, milk tea, thai tea), a candle shop, a sticker shop, Filipino wares/crafts like island dresses, fun shirts, bracelets, Filipino flags, etc. My fave was the MTPhotos Sac mini photobooth and raffle (shoutout Misty T.!). They had an outdoor stage for music, performers as well as an indoor stage with performances by Sinagtala, tinikling (bamboo traditional folk dance), kung fu demonstration, Zumba, an oldies band, Polynesian dancers. The food trucks were very popular. Official vendors were Hella Halo (halo-halo), Pinorrito, Daisy's Desserts, My Lumpia Lady, Duffy's Hot Dogs, Angry Asian Chef, and Sugarbar. They had some tables and chairs for people to sit and eat too. I saw people eating chicken adobo and rice, lumpia, bbq on a stick, pancit! I picked up a few sweet treats from Ube Galore Breads & More (Bay Area-based) -- ube eggpie and ube cassava to take home...delicious!

Technically the activity location is officially called the "New Aquatic Center" at 8025 Waterman Rd, not the Pat O'Brien Community Center but I'm leaving this review here for now until the "New Aquatic Center" gets its own business page. For only $30 for 4 classes, I signed up as something fun to do and cool off to end the summer, and to complement my Orangetheory workouts and Zumba classes. The 45-minute class is meant to help improve flexibility and range of motion, and to build cardiovascular fitness and muscular strength. I brought water shoes, a towel, swimming attire, and a hat. They didn't recommend any need for pool noodles. Check in at the window and after entering the gate, grab a pair of foam water dumbbells (black, blue, or purple -- I'm not too sure the difference) and choose a spot in the water. Winnie had a speaker with music playing and a whiteboard with the moves written out to follow along/refer to. The warm-up consisted of jogging a few laps in the water around the pool to start, followed by frog leaps around the pool. Lastly, butt-kicks underwater in place. First set was jumping West/North/East/South and back to center underwater. Next was the Superman, then Flutter Kicks for more core work. Then we did Front Raises with the water dumbbells. (The water dumbbells offer resistance underwater that will help tone and strengthen the arm muscles, abs, and back.) Set #2 consisted of Lateral Raises, a Standing Row, and Chest Fly moves with the water dumbbells. Finally, the cooldown was another jogging lap around the pool, one lap walking around the pool, then stretches for hamstrings, triceps, shoulders, neck, obliques, etc. It's a neat exercise alternative, and our instructor was Winnie (although her last class will be the August 13th as she's going back to college in SoCal). The class size isn't too big, and all ages represented! For the first meeting we were in the shallow end of the larger (laned) pool as there was only one lifeguard. They also have water aerobics offered Monday and Wednesday evenings 7:30-8:15PM, which continue into September and October (not sure about the Saturday ones). UPDATE: Instructor changed to Brittany (sp?) for remainder of the August Saturday sessions. Lots of parking. I know at the Pat O'Brien Community Center they also have Zumba classes, and Citizens Church meets on Sundays too. There's a walking path and basketball court too, sometimes they have craft fairs, car shows, and you might even catch Rico's Tamales for sale.

Yes, it is unfortunate that there's no freeway entrance or exit to this community and it will increase traffic on a normally sleepy side of East Sac, but I'm going to review the property itself since I have friends moving here. McKinley Village has a clubhouse that includes a small gym, swimming pool, spa, lounge, and kitchen area that residents can rent out for parties. Outside the closed clubhouse area is a neat children's playground and pickleball courts. The streets are lined with historic-looking street lights that match the ones in East Sac. The property is well-maintained (thanks to HOA fees) and the construction itself is well done compared to other new housing developments I've seen in Sacramento. Once everything is built, a new bridge is completed from McKinley Village to Midtown, and everyone moves in, I think it will be a nice, comfortable community to ride your bike through or take a stroll. There are cool pieces of art here too, which give it an extra touch of class. So, no matter how controversial it has been, McKinley Village is here to stay and they've done a great job.

It includes 2 large large dining tables that each seat 10 and has additional folding tables - this last time they were two 8' tables (previously had 10' tables) and nice black chairs for each. There is outdoor furniture for good weather days and opens up to community park on the opposite side of the entrance for kids to stretch their legs. Parking is just street parking so not abundant but sufficient.

They also have some events for teens here, which is nice, as teens need healthy and positive activities to participate in so as not to get into trouble and not become involved with illegal activities and groups.
