A relatively new addition to the Ipswich dining scene, Pumpyard Bar & Brewery (or Four Hearts…read moreBrewing Company - the name appears to be used interchangeably) has become one of our regular eats - I'd even go as far as calling it our go-to restaurant. And judging by how busy the place is every time we go - I'm guessing we aren't alone. They serve bar-style food like burgers, wraps, chips etc, but with a fancy twist such as Chili Cheese Fries and Beer ice cream. The portions are not huge, but the prices are also quite reasonable. Their Wednesday night special $12 ribs are absolutely delicious. Pumpyard Bar & Brewery is the first and only brewery in Ipswich since 1903, and being a brewery, there is always a good variety of beer to be had - both in-house brewed as well as more common bottled beer. Some of their brewed beer is really interesting, like their Wabbit Saison which is a carrot beer, and my personal favorite - the Coffee Cream Ale which is a beer brewed with coffee - awesome! Some of the beers like the Coffee Cream Ale are seasonal, so unfortunately are not available all of the time. They also sell take-home growlers so you can take your favorite beer home too :) With a great atmosphere complete with beer vats right in the dining area, live music on Sunday's and friendly staff, it's easy to see why this place is very quickly becoming a favorite :)

Do not recommend…read more Pros Their food is of a reasonable price for what you get, sometimes. The child area is convenient for parents who wish to drink, gamble, etc. As the kids are kept in a staffed child zone and only require regular check ups. Additionally, at the restaurant tables they offer to provide kids with colouring books which are also educational. Cons Unfortunately, despite the reasonably priced food, the cooking capabilities vary, with some guests reporting over or under cooked food and others having an acceptable quality. Furthermore, the length of time to receive the food is quite drastic, with waits of up to an hour in this instance. The child area does not boast the features as described online (play stations, etc.), in addition it is certainly below pat in comparison to the high quality it used to be. The dress code is very strict, to the point of attempting to be a high end restaurant but clearly not attaining such a feat. The worst part is the fact that despite the club having live music, they have absolutely no regard as to the volume at which it is played, as being in a completely separate zone to the band, yelling was still required to converse with people at the same table which is completely unacceptable. Then upon requesting the staff to decrease the noise, they say they do not have control over the noise of the band.

We ordered as soon…read moreas we arrived and they weren't particularly busy but the food still took a while to arrive. Once it did though, we were surprised at the appearance of the food. I ordered a club sandwich that had the fillings falling out. The sandwich was enormous, a bit too big actually. The side serving of fries weren't also as hot as they could be. Overall, my meal was only decent. Nothing exciting. I also ordered an iced latte. It came out pretty quick but I'm not sure it was actually what I ordered. For one, it didn't have any iced and it wasn't even cold (but not boiling hot). There was also a ton of whipped cream on top. Really not what I was expecting but I guess it tasted okay. Now onto the real bad news. Two family members ordered meals: lasagne and steak. The lasagne came out completely cold whereas the steak looked very poor. It had an unsettling grey color and wasn't cooked as requested. The family members who ate it ended up being sick the entire day after. Overall, we were not happy with our meals and would not recommend nor go back there.

Anyway, this is another pub that I actually don't want to knock except that I feel I have no choice but to namely because the staff really seemed to be incredibly cold and blunt. Maybe it was just me at the time because the pub itself looked pretty nice, and the beer garden was really cool as well, however the staff really sort of did it in for me.

I've only come here for Thursday nights "jam night" because I've heard nothing but awful things…read moreabout what goes on here over weekends. The Metro is a really great, old building with most of character so it's too bad that nothing better has been put in to replace this nightclub with such a bad name for itself. I mean, jam night was OK. I went with a friend because we both know most of the guys and girls that play on this night. The small patio area where it's held is quaint. The crowd was small, but we knew most of them as well. I was very irritated when one of the bartenders ignored me not once, but twice, to serve his already drunk friends before me although I'd be waiting at the bar first. Not sure who the Metro thinks they are selling $8 something drinks but I think a reality check is needed. I'll never come here aside from coming to support friends for jam nights. I've even heard from many people that the taxi drivers will stray tourists away from Metro when they ask for a good place to go out.
