Although this looks really delicious.. it wasn't..tacos had some flavor. But consome very very oily... not very enjoyable. came out in a timely manner. Girl at the window was not very helpful and not good customer service..definitely don't see us going back..

Open for business at the corner of Craddock and old RR12, on Sunny's corner lot.

Hey, I'm a new fan! Not as big as Big Daddy of legend, service not as much of a hug as Laura's, but I got a $6 entree that made me happy. There is a jar for tips at the window. I've been waiting to catch this place open in its new location, and today at quarter to noon was finally my day. I asked about all three of the headliners at the bottom of the right hand menu but only the Mulita was available. The guys gave me a bag about ten minutes later which included a good napkin and a baggie of salsa without my requesting anything. Baggie, did you say? Yes. No worries, I cut one corner off with scissors and we were in business. Came with a fat lime wedge on a small foam plate topped with foil. Stayed warm til I got home, and proved to be a nice modest lunch. The bistec and sausage were thoroughly cooked, bite sized and evenly distributed, the cilantro/lime was fresh, cheese was sufficient, I even liked the tortillas. They use Herdez guacamole salsa or something very like. The older menus posted on Yelp include buche and lengua, which were no longer listed on today's posters. Fortunately there are plenty of other options unless you're vegetarian, in which case it's breakfast tacos or a quesadilla for you. Sign says they do birria Fri/Sat and I think I have my heart set on trying the barbacoa torta next time. See you there! ----update 17 Dec 2022 $9 Torta barbacoa update. *** A-ok today. The menu listed avocado but I got a baggie of the same Herdez-y avocado salsa again. Tasty, but not the same as the solid stuff. I get it, though, beef and avocado weren't the cheap options to start with in the before times either. It was good to see a few people gnoshing at the picnic tables and someone else waiting on their grub when I arrived. My order was ready even faster today and the torta perfectly filled the size of paper bag that's just smaller than the standard lunch size. They'd tucked in the salsa baggie and two of the good napkins, and it stayed warm on the journey home. The torta bun was the nice spot between soft and crusty--soaking up most of the liquids so there was minimal grease leakage on the paper bag when I got home, but eating it wasn't a Sahara experience for my mouth. Before I say this next bit, let me explain I eat moist brisket, not dry. I eat the fat on my steaks and chops. I know what barbacoa is and what makes it moist. I know what it can be. So when I say my first few bites were more fat than meat please believe me. To be clear, it was NOT gristle, which would have bothered me more, nor grease. Likely bad luck so much ended up at one end and not more evenly distributed, but however it happened it was a detraction this round. Decent size, about as long as from my wrist to the tip of my little finger. I could have split this with Mr R + a side for each and we both would have been content. Next time looking at trying their chicken or al pastor.

The tacos al pastor are delicious! Make sure to get them with cheese and avocado, and a Jarritos soda.

Their tacos remind me of Mexico City. They are consistently delicious, quick service, and although it's a truck in a gas station parking lot, it has lots to offer

Oh my gosh! I've looked all over Austin to find a really good Mexican restaurant but to no avail! San Marcos has pulled through y'all! This place is it! Bomb tacos! My daughter who is notorious for never, ever, ever, eating Mexican food tried it and couldn't get enough of their bistec tacos! Holy moly this is the place to go! The staff was great, friendly, definitely will be driving from Austin back to this little place for their awesome tacos!

My wife had visited years ago, and a close friend had recently recommended it, so it seemed like a good opportunity to give it a try. The building itself is beautiful. We parked in the rear lot and entered through the bakery, which immediately caught our attention. There was an impressive variety of pastries on display, and the kids were quickly informed they could each pick one out later if they behaved. The restaurant also has several colorful walls and decorative displays that make for fun photo opportunities and selfies. We were seated at a large table toward the back near the restrooms. Service was friendly throughout the meal and reasonably attentive despite the restaurant being busy. To drink, I ordered the jalapeño prickly pear margarita, while my wife chose a peach, coconut, and strawberry margarita. Both had excellent flavor. My wife's drink was especially memorable--it tasted like a cross between a strawberry margarita, peach bellini, and piña colada. The only thing missing was a little more tequila, as both drinks leaned more toward the sweet side than the spirited side. The chips were slightly thicker than I typically prefer but still enjoyable, and the salsa selection was excellent with a pleasant level of heat. The kids ordered bean and cheese tacos from the children's menu, and the restaurant happily substituted fruit for rice without any upcharge, which we appreciated. For our entrees, my wife ordered the vegetarian enchiladas while I chose the fajitas. The fajitas were good overall, though the meat portion felt a bit light and seemed stretched by a generous amount of green peppers. The rice, however, was excellent and one of the better components of the meal. Before leaving, we visited the bakery. The kids enjoyed their donuts and cookie, while I opted for a guava empanada that turned out to be one of the highlights of the visit. Overall, Casa Maria impressed me more with its atmosphere, bakery, and creative drinks than with the food itself. It's a beautiful restaurant with a fun family-friendly vibe, a strong bakery program, and some excellent margarita flavors. I'd gladly stop back for the pastries and drinks--and if they ever decide to be a little more generous with the tequila, even better.

Showing up around 7pm on a Wednesday evening, I had my choice of seats, ranging from the bar, indoor, and outdoor. Typically, when dining alone, I head for the bar to save tables for groups. But fortunately they weren't very busy so I didn't feel bad taking one of the smaller tables. My server recommended their margheritas but I didn't want to drink alone haha..I would love to try it next time though! I started with the salsa sampler which came with tortilla chips and three different house made salsas. I couldn't stop eating it! I kept seeing reviews of the fish tacos and heard another table ordering it, so I decided to get that as well. The pico de gallo, aioli, and pickled onions in the description just got me. Admittedly, it was just ok. I was not a big fan of the fish tacos but to be truthful, I can't recall when I last had an amazing fish tacos. I probably should have just gotten the carne asada plate that I was initially eying. This just means I have to go back. I'm not in Texas often, but despite there being so many options and new places to try, I look forward to the opportunity to return to Balcon Comedor Y Bar.

I was doing research on somewhere to go for a post Valentines Day date. Going out specifically on…read morethat day is a ridiculous waste of time and extra money to "manufacture romance". Silly. Anyway, I came across this place and the pictures of the food looked amazing. Oh I should probably warn you right now.... If you were raised on "Tex-Mex" or you're a Texas snowflake with thin skin, please skip this part of the review until the end of my rant. With that out of the way. * Incoming Rant * Why is it that 90%+ of Mexican food in Texas is utter garbage? If you do a search on Yelp and look at the pictures of what barely passes for "Mexican Food" it looks like dog food. Compare Garcia's food and presentation to Balcón and let me know which you prefer. I mean seriously, most of the restaurants serve food that looks like it came from a 1980's microwave TV dinner! So many places use that weird yellow generic government cheese, the refried beans look like they came from a WWII can and almost everything is unseasoned ground beef! The closest I can usually find is cubed beef. Have you guys never heard of shredded beef? Depending on where you go they MIGHT shred the beef and use it in birria tacos. Here's a thought. Use it in OTHER things! Shredded beef enchiladas, tortas, chimichangas, burritos and for goodness sakes, USE SEASONING! In the past people traveled around the world solely for herbs and spices but for some reason restaurants in Texas hate using them. One more thing and I'm done. Look at the presentation of the dishes here. The food LOOKS GOOD! The food looks colorful, vibrant and tasty. Not like it was cobbled together by a cowboy on a ranch in the 1800s. See how they make use of Queso Fresco, radishes, guacamole, cabbage and other things to bring life to the dishes. I've been to places in Arizona, New Mexico and Southern California and they GET IT. Make food delicious and good looking and the people will come and come back. *sigh* ok, I'm done... * End of Rant * Now back to our regularly scheduled review... We ordered the Ensenada Fish Tacos, Carne Asada Fries, and the Surf & Turf Quesadilla. All 3 dishes were excellent! The fish was beer battered and not the Gorton's frozen fish sticks that I've found in many restaurants in the Mid-West. Disgusting. Also, it was a massive portion of fish which was probably the largest I've seen in a fish taco in a long time. The asada fries were amazing. Not only is that a hard to find dish in Texas they also used the really good crispy fries that are actually edible the next day. Most places use the cheap generic square fries (think fries that are usually sold with hot dogs or hamburgers at a carnival) that taste terrible the next day. Usually you'll eat everything but the fries if you have leftovers, but not here. Balcón went for the good seasoned fries. The quesadilla was really good too. Perfectly cooked shrimp and juicy carne asada. The one gripe I did have was the white and black checkerboard paper that was used under the food. That started to disintegrate very quickly and as I was cutting into my food I kept having to pull it out of the food. Small complaint and easily forgivable. I'm not a person who's worried much about ambiance. As long as someone isn't trying to stab me while I eat or the restaurant is located next to an outhouse I'm good. But seriously it's a cool place. I like the indoor/outdoor vibe with the two open garage doors. We ate on the inside next to the door which was really nice. Overall, it was a great experience. I pray that more restaurants follow Balcón and put emphasis on presentation, not using microwave grade food, all while doing it at a reasonable price. We will definitely be coming back, as we need to try more of the menu. I tip my hat to you owner of Balcón. You definitely stand out in a sea of bland, generic "Tex Mex" restaurants.

San Martians have incredible gem here. We had the breakfast barbacoa and pork chop plates plus a lengua taco. First, the lengua taco came out on warm corn tortillas, and the lemgua was tender and in sliced bite siced chunks. By itself, it was pretty good - with ANY of their salsas, even better. The wife had the barbacoa taco plate: barbacoa was all meat, great tasting but not greasy. I had the pork chop plate and I i must say, it's one of the most flavorful and juicy pork chops I've had. Both the barbacoa and pork chop plate came with delicious refreid beans that had tons of flavor. The other side that came with the plates were potatoes. Therese were freshly made, soft and pillowy and nicely seasoned. You know how you know your food is os perfect? When you dont have to add salt or pepper and here, this was the case here. And let's not skip over their homemade salsa. There's at least 8 homemade salsas of varying flavors and heat level. All are outstanding and you should try them all. Even their hottest ones have so much flavor you'll want more even though your mouth may be on fire. Heat and flavor - they've perfected each and every one of their salsas.
