a plate of mexican food
Astrya J.

I had the quesadilla with pork. I had the pork because they were out of steak. It was pretty good. Kinda reminiscent of what you might find in the Texas town I am from- where there are Mexican food trucks all over. I didn't care for the tortilla that was used but overall it was very flavorful. I really like how the pork was cooked which surprised me because I usually don't eat pork. They take credit cards. Service is very fast and friendly.

I am so glad I did because I have been hearing about how good this boudin was for a while now. Jamison usually requests that you message him on facebook to place an order because he sells out frequently. I did not do that this time, I took a chance and I am glad he didn't sell out. You see, I am a bit of a boudin snob and fell in love with boudin before it became a popular craze in nola. I also feel no one in nola can come close the flavor and texture of cajun country out in Scott LA boudin. I bought the boudin. It was cold. He gave instructions on how to hear it up and it did not entail just heating it up in the microwave. He said to put the oven on 400 I beleive and heat it for about 10 minutes, I think it was. I do so and waited about 10 more minutes to cool. The texture of the stuffing was a little mushy but I found nothing wrong with that. In fact, I had tried another local boudin link that was almost crunchy rice inside and I did not care for that. It appears the best local boudin is Jamison, cochon butcher, Chris' Specialty Meats and Butcher Block. Jamison's stands out from those other ones because it has a distinct flavor to it with that meaty smoked flavor. It was very good. The boudin had a good even rice to meat ratio and I found it had more spice than most NOLA boudin but less spice than most Scott LA boudin. I liked that the casing had a snap when I bit into it since I prefer my boudin links smoked. Generally that is the rest when it is oven heated as well. Overall it is a great boudin and I can't wait ti catch Jamison again at the best pop up or festival.

Jamison easily falls in my top 5 list and I have tried boudin from over 100 different shops. My top 5 in no order is Jamison, Charlie T's, NuNus, Johnson boucaniere and Legnons boucherie. You need to catch him at a farmers market or contact him on Facebook. Best to order ahead because I have stopped by the Mandeville farmers market plenty times after 11:00 AM and he was sold out. What I like about this boudin is it packs a lot of flavor and you can pick up on the different ingredients as you are eating it. No doubt good quality. Many places make boudin that have one simple spicy flavor profile and many taste pretty similar. I could easily tell Jamison's apart from somewhere like best stop, Dons or any of the boudin mills that just worry about cranking out quantity. Give Jamison's a shot, you won't be disappointed.

La Catrina - Sampler Platter

It's perfect for when I want to treat family or friends to a laid-back dining experience without all the fuss. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the service is always friendly and attentive. Whenever we come, we usually start with the appetizer sampler platter--it's the perfect way to try a little bit of everything and share around the table. It pairs wonderfully with a couple of their cocktails or a cold beer, making it easy to settle in and unwind. As for the main dishes, we keep coming back for the steak fajita salad and the chicken quesadillas. Both are consistently flavorful, generously portioned, and feel like real comfort food.

La Catrina is a new (as of April 2005) Mexican restaurant in the Freret St. space formerly occupied…read moreby Sarita's Grill, not to be confused with that homophonous weather event of 2005 spelled with a 'K'. IYKYK. The previous tenant's simple decor has been brought up a notch with a touch of gloss and color. The Cuban bowls and sandwiches of the old restaurant are (sadly) gone, replaced by a glossy, broader menu more typical of chain Mexican places like On the Border or Chi-Chi's¹. Chile Rellenos, a favorite of mine that has become somewhat less universal in today's Tex-Mex universe, are on the menu. I ordered one cheese and one steak, and both came under a red sauce topped with a light smattering of melted cheese. Not too heavy, and lighter than the cheese sauces I've seen rellenos typically buried in at other places. For my Pennsylvania-born octogenarian dining partner, a plate of chicken quesadillas earned her enthusiastic approval. The meal started with light crispy chips and a chunky tomato salsa served in a decanter. The salsa tasted fresh, redolent with tomato flavor but milder than I would have liked. Fajitas are also on the menu, and I'll be back to try those. In all, La Catrina has a modern feel: they have fajitas, there's a Taco Tuesday special, and they have a full bar with cocktails. There's a surcharge for credit card purchases, approximately three precent (a $32 check would have been $33 by card). One minor issue was the very loud telenovela being enjoyed at high volume by our server. Much as it pained me to come between a soap-opera fan and her story, my dining partner and I could not hear each other across the table. Our server graciously agreed to turn down the sound. The glossy menu made me wonder whether La Catrina is a chain. Yelp! lists another "La Catrina" on Anson Street on the Westbank, but it's got a small menu set up for delivery--does not look related. A "La Catrina" in Media, Pennsylvania has a different menu and graphic design and is probably not connected. (It is the kind of Mexican place my Pennsylvanian dining partner would like, much as she enjoyed this one.) Regarding chains, I remember being surprised and somewhat amazed to learn that Felipe's here in New Orleans for years had single sister restaurant all the way up in Harvard Square. Felipe's has since expanded to many more locations, but when they had just two hundreds of miles apart, I found that interesting (though you might not). ¹ In writing up this piece, I learned that Chi-Chi's closed everywhere except Austria (?!) over 20 years ago, but is now being revived in the US. Ya learn something every day.
