Finally found an authentic Mexican restaurant near Oriental,NC! This is important because my husband grew up on the border of Mexico and wants Mexican food at least twice a week. Taquería San Luis made him happy and so I'm happy. We had delicious steak tacos with grilled steak and onions topped with cilantro. This was freshly cooked after you ordered not sitting around waiting to be microwaved. You order at the counter and grab your own table. I think if they added a bit more ambience and some wait staff in the evenings they would expand their business significantly. You clean up when you are done. There were five of us and our bill was $94. Best place in town for true street tacos and we eat here often! Food is amazing - when you can make chorizo tacos or carne asada tacos taste that amazing, you deserve 5 stars. No menus, so you can step away from the counter to figure out what you want. The one and only menu is taped to the counter where you order. Not the best set-up for newcomers! Food was good. We had chips and salsa to share, I had a chicken Sopes, hubby had a chicken Taco Salad, daughter had a burrito (MASSIVE!), and son-in-law had asada tacos. Friendly staff, excellent service, and excellent food! The restaurant is a little on the warm side during the summer months, but the food is worth it. In the past, they had some issues with being out of some crucial ingredients. On multiple occasions, we would arrive and they would be out of chicken or cheese. This has not been the case lately. I typically go to El Taco Loco as they're usually more convenient to get to for me. I don't see a lot of cars parked out front when I go by typically, but I also avoid James City when possible. They've been around for a while and the Yelp reviews looked good, so I gave it a shot. I've never been here before but it was nice that you could see them cooking the meat fresh on the flat top as soon as you walk in. I got three tacos, one Barbacoa, one Chorizo and one Asada. All three were good. The Barbacoa had a good roasted flavor and the Asada had good grilled flavor, but was over cooked and a little dry. The Chorizo wasn't too spicy and was chopped up well. I appreciated the sautéed (slightly caramelized) onions in place of the typical diced fresh onion. Nice non-traditional addition. They came with a side of limes and radishes and I opted for verde sauce as per my usual. I also got an Al Pastor Sope. This was definitely my favorite item. They put plenty of meat and toppings on it and finished it was a nice dollop of puréed avocado. The queso fresco flavor stood out as did the meat. I didn't notice any pineapple in with the meat but it had great flavor regardless. If you have never had a Sope, it's basically a hand pattied masa cake, similar in size to an English muffin, but denser. Dense enough to support the weight of the toppings. You'll know it's a good one when you can't avoid making a mess while eating it. I highly recommend trying one! Overall I was very satisfied and I'll definitely come back! read more

Awesome joint, I'm surprise I didn't visit here even sooner, the restaurant is a medium size restaurant with a pretty easy menu to order from, you can see all the cooking a prepping going down which is pretty cool I live the family vibe they got going on in there, I order a barbacoa torta which was absolutely and a lengua taco which was cooked to perfection. If you want simple, traditional, and fresh, this is the place to go. The food is simple and delicious. The menu is short, and sticks to the reliable favorites. You order your food up front and seat yourself. They bring the food to you and you clear your own table. The no frills approach works well in this small restaurant with around 10 tables. Being new to the area, My family and I on a quest to find the best Mexican restaurant in New Bern. It's a small restaurant with very friendly staff. I ordered the carne asada Burrito and it was larger than chipotle's typical Burrito. It was very good and flavorful. They did not skimp on the meat. I also tried a chicken gordita and it was phenomenal, I should have ordered 2 or 3 of those. It's not your average chips and dip Mexican restaurant. We had a side of chips and queso which was ok. Every time my wife and I are in the area we make it our mission to go here. This restaurant is incredible and has some of the best Mexican food I've ever had. Their burritos are massive and loaded with plenty of different ingredients. The tacos are very good as well especially with the variety of meats.
