We were given a bowl of soup which definitely didn't look like seafood chowder. We tried and decided it was potato leek, so I took it back. The server had misunderstood, not realizing that we wanted our chowder first. Apparently seafood chowder isn't soup. Whether that's a lack of experience and training or a regional terminology difference, I don't know. Chowder was delicious. The haddock, which she said she would cook fresh, was coated then cooked to dark brown, so it was over-cooked and dried out. Carrots and parsnips had been boiled then sat in a warming table and were dried out and rather flavorless. Green beans were blah. Mashed potatoes were good, parsley sauce was good but needed the spark of lemon which I added myself.

The beds were comfortable. Amenities included wash clothes, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, fan, full-length mirror, large TV, and bottled water. The shower pressure sucked but the water gets hot. Our toilet seat was broken which should have been caught by housekeeping. Overall nice place & we would stay here again.

From the friendly greeting from Margrite and Peter, our hosts, to the ever so accommodating staff our stay here was the best of our trip. The accommodations were beyond comfortable with several areas to relax and take in the Atlantic views or sit in the evening by a quiet fireplace. The breakfasts included your choice of Full Irish, smoked mackerel over scrambled eggs or the fluffiest tastiest pancakes you'll ever have. Not to mention the scones, granola, yogurt and fresh fruit waiting for you each morning. We actually extended our stay another night and will definitely be returning on our next trip to Ireland.

It was our second…read morebargain two night hotel break in Donegal, having travelled to here from Annagry and having spent three weeks in France shortly before we made it to Donegal. The hotel has limited wifi, which worked well around reception but we couldn't get it to work in the restaurant or breakfast rooms. It didn't work in our room. There are a number of brochures available in the reception promoting various attractions including the nearby Finntown railway, which runs along the edge of a huge brown trout lake in the shadow of a mountain and was fascinating. This entire county has to be one of the friendliest places on earth. No matter where we went, shopped, ate, toured and wandered around everyone was just so warm, friendly and welcoming. This hotel was no different; open friendly hard working people. The hotel was comfortable with our room a decent size, good decor, a double & single bed and a large bathroom. There was a flat screen tv on the wall. The food we had (haddock & chips €10) and prawn cocktail (€8) and night two we both had steak special) was all very good, fairly priced, the stout was excellent and the white wine served icily crisp. It was hectically busy in the restaurant especially on the Thursday night of our stay, mainly due to their sirloin steak special, €15 for a ten ounce steak, French fried onions, chips, peas and a pepper sauce. A few musicians also perform on Thursday nights. I'm sure the hard working staff are exhausted at the end of the night. We were tired just watching them. Parking is very limited at the front of the hotel and while there's a car park at the rear of the hotel there's no access from the car park. Breakfast was fine, the porridge superb followed by an Irish brekky fry of fried egg, pork sausage, bacon, black & white pudding and tomato. But we do restrict our intake of this sort of food. It's not just this hotel it's common in hotels to find cheap meats; cheap eggs, plastic skinned, fatty, salty sausage, fatty, salty, white pudding, cheap bacon and awful powdered coffee in hotels from one to five star. I'd prefer if hotels would use their buying power to purchase natural skinned meats, and better quality ingredients with a bit less fat and a bit less salt. I'd like to see the days of powdered coffee coming to a close - real coffee is so much better. We would return here.

We started with a bottle of 3 Wooly Sheep New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc wine that was excellent. Next was the special of the day seafood casserole. After dinner, I enjoyed an Irish whiskey and my wife had an Irish coffee. We could tell the seafood casserole was professionally prepared. It had shrimp, salmon and a white fish like haddock in a white sauce. All of is was covered with a layer of mashed potatoes. On the side was broccoli, carrots, rutabaga and Brussel sprouts. There was a lot of food and it tasted great. We will return to this restaurant again when we are back in the area.

While generally okay, it was mostly just a bit underwhelming and very average. We had got a deal off one of the voucher pages which included a spa treatment and brekkie both mornings. Firstly, my spa treatment was a back, neck and shoulder massage and while not the worst that I've had, was far from the best. The relaxation suite was quite nice but the jacuzzi was tiny and overcrowded when we were there. The breakfast was overall poorish enough in my opinion. I ordered the baked egg but it was so runny as to be practically inedible (for me anyway) The selection of breads, fruits etc was again just not four star. I didn't actually bother with coming down for breakfast the following day to be honest but my partner did pick up a few croissants for me to nibble with my coffee in the room. I did have a club sandwich later that night in the Middleton Bar and that was delicious in fairness. Plus their cocktails are pretty amazing too!!

Castle Dargan Hotel is not a castle, but a modern built hotel. It is situated in a lovely country setting with wonderful mature trees and views of the surrounding hills and the golf course. It is supposed to be a four star Hotel but it is more deserving of 3 stars. Our accommodation was in an apartment which is in a separate block - very industrial looking - away from the main hotel, as all the hotel rooms were fully booked. While the bedroom was cosy and warm, the bathroom was very small but most alarming for a Hotel of this caliber was the dirty state of the shower! The reception area of the hotel is very austere and cold, badly lacking a fireplace for the winter months, and the main bar which looks out over the first tee of the golf course, was uninviting and freezing cold - but could be due to the floor to ceiling windows and the rainy weather at the time we were there - however, it lacked complete atmosphere. We had dinner in the adjoining restaurant at the reasonable price of approx. €27 for 3 courses and this was really delicious with lovely, friendly waiting staff and a very good choice. Breakfast the next morning was also very good too with a reasonable choice on offer. However, my biggest gripe was with the spa treatment..yes I know it was included in the price for the overnight stay...but it was such a disappointment. I had opted for the balneotherapy and boy was I sorry! Having been given a nice cosy warm dressinggown and slippers, and guided to the supposedly relaxation area to wait for my therapist - this area was crowded with women who sat around chatting out loud, the room was far too bright and certainly not relaxing! Eventually the therapist came and took my to the room for the balneotherapy bath and she explained that it would take 20 minutes and then promptly left the room. The temperature of the bath was just barely tepid and utterly disappointing as a result. When I complained afterwards, with my goose-pimpled body, I was told that there was a problem with the water in this area and the Therapist apologised profusely. Luckily, I was able to go the steam room immediately to heat up! I passed on my complaint to the main receptionist later and she immediately called the Spa Manager to relay my concerns and once again, apolgised profusely. I have no quibble really with the staff who were all very attentive and friendly, but the place seems to seriously lack a good management structure, particularly in the Spa area. Incidentally, my friend who had booked a massage, also complained of the cold, the long wait for her massage, despite booking in advance, and the fact that the therapist yawned constantly while massaging, which was very offputting and ineffective for my friend. Perhaps, I will try the golf next time as I understand the course is very good!

The area is sparse, summed up as splendid isolation and it is desolate yet stunning, even on a breezy cold afternoon, so it was a stop for coffee, soft drinks and the restrooms in the hotel. The servers were charm personified. We did see food being served to other guests in the dog friendly bar with typical Sligo hospitality - generous portions - we even petted a pooch. We had English friends with us on the trip and they had showed some interest in what we call 'The Troubles' so Warrenpoint and Derry sure were on our itinerary, but this quiet, peaceful place was a scene of death for someone related to the British Royal Family: a Louis Francis Albert Victor Nicholas Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma commonly known as Lord Mountbatten who was holidaying at his summer home, Classiebawn Castle, on the Mullaghmore Peninsula in Sligo, where he lobster potted and fished for tuna. He departed this mortal coil on the same day eighteen British paratroopers were killed at Warrenpoint, four miles from my home and we heard the blasts, the deadliest assault against the British army in our 'Troubles'. We strolled the near empty beach and the still harbour a while then off to our hotel.
