Shockingly, we ended up paying almost $20 more through the restaurant. No breakdown, no itemized receipt--just a total. We didn't even realize the overcharge until we got home. That's completely unacceptable. And to top it off, the caldo de res and chile relleno tacos were disgusting--bland, greasy, and poorly prepared. The food and the service were both a big letdown. This Taqueria is amazing! The Chicago metro area has amazing Mexican food in general. And Elgin crushes it in the Mexican cuisine department. There are at least a dozen great Taquerias in Elgin. This is not a fine dining experience. This is a place to get the best steak tacos in Elgin and the best steak tacos I have had anywhere. The place is a tiny Taqueria. It would qualify as a Dive in the world of Triple D. If you think these tacos are anything but great, you should probably rethink your ability to critique food. We've only had the tacos and they're very good, at least the pastor, pollo and chorizo. We're regulars at most of the Mexican restaurants in Elgin and Cokito ranks right up there. If you need utensils you'll need to ask for them. If you want your taco with cilantro and onion ask for that too. Otherwise it's with tomatoes kind of American style. The chips and salsa are a nice touch. Parking and dine-in table space are at a premium. Small restaurant on a corner lot. Definitely legitimate place. read more

I have not had their tacos but their steak quesadillas are really good. They even have veggie options for quesadillas. Their tortillas are handmade which are very fresh and tasty. I ordered fries on the side and it even came with a small bag of chips and salsa verse (love) and salsa roja. Will be back for more. read more

Visited this place for the first time cause of the eating of the place and I can say I did not like, first of all I order a torta only decent portion was the bolillo itself the toppings were all low portions especially for $9?? A "hole in the wall" as one might say, parking can be a pain at times and the seating inside is a bit minimal and cramped but I've been going there for years now and every single time I leave, I look forward to coming back. The tacos are perfectly made, burritos are tightly wrapped with your choice of protein. Not feeling like eating too heavy? No problem, they've got soups, seafood and tostadas. Feeling like going all in? Pick the "huarache" or "quesadilla", both handmade and very filling (mainly due to the arm length sizes). Vegetarian? they've got some options for ya too. All in all, haven't gone there before? undecided? Conflicted? Don't know where to eat next? Try El Cokito! Ps. No one mentions this until you find out the hard way (has happened to me before), the item "flor de calabaza", is not always in season. In the summer, the resturant is usually stocked up on this item, but mid winters...let's just say there's like a 45% chance. Also, I believe they are shortstaffed due to Covid, so please be patient. I ordered a hawaiian torta and flavor want that great. The sandwich was falling apart on how hard the pineapple bits were. Even the avocado was big pieces that tore apart the sandwich. I also had chicken tacos which thought they would be chicken bits. I asked for the onion and cilantro on the side not knowing the chicken style is like tenga. It was shredded with red sauce on it. First, let me preface this review by stating that I have eaten from many different Mexican restaurants in my life and have only been able to call one place a 4 star restaurant. This, by far, is the best steak taco dinner I have ever eaten in my life (homemade aside). I would definitely recommend this place to everyone. It is a small location to dine in, parking is difficult but the service is good and the prices are nominal. Just remember to ask for utensils and napkins before leaving (the free chips make up it). The staff is bilingual (English and Spanish) and the location is quite clean (even if the surrounding area doesn't look like it). They do take credit card (I have had experience with places that don't) and are open later than most locations in the area. In summation, this place is a prime example of how a restaurant should operate. They don't cut corners and take the time to cook the meal properly. As a result of their tremendous service and excellent meal, I not only recommend this place but I go out of my way to state the following: if you are in a 15 mile radius of this location and are hungry for great Mexican cuisine, make it a point to stop by and treat yourself to a outstanding meal at Taqueria El Cokito. read more

Did I want to eat Burger King, which I know to be awful and cost about $10, or take a chance on one of the many (MANY) tiny taquerias in Elgin for about the same price. I went at lunch hour on a Saturday, and it was *packed*! I'll say, I was the only guy speaking English inside - my Spanish is OK, so I'm comfy with that, but that's what the dining experience is like. Everyone was friendly and service was quick! Food was great - for $7-8, I got 3 steak tacos with all the fixings, chips, and a jumbo horchata (if you've never had horchata, have horchata and thank me later!). Better than I expected. I was building a house, so super hungry, and the meal did not disappoint. Admittedly, this will probably not be the best Mexican meal you've had in your life. The food is good, but they tend to screw you over if you order al pastor tortas. They don't give you the right kind of meat, I have received chorizo and tuna so far instead of pork. They use the sweet sauce, but they screw you over on the meat. I have no idea why they try to cover it up. read more

This place was interesting. First, there is no parking to speak of. So find a spot on the street or a nearby street. We went to a nearby street. Next, I'm not sure what they're going for here. When do they cook? I stood there for five minutes and walked out with two meals for friends of mine. I never saw anything get cooked or even heated up. The setup didn't allow me to see exactly what was happening, but it looked like the food was cooked in advance and just sitting there. They didn't have any other customers during the dinner hour, so I can only guess the quality of the pre-cooked food that was sitting in a warmer. Now my real beef with this place: He made up a price. Literally just said: it's $25. It was not $25 worth of anything. But, they've for you here. There's no where else in the immediate vicinity that I knew of to grab dinner. I got the Giant Torta, and while the bread was indeed giant the ingredients were only enough for a regular sized torta. I ended up throwing the top part of the bread out and folding it up like a taco so I had a decent ingredient to bread ratio. Also I didn't get any hot sauce with it. Bummer.
