And just like that ... jury duty is completed…read more I know most people bemoan having to show up for jury duty, let alone serve for jury duty. This was an amazing exceptional experience. The pool of juror's checks in and waits in the juror's lounge, while being entertained with quick films about the process. They were actually informative, despite my snarky comment. The Federal Court only brings in a selected pool of people, so you're not sitting with countless others waiting and waiting. Once inside the courtroom, after everyone is sworn in, and jury selection happens, the judge is very clear about conduct, breaks, and length of service. The court's clerks and staff are extremely nice, helpful, and go out of their way to make the jurors feel at ease. Parking at a selected lot is validated, and they gladly provide a letter for your employer. It was a great experience, and I would gladly go back to serve again.

I've lived in this area in my whole life and I've seen this building a million times. The other day…read moreI figured it was finally time to see it up close and find out what it's all about. I knew from having worked in government before that the building is actually offices for The state of California but what I learned while I was there is that the building was completed in the late 1990s and was designed to resemble ancient Mesopotamian steeped pyramid temples. I stopped by with my pup just to check it out and walk around but parking was much tighter than I expected. There is a parking garage but I didn't want to pay just to check out the building for 5 minutes. There was a couple picnicking on the front lawn of the building with their dog off leash and the security guard walked out immediately which made me nervous about overstaying my welcome or accidentally parking somewhere that I shouldn't. The building was very cool to see in person and looks nice. I took a cute picture of my pup in front of it and went on with my day. If you like unusual buildings or local landmarks, this is fairly easy. Quick stop if you're in the area.

I like different styles of architecture so I was impressed and took some photos but you don't really need any more than 10 minutes here. Previous Yelpers mentioned a cafeteria but I tried and was told it's only for employees of the building. There's Tree House Cafe across the street which was nice with a large outside patio and had it's own resident cat. There is a pathway alongside the river behind the building so you can make this a nice loop with the I Street Bridge.

The 82,000 sq feet granite building has seven floors and is masterfully crafted with columns of granite flowing upward too the top. The sixth floor has terra cotta figurines which can be seen from the outside of the building. Knowing the growth and revitalization of down town Sacramento with the new "Golden 1 Arena". An real estate investment fund bought the building in 2015. Although the first floor is currently empty, a few state agencies do occupy a few of the floors above. I must say there's events like fires and weather plus environmental related scary issues that deterred me from moving back. Although I have a lot of close family living in California most of my family is on the East Coast not far from my Manhattan home. I'm highly recommending if you want to move to the West Coast!

Shout out to the West Sacramento/ Freeport/ Delta area…read more.. After having lunch at the Dinky Diner and visiting the Schoolhouse museum in Clarksburg, we drove back into Sacramento. But instead of driving back towards West Sacramento on South River Road, we drove on the Freeport Bridge to Highway Road 160. The bridge took us over the Sacramento River. I'm not going try to describe the Freeport Bridge in detail. Yelper Lucy wrote a concise epic masterpiece on describing that historic engineering gem of a movable bridge. It was built in 1929. The bridge designer was Joseph Strauss (Strauss Bascule Bridge Company) ; the same designer/company of the Golden Gate Bridge. Near the Freeport bridge, on the Highway 160 side, is a gravel area big enough for cars to park. I noticed it's a fishing spot. Plus on the weekends there is a BBQ vendor. I happen upon the BBQ guy; he has a large Santa Maria type grill. Right on the spot he BBQs spatchcocked whole chickens $18 and rack of ribs. I forgot how much the ribs costed. The first batch of food is ready around noon. He'll cut up the chicken and ribs into pieces and box it up. I bought the chicken. It was fantastic. Nicely marinated. Tender chicken, deep smoky flavor with a beautiful charred, crispy skin. Mmm.

The Freeport historic bridge is a beautiful sight. This bridge is a bascule type of bridge which…read moreuses counterweights on either side to lift the middle section so large barges and freight boats may pass through. I was touring the historic bridges in Sacramento and this was my first stop. If you look at the pictures of this bridge you will see the counter weights at either end suspended above the entrance and/ or exit. However, to see this live is quite spectacular. If you drive over this bridge and you happen to have to be in a vehicle with a sun roof, I recommend to open it and look up as soon as you cross onto this bridge. That way you will observe first hand the intense beauty of the structure of the bridge and its counterweights. The Freeport bridge is extremely narrow and is made with treaded steel plates meant to provide traction to the vehicles which cross it. The counter weights look like enormous blocks of cement, and it's quite fascinating to look up as you drive underneath them. Another fun experience is the sound of the resonance all car tires will make when crossing this bridge. I hope you come to see this historical fully operating Bascule - Counter weight bridge. Its free to cross and is an interesting historical landmark to visit with friends, family and by oneself. Enjoy!
